I got some of the Kitronik 0.5mm white polypropylene sheet in and it seems to be just as good as the stuff in this product. I've put up a video of it on my channel. I imagine youtube will auto delete it if i link to it, but its easy enough to find. Kitronik are a UK company, but at least we know now what this sheeting is and should be able to find it in other countries no problem.

The best thing about this video is going to the Amazon link and seeing that the company using your video with their logo in the top left hand corner, lol. You are a beast! By far my favorite RU-vidr, in any space, not just the LED / hack /DIY space. Your voice is perfect for voiceover and your demeanor is laid-back and casual, but still has a hint of excitement at the same time. I want to be more like you when I grow up! (I'm 48 years old now, so things are looking good for that lol) maybe I will run into you at Lowe's or Home Depot someday

Great video Chris. I saw some people commenting about using the included strip with WLED. To me it looks like the RGB LEDs are controlled via those WS2811 chips (the black ICs), so you could definitely use WLED for those, but the white LED looks like non-addressable PWM based control. To use with WLED you would just hook up Di, GND and 12V, but you would unfortunately lose the white LEDs.

@@ChrisMaherDIY The diffuser material would be something that is otherwise relatively available on the open market, because I doubt that this company would have specially commissioned a plastic with its own bespoke chemical componentry. As you say: 'where did they get it from?'. I reckon there would be a simple chemical test to identify what material it is (ie what dissolves it or what colour it burns), then approach suppliers or manufacturers of that product. Just some thoughts. Love your work.

Great video and great find on the diffusion material! Definitely keep us updated if you hear back from the company. Also you should cut that barrel plug and wire that power supply directly to the Wago connectors. Those black and green barrel adapters are really only rated for 4-5 amps and can get quite hot.

@@ChrisMaherDIY id imagine youd be mor elikely to find what you want by asking a general plastic supplier rather than the company that wants to sell their own led products. The self build market is their competition. But a plastic supplier would be happy to be known as a place DIYers can get a supply of led diffuser. I was trying to think what the look of the plastic reminded me of and i could remember. But then it hit me, plastic binders, and binder dividers. They tend to be made from polypropylene. But it would be about finding the same thickness and frosting amount to match the plastic you have. from this product. Which is why i'd say find a polypropylene supplier, and offer to do a video about working with them to find a match to the plastic that comes with this product. Those companies already have peoples who's job it is to help customers find the right plastic, send out samples etc. i'm sure they would be more than happy to help.

@ChrisMaherDIY Год назад
Good to hear from you as always and thanks for watching! They are about 86 cm or around 34 inches so they are a nice size! For sure the more pixels the more power. I'm using your design to make custom LED baseboard and am ready to get started but after pricing 1/8" white acrylic at my local Lowes and Home Depot, and considering how big my room is, I've had to put the project on hold temporarily until I can find a more economical diffuser material. Have you heard anything back from the company yet? What would you recommend me to use for the baseboard diffusers with what is available on the market right now?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Год назад
Unfortunately I have not heard anything back yet. I'll reach out again and see if they get back to me this time with any good news! Yeah acrylic is not cheap especially if you get it in the big sheets but the big sheets is what is going to look the best so you dont have seems every 12 inches like you would if you just buy the squares.
@jasonevans6609
@jasonevans6609 Год назад
@@ChrisMaherDIY The only big acrylic sheets I can find are white translucency 55%. Is that 55% translucency going to let enough light through or too much through and not diffuse enough? Have you ever used 55% before? I hate to spend a ton of money purchasing it and it either not let enough light through or let too much light through. Thanks.
@jasonevans6609
@jasonevans6609 Год назад
If anyone has used the 55% translucency acrylic and has any opinions as to whether it lets the proper amount of light through (or too little or too much) I'd really appreciate your input, too.

Chances are that diffuser is just 0.015 translucent styrene. It is used all the time in the signage industry. It normally comes in large sheets and is incredibly easy to work with. You just need to check into your local sign makers or plastic suppliers.

I use Dupont Jumper Cables, you can get them with male and female ends to suit and in various lengths, you can find them on eBay/AliExpress. You can use the female end on the header on the ESP, and cut the other connector off and strip a bit of cable to go into the Wago connector.

Hello Chris! Amazing video first of all. I have a question though. Should I run it using my TVs USB port?(LG C2 OLED) I have plugged it in, it works fine and helps me turn it on and off with the TV remote (as it is connected to the USB port). I am just concerned about the long term effects on my TV. I have limited the brightness limiter to 500ma.

just found a supplier in the uk called kitronik, called White Polypropylene Sheet 0.5mm x 1020mm x 720mm There is a video on their page, and the white colour seems to be near enough identical. the sheets that come with this product even look like they might be the same dimensions as those sheets only cut in half. so 1020 x 360mm

@@ChrisMaherDIY As someone who works in supply chain, they almost certainly do not make this material, they just buy it. For many product companies, knowing what materials to combine to create something useful is their "intellectual capital" - they don't actually MAKE the material. They are really just like you except they are mass producing with profit as their primary goal. To tell you their secrets, or even worse sell it to you, would be counter to their goal, as DIYers can make really cool stuff instead of buying it from them. Really, when you think about it, you are one the LAST people they would want to tell! I don't know what your day job is, but you'd make a great product development engineer!
