Roiling pins from the second hand store will work as long rollers, too. They are usually a nice hard wood (or acrylic) with a centered axel bore already to go.

That's excellent Robert! But you might want to make an insulated cabinet for it to dampen the sound of metal parts rolling in the drum. I'd make one just to reduce the motor noise. There are certain sounds I can't stand.

@@AEON. I got all my bits together conveyor rollers, The motor is off a fitness machine that vibrates found it dumped in the woods 220 v dc , as i want to run it for long periods I got racing cart tyres for barrels. i do have a dc speed controller. Just starting to get in to lapidary and jewellery making.I have watched so many of your videos I find them so interesting. Its starting to be so helpful now, A big thing in jewelry on youtube is eletroforming.All the conductive coatings you have done will come in to play too. Thank you all so much. What's your views on using chemicals for rust removal ie. Acids. Could you do a comparison between cosmetically available rust removal chemicals and perhaps your own recipe. And compared to say sand blasting or tumbling etc.

Someone recommended citric acid to me for rust removal.. 🤔 I use the food grade stuff to descale the kettle so I dunno about rust but it's pretty cheap powder from eBay. Basically it's lemon juice extract, sour! But safe. 😅👍

Another good build! May have to have so,e ridges from scrap inside to catch the parts and flip them. No biggie for you though! Question, Did your camera lens get scratched? There is always a blur in the same spot. Inquiring minds want to know lol.

nice one. If you made one of the roller shafts longer you could chuck the drill directly onto the shaft and saved the drill. Also if you inclinded the whole mechanism you dont need stops on the other side. Cool idea though. Thank you for sharing...from South AFRICA

Dear Rob, ages ago I seen a similar mashine like this. Was in a factory and much bigger. And: It made a HELL of noise! I'm afraid you will not long happy with the plastic body of drum ... Too soft. But I might be wrong. Good luck with it, a great idea anyway!

I wash ammunition brass in plastic buckets that are the same material. There’s some wear but they’ll probably hold up for a hundred hours or so. At that point I can just get a new bucket

HI Rob. Have feeling you might need some longitudinal vanes inside to "stir". Am wondering if the weight of the parts and gravel are just going to slide as a single mass in the low point with the reduced friction added by cleaninv solution. But looks increbibly promising nonetheless.
@kiddiescripterkiller
@kiddiescripterkiller 3 года назад
It depends on the rpm of the barrel... I can't remember where I read about it, but once you reach a certain speed it will cause the items inside to start "folding" over on to itself, then as you increase the speed it will cause it to "stick" to the out side of the barrel. I'm designing a new style gold processing plant and used that article to figure out the speed of the trommel so I wouldn't need the vanes on the inside of the trommel. Slow, you get "slumping" motion (like what you described... just slides along the bottom) Medium, you get "cataract" motion (will fold over onto itself) Fast, you get "centrifuging" (sticks to the side)

Rob mentioned a couple of video's ago, there is either a smudge on your lens or the light is glaring onto the lens, whatever it is, it is creating a blur on you video's, have you noticed? Ok the blur disappeared at 2.55, nice vid as usual

So the only concern I have would be that the drill motor overheat when the tumbler is used for any practical amount of time, that is the problem I ran into when I built a fairly simular rig that was powered by a windshield wiper motor that I coupled to a 3D printed gearbox... It works, but the motor will kill it self if you leave it too long spinning a loaded drum...

Well I hope this works, but I'm concerned that all those steel parts and gravel rattling around are going to "clean" all the plastic out of the plastic drum... I do like the ad hoc use of common bits and pieces to make something interesting!

Don't need the rollers, just 2 sets of casters, 1 set for each end. As the friction drive is just another modified caster modify one of the support ones and drive it instead. If you mount them perpendicular to the curved barrel body using angled supports you may not even need the end stops though they may still be a good idea.

Blood hell, I just threw that roller in the bin. I only have one of them. For more torque you can use a windscreen washer motor too. They use them on trummels machines on gold washing machines.

Love the great ideas and can-do practical demonstrations. I built a tumbler out of a plastic 55 gallon barrel... Cut out about 3" inside the thick rim, and mounted it at about a 30 degree angle to be able to leave it open. Bolted small (~1.5") stirring fins at an angle to circulate the media and parts. A small motor with a belt that went all the way around the barrel for speed reduction, castors on the low end where you used a wood block. Lots of downsides to my build... But it worked for several years with occasional repairs and upgrades. Leaving it open meant it would be very dusty if running dry, pretty noisy, needed a little babysitting to fix and upgrade the things that went wrong, like the belt walking off, the belt slipping when I chucked in a heavy rusty chain... The upsides were even bigger though. If I hadn't built it, I wouldn't have had a big tumbler for those several years. I wouldn't have learned a bunch of little tiny things that all added up to more and better projects. I'm always stumped by the folks who say things like "It's not as good as store-bought... New is not that expensive, just buy one..." I *LOVE* comments that give suggestions to improve a presented idea. Sometimes the comment isn't phrased so nice, but constructive ideas are a super benefit to having thousands of people watch and comment. I wish that there was an easy way to sort the chaff from the wheat, as you said in a previous video. Again, love the great variety of good ideas and repurposing in your video list Rob. Thank you!

you will need to put something in there that will positively engage whatever you wish to tumble as otherwise it will sit in the bottom and slide without tumbling and that will defeat the porpose .

It could be all casters. Oh, and once the barrel is loaded, there won't be any drag from the weight of the lid. :)

odds on in a loaded state I doubt your barrel would tip eliminating the need for the casters.

Hi Robert, I've just finished watching a TED talk that I think may be of interest to you. It's about 'the 4th phase of water' and how it can hold electrical charge from light. Very interesting concept that I think you may be able to apply to some of your battery research. The same concept could possibly also be applied to other electrolytes. You may well already be aware, sorry if we are sucking eggs here... anyway as soon as I finished watching the talk I thought of you. Strangely, YT will not let me share the link which make me even more intrigued. Search for 'The fourth phase of water' here on YT.

I used some dewalt glass polish pads of various grades to get a scratch out of a car windscreen, excellent results! Not sure if they make camera lense sized? Tumbler could also double up as a competition tombola! I wonder if there's a barrel that could fit in a tumble dryer?;)

Pretty cool, possibly a more efficient way would be mounting the motor underneath with a rubber belt going over the drum that is locked in with a lever action handle and spring that also holds the motor. (If I explained that any good)
@kiddiescripterkiller
@kiddiescripterkiller 3 года назад
Very cool... So many ways you can do it... I have some of that stuff laying around... I think I'll make one using plywood rings around the barrel so I can leave the handles on. Rubber on the drive rollers and 2 casters at an angle in the center of the drive rollers against the sloped sides of the barrel, to keep it centered and non tipping... And then sell my parts washer... ;)

🙂i used s rock tumbler for small stuff for years. you have the beginnings of a washing machine. insistently i used to have and old laundry dryer and a sealable container and some old moving blankets ( yes liquid solution did leak some times), good it was not used for my clothing, lol

Anxious to see if this is as effective as the vibration method. From a design standpoint, I like this option better. Not only because it's easier to make and to obtain parts, but it's also lighter, stows away easier, and doesn't shake everything to pieces. 😋 My guess is that it will work well but simply take a long time to run.

Incredible. I been searching for an old washer motor. I have it somewhere and was going to put the old drive belt from an old dryer around it. I like this much better. I don't need high speed for my purposes. I am inspired every time I watch your channel.
