DIY Men's Shirt Refashion into a bomber jacket. Day 191 of 365 Sewing Makes Challenge by Murrmade Designs.
Story of This Garment
Refashioning Men's shirts is a lot harder than it looks on some RU-vid Channels. I saw one for Bomber Jackets and thought I would give it a try.
Fabric and Pattern
Men's shirts, especially dress shirts are pretty flimsy cotton once you take off the collar and cuffs. To do a bomber jacket, you need a little more substantial cotton. This one was a bit thicker so I thought it would be a good choice. You could also use a denim or kaki shirt. I used the side pocket pattern piece from Newlook 6561.
Construction
1. I would usually pick off the chest pocket, but it had a very strong bartack on it so I thought i would leave it because i didn't want a hole in my jacket.
2. I cut off the collar.
3. I cut off the cuffs at the top of the sleeve placket. I wish I would have left one more inch and just sewed up the placket.
4. I measured my zipper on the shirt, subtracted 3 inches for the bottom band and lopped off the bottom.
5. I tried on the shirt and pinned how much to take in the sleeves, the underarm and the sides. I sewed the sleeves and trimmed the sides.
6. While I had the sides open, I cut four pocket pieces out of the bit I had chopped off the bottom. To put in inseam pockets, you sew the pocket pieces to the sides, right sides together, then you sew the side seam, going around the pocket as well. Sew down and up the seam seam allowance on the top and bottom of the pocket until you have an opening the size you want. Turn the pockets in and top stitch them in place.
7. I put the ribbed cuffs on the sleeves. I wanted 3 inch cuffs so I cut two pieces 6.5 inches by the width of my wrist. Sewed the long side together right sides together. Folded it over so the raw edges are together, pulled it on the sleeve so the raw edge of the cuff and sleeve are together and sewed it on the open arm of my machine and then serged it.
8. Put the collar on. Measured the length of the collar space. Took off two inches to there would be some stretch, cut a piece of ribbing that long and 3 inches wide. Folded right sides together and sewed the ends then turned it. Put the top point at the edge of the collar and eased it in. I divided the collar in 4 and the neck edge in 4 so that it would be an even stretch. Serged it. Topped stitched the outside to hold it.
9. Bottom band I measured my hips, took 4 inches off so there would be stretch. Cut a piece of ribbing that length and 7 inches wide. Folded it right sides together and sewed the ends. Turned it right side out. Divided in 4 and the bottom of the jacket in 4, sewed it on with raw edges together on the right side. Then serged.
10. Took the buttons off and laid the zipper behind and hand basted it in before sewing. Took me several tries, but decided starting at the bottom and having that even was the best way. Top stitch it in place.
Fitting and size
This was a 16.5 shirt and worked just right for sizing. Enough material for pockets.
Final Word and Advice
I LOVE this little jacket and think I will wear it a lot. I hope you feel that you can give this a try too.
Grateful Thread
I end each one of my posts with something I am grateful for to help me cultivate my attitude of gratitude. Today I am beyond grateful that i am just about at 1000 subscribers. I think that is when RU-vid starts believing you are a legitimate channel and gives you a few more tools to work with. I can't even believe that 100 people watched my channel, never-mind 1000. I am so grateful for all of you. You inspire me. Help me. Encourage me. Educate me. Lift me up. You are the greatest. I hope these little videos do something to brighten your day and encourage you on your sewing journey.
I love you all.
Please like, subscribe, share this video...and tell your mother, your barber and your librarian.
I hope you are sewing, sewing is so much fun!
See you on Day 192!

This is a super cute make!! I saw a similar jacket on Poshmark for $60 second hand. This was a great brainwave. I adore this bomber!

What a great make. Have you tried fusible tape on the fabric and then positioning your closed zipper in place? I do like hand basting but sometimes the tape is more stable for me. You really do inspire me.
