A metal cutting portable band saw (portaband) is converted into a horizontal / vertical metal cutting band saw chop saw). Harbor Freight has been known to put this portable band on sale for as little as $99. This made it a ripe candidate for modification.
Used in the video:
Portable Band Saw - amzn.to/2fynjCA
Portable Band saw Blades - amzn.to/2fylR2V
TIG Welder - amzn.to/2hRDQSS
TIG Filler Rod - amzn.to/2hRFzrk
7.5 inch Angle Grinder - amzn.to/2vMpoBt
Drill Press Vise - amzn.to/2vugiqf
Solid State Relay - amzn.to/2uvZwd9
Cutting Oil - amzn.to/2uNTSyd
Right Angle Clamp - amzn.to/2fyulSd
Vise Clamps - amzn.to/2vuhZEI
Automatic Center Punch - amzn.to/2vW7i0b

I'll leave the criticism to the others. I just turned the sound down and watched you build it. No narration needed, I knew what you were doing. I know size matters but this would be a nice addition to my 8' X 18' shop. Great video! Thanks

Hello dear man! In general, I enjoy watching your projects. You have good and creative ideas. Some technical notes for safety: 1) Why connect a relay? What does it give? It's an alternating current (AC) and a small motor - what's the benefit of an external relay? Even a small switch can withstand this load (because it's an alternating current). 2) I didn't see that you plugged back the grounding conductor. The motor body MUST be grounded. Grounding should be as close to the motor body as possible to allow good conductivity (low resistance). 3) You use single insulated wires and within a joint that might rub the insulation over time or be damaged by heat or something sharp. It is advisable to use a dedicated cable for high friction, and put in a flexible insulation pipe (made of durable material). 4) Wherever you connect soft wire (made of fine fibers) - use an insulated wire ferrules. Good luck!

use double insulated cable though metal, especially with holes. Grommets as well. Also pass earth cable to the main fixtures and the switch should trigger on earth leakage... Best to be safe.

I'm glad someone else also noticed this electrocution hazard too. Those wires through those drilled holes in this machine are a shock of your life (death) waiting to happen.
@anonimous2451
@anonimous2451 4 года назад
It was a beautiful build, but, I too noticed that hazard. There should be a GFCI outlet or breaker used in the electrical part of this build. Commentary for those that are not so savvy with that part of it would have improved the experience a bit. In Addition the entire metal stand needs to be bonded to Ground to help prevent a "Shocking Experience". I simply do not have the skill with welding to pull this off, but damn, I certainly appreciated the craftsmanship.
@Fix_It_Again_Tony
@Fix_It_Again_Tony 4 года назад
I noticed the same thing. Also the whole thing should be grounded. The base as well as the arm because you can't rely on the bearing as a conductor.

Just bought that saw, your video gives me some ideas. I thought about adapting an old wood miter saw to hold the Bauer, that way it would give me the ability to do angle cuts. Their are plenty of $25 chop saws on FB Marketplace, just finding one that I could adapt easily will be the harder part, an older rugged old all steel one would probably be best. But I like yours having the ability to use it standing up. So the two mods I would do to your design would be making the vise pivot to do angle cuts and having a real table that you could bolt on so you had a larger table vice working off that small shoe on the Bauer. Thanks for the ideas!
@MakingStuff

The original plan was to pivot the vise, but it hits the wheels of the saw. Thanks for watching!

A little overkill but you get points for enthusiasm. You have a mig and a tig, so why don't you just get a horizontal bandsaw? Never mind, stupid question. I was wondering if you were going to fashion a kind of pan so you could use cutting fluid to make your blades last longer. As a vertical bandsaw, I just mount my Milwaukee on a bench vise. Keep doin' what you're doin'!
@MakingStuff
@MakingStuff 7 лет назад
I don't think the HF band and cutting fluid will get along. There are a lot of vent holes in the HF saw and the liquid could easily get in there.

You have my thumbs up as it was a very good build, how ever I have a couple of criticisms, one the finished article should be shown in the beginning as if I did not like it I do not have to watch the rest of it and secondly could you put the total cost of the build. Building stuff is fun but it has also got to cost effective. By the time you buy the metal, design a pivot as we do not all have old bicycles, nuts and bolts, welding rods, the paint the electricity sanding paper etc it becomes nice but not affordable unless you are going to use it a lot. You can buy a horizontal bandsaw on Amazon from $224. I admit your one is probably better.
