I’m researching painting my cabinets, I’m so glad I found your channel. You are straight forward and very knowledgeable. I will be using the Benjamin Moore paint you recommended in another video. My son in law has a Wagner spray gun that we will be using. I plan on priming them with the primer you suggested also. Just gotta wait for the weather to warm up here in Michigan. Thanks for the encouragement
Thanks, great presentation and explanations. Was hoping I could get away with using paint with primer, but appears I'ma have to do the labor of prime then top coat. Also thanks for mix ratios on wood grain filler and paint thinning
😊😊 I’m new so getting my list together buying things that you recommended. Going with the light white top cabinets paintings all the interiors also white . Lowers in light gray just coping the colors at the big box stores. Look for that Benjamin Moore paint that you recommend getting the Wagner sprayer that you recommend. Going to use hinges and handles over , so going to use can paint for those. Got to go watch more of your videos now. 😊
Thanks Ryan, very happy that I stumbled across this video. As a 'hobby handyman' I have shied away from full kitchen cabinet painting, also found spraying too intimidating. I have decided to push myself and step up to an airless sprayer, starting with bathroom cabinets that were previously painted badly by the homeowner. Figured I can only improve on their condition and a softer intro before taking on anything big in a kitchen.
I love your videos and I love seeing the end results after all of the meticulous work you do to prep. We bought an old house with kitchen cabinets that have multiple coats of paint applied over time. There’s literally so many layers that they no longer close correctly. They are a bright green color, lol, so they have to be painted.Would you strip them down to start fresh and if so, what do you use to strip the paint?
Stripping is a ton of work, so it's hard to say without seeing them. If I were to strip the cabinets, I would use CitriStrip. CitriStrip is Non-Toxic and Low Odor, works through multiple layers, safe on the wood, and it's cheap. I would also invest in an electric sander and a lot of good sand paper. Personally, I love the SurfPrep sander (it's what I use). The Surfprep has reduced vibration and will help you cut through all the left over paint and get your cabinets amazingly smooth for some fresh paint. surfprepsanding.com/product/3x4-electric-ray-sanders/?aff=210
@@diypainting I’ve used Citristrip before and it’s a good product. I already have a Surfprep so it’ll get a workout with these old cabinets. Keep making videos, they’re very educational and helpful to us DIYers. Thanks for your reply!
Love your work ! I’m going to be doing my cabinets in the next few weeks. Just got my Flexio 5000 today. I did have some people tell me to use a lacquer instead of the Ben Moore Advance paint that you use. What are your thoughts on that instead ? Thanks for all the help and tips and great videos !!
How would recommend handling small areas where there is peeling paper veneer? Would I just cut it back with a razor to the point where it is still bonded well, and then prime and paint? Most of my cabinets are all wood, but a couple of end sides have the paper veneer with spots where it is lifting off. Love your videos!
Love your videos! First timer here! I am in the process of redoing our oak kitchen cabinets. I'm planning to fill the grain as you suggest and sand between primer and top coat. My question is, how long after applying primer (via Flexio 5000) do you have to wait before sanding? I don't want to rush the job, but I'm hoping I won't have to wait 24 hours either. Now, back to learning all that I can from your videos! Thank you!!!
Dry time depends on the environment, but most water based primers are dry within an hour and can be sanded within 2 from what I've found. Lower humidity in the environment helps.
Hello. I have watched almost all your videos (start to finish) so I can tackle my kitchen. Great job and you make it easy with all the instructions and tips. However, I am looking for the best help on the drawers. I don't want to use brushes or rollers. Can you make a video on how you handle the drawers? Do you recommend taking the drawer out and spray the whole thing or just doing the front and back side? If only the front and back side do I take them out and use plastic on it or what is your recommendation? In your videos you have kept the drawers in place but I haven't seen how you spray the inside part. I only seen a video where you brushed it.
I’m planning to repaint my kitchen cabinets and eventually other stuff in my house like doors and maybe my garage. Would you recommend something like the Wagner control 130 over the flexio 5000?
Great video. I watched the whole thing. I would like to convert my kitchen cabinets to sliding barn doors. I have not seen kitchen sliding barn doors anywhere else. Can you give any advice? How do I paint the cabinets so they don't "scream 'Yes I was painted'" as someone else said.
As far as converting to sliding barn doors, sorry, i have no idea. But painting, check out some of my tutorial videos, i explain exactly how to get a perfectly smooth finish when painting cabinets.
Great video! I've seen you mention it in the comments, but in what scenarios would you pick Behr versus BM Advance? I'm considering BM because it's highly rated, but don't want to if Behr is just as good. Thanks in advance.
THANKS great video. Do you add 20% water to all your recommended Primers, INSL-X Stix & Sherwin Williams Extreme Block Primer? ALSO Are you adjusting the nozzle position when you change from side to side and up and down direction with the sprayer?
Yes I thin most everything down by roughly 20%. I do a little more and a little less depending on products, but 20% is pretty standard. Yes, I adjust the nozzle when switching from horizontal to vertical spraying. A quarter twist turns the fan to a horizontal or vertical spray pattern.
Great video and great tips as always! Question, so I use BEHR PREMIUM Satin Enamel Interior/Exterior Cabinet, Door & Trim Paint when refinishing furniture. Would you suggest the same thinning with that paint, 20%?
If the factory finish is holding up well and you're repainting to brighten or change color, then no, you do not need to prime. If the finish is failing, chipping or having other issues, then priming is good idea. Previously painted cabinets typically don't need to be primed, they can be sanded and straight to top coat.
I use the same 3M sanding sponges on those as well. Here are the sponges I use: Medium Grit: amzn.to/3ve4GKO Fine: amzn.to/3NCtUch Extra Fine: amzn.to/486Yy5I
Any tips on how to estimate how much paint you'll need to spray cabinets? I built all new doors I'm going to use Advance from BM and it's so expensive I want to make sure not to overbuy.
For reference, this kitchen took me 1 gallon of primer and I believe two gallons of top coat (gallon per coat) with just enough left over to leave the home owner some touch up paint. I figure out the square footage of the cabinet surfaces to be painted (including backs of doors) and aim the 250-300 square feet per gallon range.
Mainly because the owner picked out Behr colors, liked Behr paint, and Home Depot was 2 minutes from the house. I am not loyal to one brand of paint, I've used Behr, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin and others and am happy with all of them in different situations.
anything that can be done with white foiled coated cabinets? face frame is wood but doors have that finish and is peeling near stove also has arch routered in door.
Too bad the homeowner didn’t want to remove that scalloped panel. It screams “YES I WAS PAINTED!” I love your work. I’m getting ready to paint a friend’s kitchen since I did such a good job on her bath cabinets. She wants to pay me but I don’t know what to charge for labor. Her kitchen is about the same size as this one. Any suggestions? I could really use the help in determining a charge.
What area (geographic) do you work. I'm outside of LA and desperately want our kitchen and my bath cabinets done. (Also counter in my bath. It's PINK! And I hate it!
Great question. I am actually working on some videos using only a brush & roller to show that you can get a great finish with a brush and roller as well. That being said, it is actually quite a bit faster to mask everything off and spray. Brushing is slow. And if you aren't experienced with a brush, it can leave some really rough looking brush strokes. Spraying does give a smoother finish as well.
@@diypaintingunderstood. I’ve got a Wagner and just about every painting project I debate whether not to use it or not due to the masking and clean up. I’d definitely want to spray the doors and drawer faces, out in the garage. But trying contain the paint dust in the house is a lot of extra work they brushing/rolling would seem to avoid. Great video regardless. I enjoy watching you work.
They look excellent and he transformed the kitchen. This is a relatively inexpensive alternative that often makes more sense than over-improving. Inexpensive is a more polite word than cheap.
If you watched the video, she bought new hinges but got the wrong size. She was also hosting a Christmas party the next day, so we needed to improvise a quick solution that would last for a couple days. As a favor, I painted her hinges for her so they would look nice enough for her party. My guess is she then returned her hinges, bought new ones and replaced everything after that.
I’ve watched so many of your diy videos and reviews… this was a great tutorial!!! Planning on using your combo you did on your own kitchen where your son broke the door :) ….. one question for now… since I’m doing black on my white oak the BW store rep suggested inslyx aqua lock tinted black instead of zinnser smart prime that I remember you suggesting… I haven’t see anyone recommend the aqua lock.. any thoughts ?
Awesome ! Thanks for validating what the rep suggested … nervous about the drywall method but this video was very detailed on that part compared to the old one.. truly thankful for this video !
