I made a 165" outdoor projector screen using FlexSeal and an old motorized insect screen. Stick around to the end to see me compare my DIY screen to a professional screen. Thank you to Zemismart for sponsoring this video, check out their new window coverings:

I picked up a 70 inch motorised screen, with all additional cable, plastic conduit and fittings, even the screws, for just £60/$75 last week. The seller was upgrading his screen and was looking for a quick sale. It is in perfect condition as the seller really takes care of his equipment. At that price, why would I even consider spending megabucks on a touch-and-go DIY job like this?

As soon as you started sanding I thought "Nooooo they sell matte-ifying spray at Home Depot!" I would try spray painting the white Flex Seal a darker grey color. All good projector screens aren't solid white, but some form of grey, as the darkest an image can get is the screen itself. I've dealt with projection systems in a number of churches, it's a more fleshed-out market than you might think. But at scales smaller than theatrical-size, there really is no substitute for an actual television screen.

If you wanted to do it over from scratch you could have started flat on the garage floor and used less of the FlexSeal. Then sand it smooth for the spray paint. Also i think there are paints out there to paint walls to make a screen that are formulated for projectors that would give you even better performance than flat paint does. This one popped up in my exhaustive 2 minute search: www.projectorscreen.com/projector-screen-paint-on-screen. I suppose at this point it's time to move on to other things. I would be interested in projects to use a stepper motor. I bought a beefy one recently to play with but I don't really have an application. I don't want to build a CNC machine because they are cheap enough to just buy better and things like curtains can use regular motors and switches. Around the house there's not much to do but open and close doors, cabinets, and shades. My biggest issue is how would I physically attach a motor to a thing like a door from scratch. And not look extremely tacky.

@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 2 года назад
I do have a small piece of screen that I cut off of the original one that I have been using to test out different materials. The issue with going with any colored finish is that if it doesn't stick well to the flex seal then the spots where it scrapes away are really obvious. With the clear matte you don't really notice if a part flakes off and you can just give it a quick spray if it becomes an issue with glare.

Surprised you didn’t just try an ambient light rejecting (ALR) fabric from the onset. It’s paintable, but Flexseal wd have been pointless. Probably cheaper to use the ALR fabric. Lots of videos on RU-vid for mixing your own ALR grayish w/ metallic paint (black grey white) undertones that gives nice reflectivity for vibrancy without any glare. And such ALR screens are watchable during some daylight periods. The ALR screens (even home made) really are many times better than an all white screen of any type. And ALR paint mix 3/4-1 gal can be made for $65-90. I made a 72in ALS painted screen for $125 and it performs as well as a $500 pre made screen.

Harbor Freight sells mesh tarps with grommets all around the outside, and the gaps are not as uniform and overlap some, which might help the blow out on the other side. I might give that a try since I don't have the mountable area for a roller. If the plasti-dip worked well for the border, they make gray and clear smoke colors and they're much more matte. Could you sand the flex seal and just spray some of that?
@TheHookUp

The issue with going with any colored finish is that if it doesn't stick perfectly to the flex seal then the spots where it scrapes away are really obvious. With the clear matte you don't really notice if a part flakes off and you can just give it a quick spray if it becomes an issue with glare.

I did some experimentation with a roller. The texture and stickiness of the flex seal causes it to fling off the roller much more than paint does. You have to go extremely slow to avoid covering your surroundings in flex seal splatter. The other issue would be convincing a buddy to come over and subject themselves to hours of flex seal painting. I've got some good friends, but maybe not that good :)

I need an UST projector for church. Around 2500. I’m looking at the epson LS500. I need the image to be around 16 feet wide 9feet tall and I need the projector sitting on the Floor. I know the projector says up to 130 inches. But I’m moving it out further from wall. The LS500 is 4000 lumens. My question: Is their a better UST projector around 3K dollars that you would suggest. Or is this the best? The Awol 2500 has less lumens but would it be better? Any suggestions please. Also if I do a paint on screen does it really matter if it’s a projection paint or not? I would not recommend the LS500, it will not be able to properly focus a 150" screen. LTV2500 does have the ability to focus at 150", but may be too dim if you have ambient light (especially if you are using a paint on screen). My recommendation would be Epson LS800 which is $3200 for 4000 lumens and can focus a 150" screen, only downside is the black levels aren't great: amzn.to/3KyNUMa

@TheHookUp Год назад
I'm not aware of any UST that can handle a 200" screen, the focus will be fuzzy for sure. With the LS800 you might be able to get away with 160" before it gets too blurry. A short throw projector for the same or similar price doesn't really exist ($3000 is a strange price for non UST projectors, most are under $2000 or over $4000). But the Optoma 4K400STx would fit the bill. It's a bulb projector though, so expect to need to replace the bulb ever 3000 hours or so.

Great video detailing your outdoor theater project! I'm glad you decided to compare it to a 'real' ALR screen as a control. Looks like you and your sponsor both know your audience! I have legitimate questions on the shades, though, as we're thinking about purchasing them. Our new home is almost done being built, so we're looking at smart blinds for the whole house. I'm glad you pointed that these can integrate with HA, they're a great fit for this channel. Can these Zemismart blinds be flashed with Tasmota or ESPHome firmware for local control? Are the motors reasonably quiet? Are they acceptably fast to open and close? Thanks!
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 2 года назад
1) Can these be flashed with Tasmota/ESPHome? No, they use the Tuya WBR3 chip, which is not ESP based. Tuya is working with home assistant to make a local integration but its not set in stone yet. BUT, that's not how I would control them anyways. If I were doing a whole home installation of these blinds I would use a broadlink RMPro (local polling HA integration) or Sonoff RF Bridge with Tasmota (Local MQTT) to learn the RF commands, that way you wouldn't need 10 different WiFi devices. 2) At 2:10 I left the sound of both blinds in and didn't speed up the footage. The roller shade is quieter and faster than the cellular blinds.

wrinkles in the screen... no thanks. not for people with OCD. I am not even a video/audiophile and I wouldn't do this.

It's definitely not the same quality as an indoor screen. However, if you look around online at outdoor screens I think this is a better result than even some of the $4000-5000 ones.

You would be surprised what your mind can ignore, we use to enjoy outdoor movies on the side of our shed, which had siding. The horizontal lines eventually "disappear". For proper view, yes the indoor setup is preferred, but outdoors is fun, and usually affords a larger audience! We find movies that are "so bad they are good" are the best to show outdoors!

I actually did that shortly after posting this video. I got pro gray, I’ll post a comparison when it arrives.

The truth...this was an incredibly horrible and janky idea. Except, it made that moderately entertaining RU-vid content and of course the ohh so valuable Title/Thumbnail. It was diy but it certainly wasn’t economical. There’s plenty of more logical diy options.

No doubt. I think I said that in the first 20 seconds of the video.

Total waste of time and materials. Spend 20,000 on a video system and project it on crap. Too little brains and too much money.

@george 777 this must be the 1st video you’ve watched. The channel has a ton of really useful and smart content. Plenty of brains and pretty savvy on how to save money!

Eh. Think I'll just get a custom screen made out of proper material. Nice try though.
