just a quick tip, when doing your sound clips, instead of turning off the music, just make it quieter, that way it doesn't just seem like dead space. also, in between audio clips, you can hear you press the space bar or whatever you're clicking to stop recording. i would recommend recording each of the clips a few seconds longer that way it's easier to cut that sound. this isn't meant to be criticism, just some tips.

@@ChrisMaherDIY Before each recording session, I record a ten to 15 second clip of "silence." Just me sitting there quietly. Then I use that recording to fill in the dead space between my clips so it sounds like one uninterrupted clip. It is different for every room/location I shoot in.

Super awesome video! A thing you should try is this...run the strip and at the end, fold it and then ran the strip back down again, and then cut it( so it would appear as having two strips laid out in parallel but its just 1 strip) looks like you had plenty of left over to do this. This would have increased the brightness and increase the saturation of overall color.

One of the best tips I can offer when mounting LED strips is to put down a layer of aluminum foil tape before setting the strips down. It will make the leds stay cooler and have less to no chance of dead pixels. I learned this the hard way by having leds burn through the coating of several of my 1st DIY fixtures.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 3 года назад
Thank you for the advice! I've never heard that but makes total sense. Much easier doing that upfront versus having to deal with a dead pixel later. Appreciate it!!
@TejasAutoSalonJasonW
@TejasAutoSalonJasonW 3 года назад
It definitely helps with the "water proof" led strips that have the silicone coating on them. I learned the hard way when using the 12V 5amp power to make my white DIY shop lights brighter. After a month or so, the coating was literally turning black right over each LED. I made a desk lamp with strips recessed in an oak plank covered with a diffuser plate from an office overhead using the foil as a "maybe this will work" and haven't had a single dead pixel yet. That was 3 years ago. Nice video by the way. I wonder if there's a way to get the stencil paper like yours in a bigger sheet.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 3 года назад
@@TejasAutoSalonJasonW do you think the non silicone ones will be ok since there is place for the heat to go? Thanks! Fun hobby working with LEDs and making little projects but still learning a lot about how to best power them.
@TejasAutoSalonJasonW
@TejasAutoSalonJasonW 3 года назад
As long as there is air flowing over them. Like the big diffuser you made should be OK. Plus with RGB leds, unless you're using one solid color at high brightness for long periods it should be good.
@ge2719
@ge2719 Год назад

Turned out real nice. Good work. Word of advice about the router table though, you really don't want to hog away that much material at those depths in a single pass. 1/8"-1/4" at a time doing multiple passes. Those bits can't handle the stress of that much wood being taking away. Just looking out for your safety.

When you make a channel like that, you need to reverse the ends of the wood and run it through from the opposite end to make a perfect center channel. Cut your slots for the Diffuser paper at an angle more close to the angle the Diffuser Paper Arcs over to the other channel for a more secure fit and to hand upside down. Cool Project!

I tried Dozens of different ways to diffuse LED's. Your way looked super clean. The only modifications I did was 1) taped diffuser paper together (stays hidden in slot). 2) used reflective muffler tape instead of white paint. 3) Instead of wood ends, I cut out foam so the light can bleed out on top and bottom. 3) I used small black coffee straws and wedged them in the slot end to end, gives it a nice bordered clean look. 4)I removed the original wiring from LED's (tri-color) and bought black 3 in 1 wire, looks clean. Couldn't be happier with results.

Found your video because i want to build a Stand for my vertical mounted graphics card and wanted to include LED Strips in a way you can‘t see the single dots of the LED‘s. I think your second method will be the best for my project because i need a flat surface at the front. Only things i will change is that the stand will be out of acrylic with a black foil attached to each sind instead if the front, there i will so the same you did or i just glue the sheet to the front with some transparent glue because i don‘t have such maschines to do the cut so i could simply slide them in. Also i want it flat with the front and not like on yours that the side pieces are a bit longer. Maybe i will give an update as soon as i‘m finished my project if you or other users are interested in it because i think there are other people out there trying to do the same thing because there are no stands available for many pc cases and if you have a heavy graphics card like RTX 3090 you definitely need a stand when mounting it vertically :)

Keep up the good work! Your videos are very inspirational. Using the stencil paper as a diffuser is pure genius. The link to the stencil paper is dead. It will probably have a different name in my country, so which paper did you use exactly? Hopefully i can translate it to something my local shop understands. I'm always looking for new ways to diffuse leds. Beside the cheap led profiles from aliexpress, I found you can also use PVC pipe & those gulfy pipes you use for the dishwasher also give a cool lighting effect!

I can buy a lot of Nanoleafs with all the equipment you used to build your DYI LED strip diffuser....
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 3 года назад
lol very true! If you don't have the equipment or access to equipment my recommendation would be just to use a circular saw (i think some stores have them for 30 dollars). The first idea in the video would be super easy to do with just a circular saw and the second idea you could do the same thing but use 3 pieces of wood instead of one and again use the circular saw to make the groove.

I think people forget that there’s a difference between DIY and life hack. Of course you’ll need the tools and equipment to do something DIY. DIY won’t ever be as easy as just buying it already made lol The idea is that if you purchase the tools and make that investment then you can build even more DIY projects.

If you're thinking of doing a led project and you want to extend the life of your LEDs, I highly recommend putting your LEDs in or on aluminium profile for the best cooling and fire rating. I'm basically saying if you stick your LEDs to wood or plastic, you increase your chances of setting your house on fire. only unexperienced people do this👍.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks so much for watching and I agree Aluminum profiles would be the best option! Luckily I have yet to have any issues with led's not working or getting hot. I'm always surprised at how cool to the touch the leds are even after being on for a while!

@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 3 года назад
Thanks!! Corner floor lamp if you have the LEDs facing the wall would be pretty simple. It could be as easy as putting some LEDs on a 1 x 2 inch board with a very shallow groove cut out to put the LEDs in. Then maybe just build some legs that sit on the floor at a 45° angle. I might have to attempt making something now that I'm thinking more about it! Thanks for getting my wheels turning lol.

Hi, do you think the hobby lobby paper will work inside of the smaller aluminum channels to help with diffusion? Mainly concerned about heat of the leds close to the paper. Thanks!
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Год назад
It will certainly help! However if the diffuser is really shallow, there might not be anything you can do to get rid of hotspots. Doesn't hurt to try! I wouldn't be too worried about the heat. In my experience the leds dont really get that hot.
