Today we look at how to clean movements at home without an expensive cleaning machine. We will also look at cutting shaped glass. The case will also need some help with its rose gold plated finish. The movement is an eta 2879 with automatic and quickset day-date complication. Hopefully these tutorials help you hobbyists out there.
Fancy a nice nekkid watchmaker T-shirt?

This channel is by no means a nonsense channel, the work we get to see done here is magical, bringing something back to life that looked ready for the scrap pile is unbelievable, It's a pleasure to watch someone with so much skill work and also listen to that calming voice.

I get great satisfaction watching this channel (and others) where the author simply does *the very best job they can do.* Shows that someone still takes pride in their work. Certainly NOT a nonsense channel because it give you a break from the bad world outside. Eases your mind for a little while. There is certainly worth in that.

I am 75, I started repairing Quart movements watches after seeing your videos....so far, I have put lives back into about 14 vintage watches. They gave me great satisfaction in doing so. Thank you.

How would you recommend starting? First steps? Also, did you have any repair-type experience?
@peterwong1531
@peterwong1531 Год назад
@@SuperScottCrawford I totally have no experience in repairing watches but I love watches. When I saw all my wife's and my watches laying around "dead"...I thought it will be a good idea to bring them back to life..sending them to the shop will cost me a bomb... so I watch alot of RU-vid on the subject and learnt from the experts...I bought the recommended tools, and then opened the watch case to see the movements...each movement has the manufacturer name and the model number...so I ordered them from China..if you get the correct movement it will fit nicely onto the watch dial because the movement has dial feed holes and it will fit nicely onto the movements holes. Once this is fitted, you need to put the hour, minutes and second hands back...here you need some skill and patience. You can watch how the experts do that from the RU-vid. Initially, I damaged a few movements and I learnt from my mistakes. As the saying goes, practice make perfect...I have so far put lives back to more than 40 watches..some were from relatives and friends...it will give you great pleasure when you see a 30 years old Quartz watch ticking away. Now, I am modding watch...meaning to say, I buy the watch cases, mechanical movement and I assemble them..hope I have given you some confident to start this hobby..if you need further info, do let me know..take care.
@SuperScottCrawford
@SuperScottCrawford Год назад
@@peterwong1531 thank you very much for your time and help! To clarify, from what I understand, "movement" is essentially the entire mechanism of the watch (minus hands, faceplate), correct? Interesting. So if that's the case, are you recommending starting by replacing entire mechanisms at first, then proceed to the intricacies of unassembling the mechanisms when you gain enough confidence and experience to do so? Again, thanks for your 🕰️ and 🧭!
@peterwong1531
@peterwong1531 Год назад
@@SuperScottCrawford Hi... movement is the entire assembly. Normally, if you buy this, it will comes without the hour, minute and second hands. So you just swap the new movement with the faulty one. Before you do that, you need to confirm whether it is a faulty movement or just flat battery. Replace a battery first to see whether the watch runs. If not then look out for the same movement and replace it. For you i will not encourage you to just change the coil, it is very tedious process. Just change the whole movement.

It is a privilege to watch you work. Most people who call themselves watchmakers only seem to know how to clean movements and replace parts with new ones. Exactly, I hate people like that who take a title without putting in the actual work, it's comparable to stolen honor. Not to that extent, but pretty close, restoring timepieces like this takes a lot of training and practice that not many can achieve. A trained monkey could probably write a few sentences, but that doesn't make him Shakespeare. This is a true art form.

True, and keep in mind too that pursuits like repairing watches can also furnish object lessons in goodness, which maybe our dear NW has not noticed like overlooking the forest when one is always busy with trees. Sometimes, it seems from watching the videos of several watch repair aficionados including NW, a watch really only needs a service, to be disassembled and cleaned and reassembled and lubricated and sometimes regulated to better timekeeping. Sometimes it needs more, like the replacement or reshaping of broken or damaged or missing parts. In an analogous way, God operates on souls submitted to Him.

Patience is a virtue not taught as often as it used to be. What I really love about your video is the patience involved. Teach your kids this one small thing and the world will be a better place.

Patience is more than a virtue l.p., it is one of the 9 fruitages of the Holy Spirit described at Galatians 5:22&23. And yes the world will be a much better place when the theocratic government under Jesus Christ rules the earth after Armageddon, and these 9 fruit fruitages are practiced by everyone.

Beautiful to view. 65 years ago I was the little boy, and my father repaired watches as a hobby. To clean them, he had a multi-tray basket, with a central spindle. That spindle fitted into one of two drives of a food mixer (MixMaster in Australia). There were to or three containers of solutions, one of which smelled a lot! He had very few special tools. I have some of them and a cardboard box containing five (?) bottles of brightly coloured oils and grease (?). Your comments at the end are uplifting. Well done Nekkid Waatchmaker!

The last few minutes of your videos are always the best part, but not because of the beautiful watches but because of your beautiful words.

"Change with your hand, if you can't then change with your voice, and if you can't at least wish it changes in your heart this is the least we can do" this is Prophet Mohamed saying, it is a great message which can really make a difference.

Joe, your videos are never a distraction. They are therepy to a lot of people, includig me. Your channel brings back fond memories of my grand father who looked after the clocks at Monsanto in Wales, until his retirement in 1967. He also repaired clocks and watches in his spare time, and continued to do so, well after his retirement. I've always marvelled at these tiny mechanical masterpieces. You're such a kind, gentle soul.

That little watch came out fantastic, let's be honest, it was an eyesore at best at the beginning and such a happy, pretty watch in the end. Thanks for sharing your gifts, we appreciate it.

"and fish Lego pieces out of a child's nostrils". I was laughing my ass off at that! witty commentary is what makes this channel a pleasure to watch along with the sheer satisfaction of seeing these brought back to life. and I agree; enough grease to open a fish and chips shop, indeed.

"Can I have a moment of your time?" - My Columbo impression. And it's good to see you back. It's always nice to have something good to take away from all the bad in the world. Keep keeping on brother! And always remember, evil only triumphs when good people do nothing. You do good work my friend. It's nice to see these little marvels of engineering brought back from the brink.

I appreciate your humbleness but you are a master craftsman who has spent his life learning and refining some rather impressive skills. Of course we are, most of us, "regular dudes" but you have built a community of people who appreciate your particular set of skills. We come here to see you demonstrate them and lean and be inspired so it is not at all surprising that you would get many complements.

I know it's not possible for us to see, but I can imagine the reactions of those owners lucky enough to have chosen you to take their broken old timepieces and have them restored to this level of perfection. Thank you so much for your work. I stumbled across your channel as a watch enthusiast but now I just watch for the pleasure of watching these beautiful pieces come back to life.

Yes you are correct, this world is hard to understand and sometimes navigate. As far as i'm concerned, you have all the right to say your peace, and you always do it with kindness and concern for your fellow being. The watch you repaired was nothing short of amazing, your talent shows that we can all "fix" something. May you and yours be well.
