DIY Maypole Braider - How does it work?

First test of my "maypole braider" with an improvised bobbin. It is not yet adjusted right, nor does it show the final design of the bobbin, but you can get a good impression of how the mecanism works and how the bobbin is guided on its path.
The machine will be used to fabricate cloth braided wiring harnesses.

Ahh this was the key I was missing on how these work. the football shaped boat makes it travel to the other gear.

I remember them advertising a toy like this on Nickelodeon or something when I was a kid that was supposed to braid girls hair and make bracelets and stuff. I remember watching it and being insanely curious how it worked. Completely forgot about it until the algorithm just put this video in my recommendeds, so thanks for answering this question I'd forgot I asked :)

Hey Andreas , thank you for your beneficial explanation and design. I am curious it seem that you used bush in gears. Why you wouldn't choose bearing in side of gears ? Any specific reason for that ? (by the way, I didnt see any bearing in gears on professional machines as well , even bushes too , those are self alignment.)

Hi Okan, the gears do have bearings but due to the design they can't be seen once assembled.

Very nice job with the machine. Have you used of the shelf gears for this or machined new ones? What is the OD on the gears?

Yes, they were a bargain wholesale and so I simply chose these. I'd have to measure, but I guess it was around 7cm.

What is driving your gears here? Are the 8 smaller gears driven by a larger gear to the side and then a hand crank is used? Also did you machine those notches in the gears for the pins to ride in? Thanks.

The gears are engaging each other and one of them is drivem by a 9th gear connected to a powerfull motor, taken from a welding machine wire feed. The notches are milled and you have to be careful to set these up right, so it's always a tooth and a gap meeting. This of course is easier with an even number of teeth on the gears.

So just to check that I understood it, each of the boats/bobbins can only move in one specific way around the maypole, which is chosen when inserting the bobbin bei turning the nose of the boat left or right?

Exactly! One goes left, the next goes right and so on. Once they're on their designated path, they can not escape it. The feed slot is also closed after the machine is set up with a fitting piece of steel to prevent any error.

Hi Haydn, there's really no drawings, just some very confusing (to others) sketches that would be of no use to you, as these refer to the exact parts I used and I used those as they were available. You really just need to have an equal number of discs with recesses to take the slides and drive them with gears, belts or even chains. Almost no limitations here. The hardest thing would probably be machining of the slots in the top plate. You can see quite a bit of how I designed my version and there's really no great secret to it. Maybe I'll make a video with pictures of the building process and some comments?!

Can you please show how a 4 trand braider such as this would be made? I would recreate this but it seems a bit complex to start with and I want to braid around really thin wires (earphone cables) to reinforce it. That would be much appreciated.

I guess this would work pretty much the same way as this one. Problem could be the little space left between the wheels. All in all it's just two bobbins going clockwise an two going anti clockwise crossing their paths. in Prinzipal any even number of bobbins will work, but I would at least use six wheels and bobbins to clear the middle.

This is so cool! When you say "Wiring harnesses" do you mean for cable pulls? I've done contracting in low voltage areas, and I've always wanted a way to bundle cables and I thought this would be very helpful, is that what you do?

It's main purpose is to provide a hose-like braiding around wiring harnesses for vehicles, i.e. motorcycles. How this wpuld help in contracting, I don't know.

Ah, I see. Well, when you're running a lot of ethernet cables, there's only so much pipe. if you can get the cables bound together and in one piece, everything is neater, faster, and looks better, I think it would help a lot.

and would be a fairy simple matter to drop in another pair of bobbins, evenly spaced around, any number up to the available number of slots could be used.

Why? There's nothing much to see there. It's really just two turned pieces in which the inner ring of the sprocket's bearing is clamped between, and the "cover", or guide on top. On this bearing the sprocket turns freely and the whole assembly is nothing more than an axle. All eight are located in a way they engage each other in a cricle and a nineth sprocket is connectet to the motor that drives all of them.

The gears are standard hardware that you can get from most shops that specialise in engineering parts, like bearings, chains, belts etc. and the recesses are machined/milled. You'd also have to turn the seats for the bearings on a lathe.
