DIY Modular 4Runner / SUV Sleeper Build & Tour
In this video, I'll show you how to build your own modular sleeper to turn your 4Runner or similar vehicle into a mobile or stealth camper / RV.
Nick Carver's Video:
• DIY SUV Bed Platform (...
List of tools
     Screwdriver
      Ratchet set
      Cordless drill & bits
      Something to cut pipes (chop saw/metal cutting blade)
      Dremel and steel grinding tip
      Circular saw (table saw)
      Tape Measure
      Allen Wrench
      Level/Straightedge/square
      Carpet knife
Sewing kit
      Understanding and tolerant spouse
      Staple gun
List of materials
     1X4 plywood (layout cuts for quantity)
      Indoor/outdoor carpet (layout pattern for sf needed. Don’t forget leveling platform)
      1" Steeltek pipe 21+ ft (check purchase length vs/ lengths needed)
      Round Steeltek brackets (8)
      Oval Steelteck brackets (8)
      Rubber feet (16)
      Screws (I used 8 X 1 1/4" Power Pro Multi-Material)
      Washers (48) 1/4" diameter oversized.
      Bolts (48) I used rounded head, 1/4" X 2 1/2"
      D rings (6)
      Turnbuckles (open ended) (6)
      Mattress (memory foam or other)
Turnbuckles (closed ended) (2+)
Attachment Brackets - "4 in 1 rope hook" from Everbilt (2+)

Steps:
1. Measure your truck.
Protip - I tried cardboard template; use coreplas or something sturdier; this could also be helpful for leg lengths and more exact cuts.
2. Cut plywood into the 4 pieces needed (plus leveling platform, typical)
Protip - Think about ALL your pieces and layout cuts on the plywood as efficiently as possible.
3. Check fit. (I just found a cardboard box that was about 12” tall and laid the plywood on that in the 4Runner.)
4. Cut off 4” X 10” angles at rear plywood pieces
5. Check fit
6. Cut framing boards. You do not need to follow exact pattern that I did, but it could affect the length of the legs if you move the framing around.
7. Cut structural pipe and grind off any sharp edges.
8. Install rubber feet onto legs.
9. Laid out brackets. I bought some of each kind not knowing what I would need. You can move them slightly from where I had them if you want, just make sure there are no obstructions.
10. Assemble and test fit; screw framing boards onto plywood pieces, but only use enough screws to hold it in place so you can test fit (~2 per board). Add oversized washers to standard screws to hold the leg brackets in place. Insert leg piping into brackets and test fit with all pieces installed. Make adjustments as needed.
11. Disassemble everything.
12. Cover plywood pieces with carpet
Protip - Be careful and make sure carpet is on the right side of the plywood pieces and that it is all going the same direction.
13. Permanently attach all trim boards in place.
14. Through bolt all leg brackets.
15. Check fit.
16. Paint plywood and trim boards.
17. Layout D-ring locations.
18. Attach D-rings.
19. Install all the platform pieces, install toggles and tighten. If adjustments in leg length are needed, cut a 1” wooden dowel to lengthen, or cut the steel pipe to shorten.
20. Assemble bedding.
21. Happy hour.

Funny that you and nick are some of my go tos for RU-vid. Used to be a pro photographer in OC SoCal so I always liked his stuff. People that have similar interests always tend to find each other

Nick's an absolute maniac. I can't even imagine all the places he's seen. I finally gave him one of my GoPro's and said he needs to start recording his adventures. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Margaritas, chips and salsa are the most important components in this build. 😂

Try sleeping with your head at the back of the truck and slide the seat up for more leg room 👍🏻 I’m 6’4” and sleep comfortably in my 4Runner with the front seat slid up. Some guys add a little platform that hinges out of the way when the passenger seat is in use but adds a few inches when the seat is forward. Great video!

Thank you. I'll have to try sleeping the other way.

Another pro tip an electric fishing knife works great for cutting memory foam. 👍🏻

Thanks for turning me on to the Steeltec fittings; I used the 3/8” diameter version to add support in some weak areas under my platform. I used wooden dowels to determine the steel post lengths.

I walked away with the gem, never cut anything on the kitchen floor if your wife may find out. Check! ... Nice DIY work, one question I have to ask, what is the fake grass for? I've owned a class B RV for over five years and 70K miles and I've never seen anyone bringing a 2' by 2' square piece of grass. Have a good one and love the videos.

I didn't even realize I did that until I was editing. I'm lucky I got away with it. The turf is to stand on when I shower. Keeps your feet from getting muddy.

🧠, piano hinge attached to head end of bed platform with 3/4" plywood to fold out with front seat pushed all the way forward for sleeping mode. Flip it back onto main bed platform in the morning. Should give you around 4" extra length.

That's a great idea!

We are building out our 4runner (hopefully) soon and this is one of my fav setups so far!

I can't get Tina to sleep in it. In her defense, it is pretty restrictive to get in and out with the full platform. If I could do it over again, I think I'd probably use a single piece construction with just the single sleeper. I use that often. But when we both go out, we use a tent. Nice you got away from Jeeps!

We have the camping plastic tote also - to organize inside, we use mesh stuff sacks to organize gear by activity. Old backpacking trick.

Smaller boxes or nylon zippered bags to sort stuff works well.

I also ended up going modular with 4 pieces. I used the "crutches" method (it's how I describe it) to get my kit level in my Rogue. It has the same issues with necessitating different pipe/leg lengths. BUT, fitting it like crutches -with adjustable ends - means I can actually switch the kit between my car and my son's car. I can also lower or raise my platforms so that I can have a raised "bedside table" portion...which, incidentally, hides a Jackery underneath, perfectly.

That's a brilliant idea!

To get more length on your sleep platform, could you make a foldable extension that can be used when the front passenger seat is flipped forward?

Jerry, have you ever used a pocko pad that used on rafting trips? It usually as comfortable as your home mattress. Mine is a “Jack’s Plastics”. They’ve indestructible. Absolutely love it and I’m 75 yrs old.

Learned two things from this video: the bug net for rear window, and the 4runner is too short for me (5'11). Don't think I can sleep too well with my feet pushing against the lift gate when lying on my back
@Don-md6wn
@Don-md6wn Год назад
The 4Runner can accomodate up to about 6'2" if you shove the front seats forward, and the back is flat if you get the optional sliding cargo deck. But I'd rather tent camp than sleep in my 4Runner, and I need all the cargo space on a long trip.
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona Год назад
Agreed on the space for longer trips. And my wife prefers a queen air mattress and tent. But for short trips, this is my go to set up. Someone on here talked about making an extension where you can push the rider seat up and have a longer sleeping platform. I'm sure something like that would work.

Awesome Jerry! It’s is pretty sad how much they charge for these platforms pre built. I built a similar module platform for my Tacoma, for a quarter of the price. What kind of wood did you use? Love how you did the legs…never heard of structural piping. Rest well!
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona Год назад
I didn't pay much attention to the wood. Just the cheapest 1X4's they had and a mid level plywood sheet.

what was the cost of this build for you? not the cooler, battery etc, just the sleep system.
@JerryArizona

I think it was somewhere in the $6-800 range overall.
