What a great quilt! Looks like a puff quilt pattern but with single pieces instead of a bunch of individual puffs sewn together. No wonder it was tough to plan out and sew! Great job!
Better you than me. I’ll be buying all mine. Bought everything I needed but used the Climashield apex. Man my hands are so rough if I just barely touched the stuff it was grabbing my fingers ect like Velcro. That was a disaster. Had to scrap the whole project

First video of yours I've seen. WOW what a great job on that. I'm no seamstress but, I fully understand compression of fiber fill - you sir NAILED it! I hope I see a review video in your play list!? I'm taking in knowledge right now, I think I'm going to give this DIY thing a go.... Cant afford buying everyone in the house the best, so I figured I'd just make it!
WOW, that looks awesome! Wish I could make my own gear. I tried a short UQ with that same close cell foam pad from Dutch and I had a problem with condensation so I switched to a small inflatable set pad I got at REI and that worked great. I really enjoyed your video and the enthusiasm for what you made is great. I'll definitely sub your channel. Oh, I think that cord is ether zing-it, lash-it or dynaglide. I have dynaglide whoopie slings on my hammock, I can't recall now but seems like they are about half the weight of Amsteel. Thanks for sharing.

Question: to make a quilt warmer, say 10°, do you use wider baffle material or just more down? Yours is beautiful! What a great job! I’m trying to make a simple quilt and copying my EE quilt I already have.
Wow. I watched this and your top quilt video - you have mad skillz! Note that your UQ may sag toward the middle on the line going thru the channel. I've seen where some have a "secondary" suspension that pulls the ends of the UQ away from the middle to keep it from sagging. Maybe the friction of your yellow line (Dyneema?) will keep it from doing this. I envy your sewing skills - all I have been brave enough to try is making a tarp!
How did you factor in differential cut? I saw on HF there is a calculator thingie somewhere to give your dimensions...but I am unclear about how I will one day in the future determine my own dimensions to get the differential...did you do a diff for length and width? Wish you would have shown a bit of your "pleats" done along the perimeter..but I guess that is pretty self explanatory. This idea that the karo step in those dimensions seems to lock in your down is intriguing...but given that is the fact it seems, I think the traditional baffles will be much easier for a DIY project? Still, you just do not see UQ that look THAT way so that is really cool from an aesthetics point of view. Also, I love how you have used all sort of light colors for the hammock and quilts...
I didn't use any algorithms or calculators to determine my differential cut. I just made the karo boxes 1 inch bigger in both dimensions on the outer shell. Then I added a couple inches to the outer edge of the boxes on the perimeter of the outer shell. The lager boxes is what makes for the 'differential cut' and allows the down to not get compressed when the quilt curves, in any direction. The extra fabric on the edges allows the quilt to loft up from the inner shell, essentially in provides fabric to make side walls and means the outer boxes don't get compressed. Hope that makes sense to you? I've used the quilt a lot now and I can confirm it all works really well, just as planned.
I've done buttonholes on some gear before, nothing wrong with them. I just feel like the metal eyelet is not only more durable, but it makes for less friction when pulling the string and gives it a more polished feel all together. Its just a preference thing, nothing wrong with the buttonhole.
That uq is amazing. I just ordered the materials for mine. I would love it if you could hook me up with some more dimensions and details on this build. It would be greatly appreciated.

I'm following your karo method for a top quilt. I've watched all your videos, taking detailed notes. I'm using a 0.66oz 10D nylon taffeta. My machine just can't get the right thread tensioning. No matter how much I loosen the tension the top thread lies on top of the fabric. And the fabric keeps getting sucked down into the bobbin too. Any tips?
@@TomTomLo1 the bobbin goes in a bobbin shuttle. Sometimes there is a screw on the shuttle. It can come loose. If you tighten this screw it will keep more of your bobbin string under your project. "Bobbin tension"
Can you tell us were to get the down. I'm looking all over the net. My girl and I are starting our first underquilt tonight based on your design. Just no baffles, I just don't go out in any weather under 40 deg. However if it comes out good we may do a 2nd one for colder night. Thanks a million. Your videos rock.
Dutchwear gear sells MYOG supplys and you can buy down in 3 ounce packets..i just got some in the mail the other day for a pillow slip for an inflatable pillow project im making.
Great video and fanstastic work! +dubber I'm probably gonna end up making one for myself. I'm curious though, with the 12oz of 950 and using the UL materials, what's the compression like? ie: what size stuff sac/compression sac does it fit in? It's similar in materials/weight to the Sea To Summit Spark SpIII sleeping bag and that thing fits in a 3L compressional sac. Keep up the great work bud.
+Ryan Hegarty Hey man. This UQ has 7-8 oz 950 fill down in it (12-13oz is its total weight). And I actually own a sea to summit spark sp1 bag, and have put this in sp1's 2.5L compression sac. It compresses to roughly the same size as the spark sp1 (fully compressed) even with all the cordage and hardware (which as you may know is incredibly small- compresses to a little over 1 liter). However, lately I tend to not use compression sacs anymore, opting to loosely stuff my down into my pack.
Very cool man, that's good to know. Are you concerned about damaging the down over time by compressing it or is there another reason? PS; watched your TQ DIY MYOG vid too, was badass, definitely adding it to my todo list!
+Ryan Hegarty I just find it loads up my pack more efficiently. Fill it all the voids between other stuff and distributes all load better. plus, saves the weight and hassel of compression sacs

Your high end ultralight setup for $400, were you able to stay within that budget? Can you show a video layout of the setup you are trying to accomplish?
Ahhh yes. Will do. Sometime in the next week or two ill set it up and give everyone a tour. Yes, it came in under $400 US for the hammock, tarp, and under quilt. The top quilt did put me a bit over budget though...
You mention that this baffle design is very hard to fill, yet perhaps even more stable than tubular baffles once filled. If you were to make this quilt again, would you do something different with the baffles like leaving more space or using tubes instead? BTW, bikes and instruments are by no means clutter : )
idk if hes using the same exact..but dutchwear gear makes sells MYOG supplys and has the smallest diameter made for hanging underquilts..i think i got 25ft for 5$..
Where would someone buy the materials for something like this? Presumably online? I do a lot of sewing but have never come across decent technical material or quality down (I've seen feather down with quills though). I'd love to start making some of my own gear, would save me a ton of money. I'm currently in the UK, but could have family in the US send stuff if there's a good place that doesn't ship internationally in case that helps. Great job btw, really impressive!
