DIY Linear Servo Actuator 3D Printed with full Positional Control and long travel
-Slim Profile, no large parts
-smaller driving gear improves Torque
-uses a modified SG90 180 degree Servo Motor
-external position feedback using potentiometer taken out of the SG90 servo
-works with standard Arduino Servo example code
-printed in PLA 0.3mm Layer
-also works with servo testers

I have been tinkering with gear ratios for 120 degree servo actuation; however, your design exceeds this, is much smaller, and is more relevant to my needs. Well done. I will be downloading your design from Thingiverse and will add your name as author of the design and file owner when posting in other forums. Again, thank you. Best to you and yours, Steve

Glad you liked it! Regarding the gear designs, the Fusion 360 has inbuilt gear designing scripts/plugins which make it more easier to design gears for all purposes, you can find some videos online, or if it feels to intimidating, let me know, I might make a tutorial later on for gear designing using this project as an example. Please Subscribe and share, thank you.

Anyone here have any success on making this linear actuator work? My servo is different from the one that he use here. I’ve checked 2 different servo. Still not the same like in the video. Appreciate if someone could share the video on how to assemble the potentiometer on this design.

@@beardoguy nice... We can cut the wires of inside pot.. and put any resistance value pot outside (resistance value doesn't matter because all the IC reads is the voltage from VCC to GND) so any pot should work...

Yes it can be increased to 90mm by increasing the gear teeth on the rack driving gear

@beardoguy

Yes it would be possible with a DC motor too but a microcontroller will have to control the DC motor using a motor driver and control its position based on the feedback from the potentiometer

I'm running into the same issue. @The Beardo Guy (amazing hack / thanks for sharing the 3d models btw!) could you please show how you reassembled the cogs inside after you've taken out the potentiometer? At 12:43 it's clear there are 2 rods, one of which seems to be the potentiometer's, so the cogs that relied on it need some replacement at least on my model. Also the axle of your potentiometer sticking out of its cog (as briefly glimpsed at 1:28) seems wider than that of my servo. @AZHAGU05 it makes for an expensive potentiometer to take it from another servo, but that's my current workaround, I'm glad you suggested that! I've gutted most of the potentiometer's insides / only preserved its plastic base and metallic rod (the lack of wiper creates an extra 1mm+ gap, which I might try and plug with a washer below the plastic base, unless I 3d print some alternative, thicker plastic base). This allows the "former potentiometer" to rotate 360. Alternatively, for a cheaper result, one could use another potentiometer of the same resistance and modify the 3d-printed cog accordingly

Have you considered leaving the existing potentiometer in the servo and just reconnecting the wires to a different potentiometer? If so, you could make the design work for any manufacturer of servo (by picking a well known replacement potentiometer) and construction would be easier because you'd only have to reroute the wires and not remove the potentiometer. Sorry, you got me brainstorming =)
@beardoguy
@beardoguy 3 года назад
That will work just fine, the only reason that I got the internal one out is I couldn't find any good quality potentiometer in my local stores. Thanks.
