My dad taught me to take the old filter and rub the ring against the new filter's ring, therefore you don't have to use your finger. Yes it's old oil but it's always worked for us many decades later

This video guided me in changing my own oil. Much appreciated. One minor note is that the level lines on that particular oil extractor are not in quarts, but in liters as best as I can gather. Liters and quarts are within ~5% of each other, so, not a big deal...

Great info on this video! Only caveat I have is that I wouldn’t worry about measuring exactly how much oil you get out. Move the tube up and down to get as much out as you can. These SVHO engines seem to consume a little bit of oil. You want to then put about 3.25-3.5 quarts back in (includes filter change), then start it up and let it run a minute or two, shut it off. Let it sit 5 minutes, then check oil. Add as much as necessary to fill to just below second hole on dipstick. If you only put back in exactly what you took out you might not be putting enough back in. I just changed mine at around 60 HRS and checked it just before I did and the oil level was a third or so past the first hole. And I did the 10HRS change as well and it was full to second hole. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Remember to factor in the oil that resides in the oil filter when refilling. Will shows using a funnel to put the filter oil into the extractor canister. You can also use the oil extractor tube inserted into the bottom of the oil filter to suck up what oil it contains and have it go back into the canister. That's when I check to see how much oil I extracted. Great video Will!! It helped confirm for me that I was doing my oil extraction the right way.

Excellent! Thanks. I bombed the like button. Dealer told me to change the oil after the first 10 hours (break-in) . He said no need to change the filter at that time? What do you think?
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot Год назад
Depends on whether or not you want metal shavings in your filter. The reason for the 10 hour oil change is to remove oil that could be contaminated with metal shavings from brand new engine parts. At least that's what I was taught.

Great video! I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2024 255 FSH sport H so I've been binging on Yammy content like this! Have you ever tried to lower the trailer jack stand to allow the oil to run forward and settle under the pick-up tube? Maybe it will allow more oil extraction but not sure. I used to do that on my 6.2L Mercruiser on my Crownline 260 bowrider and it seemed to get a little more oil out of the pan. As you mentioned, it best to get as much out as you can. Can't wait to get mine and conduct a full review on the helm master system. Happy boating!

Are you of the opinion for 100-hour oil changes, or less? Also, plug replacement hours as well? Thanks, Dave C
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot Год назад
I typically don't put 100 hours on my boats in a year, so I don't Wait for 100 hours. I do recommend highly replacing engine oil once per year and typically do my oil change when I do my winterization. Plugs I also replace every year and like to do that after the first good run of the new season. This way any fogging oil that was sprayed into the system burns off before I swap the plugs.

Can you do this at the dock and warm it up in the lake?
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 4 дня назад
@lukecyphers7831 yes, the oil change process does not require the boat to be out of the water. One note, if the boat is level you may not get as much oil out as you would if the boat is sitting at an angle with the bow up. Maybe do it at a launch ramp if it's not busy. Don't block a busy loading ramp.

@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot Месяц назад
Measure how much you got out of the filter and add to the total you extracted. Then add back the amount you got out total. Then run the engine on the hose and check the oil again. Must check the MR1 when hot. Do not overfill!

So my flush connection is in the same compartment as the cleanout port plug. So when you lift the compartment lid it has a cutoff switch is there any tricks that I can do to keep the boat running without having to hold the kills witch down?
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 9 месяцев назад
There should be some cutouts in the fiberglass that allows the hatch to be shut and the hose situated in one of the cutouts. I'd open the hatch, connect the hose, shut the hatch. Go and start the engine, then start the water running. Let it run 5 minutes then shut the water off. Rev the engine a few times to Blowout any excess water in the system and then shut down the motor. Then you can open the hatch, remove the hose or switch to the opposite engine on a twin engine model.

I've got a question about fogging they I have gotten mixed answers on. I had someone at a dealership saying that because we're in tennessee that we don't have to do that because fogging is done more typically for boats used in saltwater. What would you suggest on the fogging in my area?
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot 8 месяцев назад
Always fog if the engine is going into storage for more than three months. The valves can stick if not lubricated well during periods of long storage. It's not hard and worth the time it takes.

Remove the air box cover and air filter and spray the fogging oil directly into the air intake tract. Run the engine on the hose at around 2000 rpm and try to use 1/2 can of Yamaha fogging oil per engine.

Seems to me the very 1st step in this process should have been to put a level ob top of the engine or see if Yamaha has a designated spot on the engine to check if it is level
@JetBoatPilot
@JetBoatPilot Месяц назад
I guess some of the old MR1 engines could benefit from this. The newer 1.8 engines are a wet sump engine and the oil accumulates down at the bottom of the engine. Most times we crank up the tongue jack all the way to the top to get the max oil out of older MR1 equipped boats. If you want to have the boat level to check the oil I'd use the ride surface just beneath the engine, out near the edge of the hull. It's nice and flat there.
