How do you transport kayaks in your truck?
Do you throw them in the back and hope they don’t fly out on the way home?
Or do you have a rack that you like?
In this video, I’m going to show you how I made a DIY kayak rack using a truck bed extender.
It helps keep my kayak safe and scratch-free, and it makes it really easy to load my kayak in and out of.
I’ll also show you how I strap my kayak down and what not to do when doing this.
Every time I go fishing I always drive 45 minutes to 2 hours on the highway, so this setup has been put to the test a lot and it's passed with flying colors (at least, I haven't lost my kayak yet!).
How do you transport your kayak?
Have any questions about this rack?
Let me know in the comments below!

Just bought my first Yak. Been watching hundreds of hours of vids, trying to see who, what, when, where, why, and how yakers are transporting Yaks. I bought a bed extender, was looking for mods. This is the winner! Man this is awesome! I was thinking of 2x4s, of a pipe, etc, this setup is perfect. Thx man. I also have Yakima roof rack system as a backup, in case of a failure. Older disabled Vet here, so low loading will definitely be more user friendly. Not to mention my fishing buddy who is telling I don't need to do this extra protection stuff, will see it, then want one. Lol! Awesome, most useful vid I've watched on this subject yet. Thank you.

Great video. I have a bed extender and have been looking to make bunks for the kayaks I transport. I love this idea. Gonna make one similar for two. Thanks!

I really like this set up. Ultimately, I’m looking for a trailer set up, but until I can get that figured out (including where to store it) this is at the very least a great interim solution.

You should always use two tie downs min and one for every 10’ of your cargo. If you made the bunks the same length as your kayak you could use it to hang it up for the non used storage time as well . I like the design.

Hi Tony will that bed extender fit any tow bar insert?

Nice! Are the bunks necessary if you have a full size bed? Would the bed extender be enough?

Not really DIY if you're starting with a $250 bed extender product, but I like the idea of this.

And Hobie recommends you simply lay it flat, without tunnel supports.

But you still have to spend several more minutes ON THE RAMP installing your batteries, gear, cooler, pedal drive, graph, and anything else. And with a PA14, its a beast to pick the nose OR stern up off the extender empty.

Thanks for the great video! Can you please tell me what diameter pool noodles used? And, did you just slit the noodles on one side length-wise, or actually cut them fully in half lengthwise? I've got 2 @ 22" wide sea kayaks to transport in a full sized f150 bed, with bed extender,, and will be trying to construct an integrated 2 bunk unit, using your pvc design. Will be trying to construct in a way that the pvc unit is snug fitting, stabilized between the wheel wells (48"). Thanks for any info and/or suggestions!

How is the pvc system attached to the truck bed? Or does it just rest on top freely ?
@ChrisJones-fm6wp
@ChrisJones-fm6wp Год назад
Judging by the movement that was shown, it’s just resting freely. It gets tensioned when you strap the kayak down.

Why did you build the bunks vs. just using the bed of the truck? I have a t-bone and it lines right up to my bed height to be a nice flat surface.
@bennettles9230
@bennettles9230 4 года назад
Same here. I’ve got a long bed Tacoma and just have a rubber bed liner as well as the T- bone for the Outback to rest flat on. Good idea but I just didn’t see the need unless I’m missing something. Thanks for the vid though.

I don't think you can avoid scratches on the bottom of your kayak if you are fishing, so I don't have a need for protection in the truck bed. (Tacoma long bed, with built-in liner.)

You dont say how its fastned to the truck bed
@ChrisJones-fm6wp
@ChrisJones-fm6wp Год назад
It’s not. Even though he doesn’t say it, you can tell by the movement. It doesn’t need to be attached to the bed since it get tensioned by the weight of the kayak and the cam strap.

it is obviois that it's attached to the tbar and just resting on the truck bed

All I really use is 1 strap..... Simplicity says this is efficient... Common sense says you're buying time for that disaster moment.

Ratchet strap = too tight or not tight enough. I cringe every time I see someone use them.
