DIY LED Corner Lamp For Under $50 / No Tools

This cheap, DIY minimalist LED corner lamp/LED fixture is an incredibly easy build as it requires no tools at all. The LED strip lights are sticky on one side, I'm just peeling the back off and sticking it to the PVC. All the PVC and spray paint was purchased at The Home Depot. We bought a 10ft, 1in diameter PVC pipe for $3.24 and had them cut it down to a 5ft piece and two 20in pieces (make sure the store carries the 3 way elbow and caps that fit the size pipe you want before you have them cut it). It could be taller and it could have longer legs, these were the measurements we wanted and liked. To close off the ends of the pipes we purchased 3 end caps for $0.83 a piece and one three way connector/elbow for $2.57 . A can of black spray paint for $6 and LED strip lights for about $27. Just connect all the PVC pieces, paint it and stick the LED lights on it and you're done. The most time consuming part of this project is waiting for the paint to dry. Now we have a fancy LED corner lamp that we paid less than $50 for and we love it!
Shopping online? It may be more expensive but here are some links that could help. These PVC Links are for 3/4 inch pipe so they will be smaller than what I used but they will also be cheaper.

There is no special trick to putting the lights on. They have a sticky backing. I'm just peeling the back off the strip and sticking it to the PVC where I want it. That's it, no tools, no zip ties, it's just stuck to the pipe like tape. When I got to the top of the lamp I just made a 180° turn and went back down. I only cut the strip once at the end. There is a link in the description to a video that may answer some questions about the LED's and how they are attached.

3 things I would have done differently... 1 - I would have filled the tubes with sand, better rigidity. PVC pipes can start to curve after a while. 2 - Used PVC glue to connect the pipes at the joints. 3 - used 3m auto trim tape to hold the LED strips to the plastic. I have worked with those strips, and the glue that holds them on can get pretty weak under heat. and yes those strips do throw off a little heat. ESPECIALLY when stuck to painted surfaces. Either that or roughened up the inside surfaces where the tape sticks with a little 220 grit sandpaper.

I was trying to make the easiest, cheapest lamp possible that still looked cool. I think I accomplished that. That stuff you would have done costs more money and time and I personally believe it's overkill and unnecessary. The pipes fit together tightly and the lamp literally sits in the corner untouched. It doesn't need glued. I have shoe racks made from PVC with shoes that have been sitting on them for years and the pipes haven't bent yet. If the 3m strip that is on these lights starts to fail I will use glue to fix it but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
@cjmmjc2131
@cjmmjc2131 3 года назад
Well I'm sure your shoe racks aren't 5 feet long with nothing in the middle. And its great that yours dont but they wont start bending until they do start bending As for overkill with glue, i have seen people doing how you did it. And when the picked to up to move the legs fell out and tore the strips. But hey u do u

Looks like a great way to grow a marriage! Like that you guys did this together! Here's the issue I'm having. I own 8 of the authentic versions that are over 100 bucks or whatever each. They have various flow up and down and do like 70 different combos of lights. Feels like the 4th of July. We're talking multiple colors on each area of the pillar. If it's worth the extra $50 for the real thing then get it however the remotes to mine absolutely blow! What you set up has a much nicer remote! I do like your idea and I'm really glad that you did it because I want to pursue and do it because you now can get the strips you talked about for 13 bucks in the PVC pipe is probably around the same as what you quoted! It'll be good for the garage and other areas!

Very cool. I've been thinking about how Id like to approach something like this. I had an idea of maybe using clear pipe and spray painting just the front of it so I can put the LED's on the inside and let them shine out the back. Maybe fill the pipes with some kind of clear resin to keep everything in place.

So making it into a duo controlled lamp set worked. Just spent an extra $10 on a linking kit, used 2 click tight strip connectors, two male/male junctions and a 6ft extension. Worked great. Thanks again for the great tutorial. The only confusing part was the corners where you made 90°'s, I noticed yours were a bit loose and would have been nice to see a close up of yours to compare. I folded the strip fairly sharply and they held up.

Pretty cool. What about lighting on inward side? Would that illuminate the whole room vs corner only?
@TheInexperiencedAdventures
@TheInexperiencedAdventures 3 года назад
If you put the lights facing inward, toward the room, you would need a way to diffuse the light, like a semi transparent plastic or something. Something to act similar to a lamp shade. Each light would be very bright and uncomfortable to look at if you don't have that. Having it face the wall diffuses the light and still lights up the room in the dark. It's all preference I suppose. I like the diffused soft light that having it face the wall creates. It's very nice ambient lighting. We use it as a night light for our kitchen, dinning room and living room every night.

Wood is so porous that the glue may not hold long term, but if you put something on it like a polyurethane coating or a paint it should stick better. If the wood is thin, you may be able to put a curve in it, but that is beyond my skill level.

@TheInexperiencedAdventures
@TheInexperiencedAdventures 3 года назад
We've used this every night since we made it. It stays on for 10-12 hours every night and we haven't had any issues and haven't noticed much heat coming from them. Pvc starts to melt around 176° Fahrenheit. In a typical room around 75° Fahrenheit an led strip can get up to 129° Fahrenheit. I don't think there will be any issues. Although rare, an led strip that is malfunctioning can exceed safe temperatures. I'm no professional but this is what I found from some research. Hope it helps.

Where do you cut it exactly? I don't understand where and why you cut that that spot. What connections are you using to keep he lamp working after you cut it? I bought one from Walmart and I'm pissed lol.

I didn't need to use any new connections with mine. It already had the plug connection at one end (the end nearest the outlet in the video). The strip should have cut lines to indicate where to cut. If you cut on those lines at the end of the strip all the lights will work. If you want to use the leftover strip of lights not being used for the lamp then you will need to buy some connectors and a new wall plug. If you go back in the video to where I cut the strip at the end of the lamp you will see there is a cut line in between some small copper strips. Hope this helps.

@@TheInexperiencedAdventures maybe I'm buying a different brand. What type are you buying? Maybe I can go on Amazon and find it.

You have to cut at every 3rd led, they usually have the strip marked where to make the cut
