April, you can sure tell you have a proud mamma that wants to help her darling daughter. Most of the time it is the father out there helping his kids. It was really nice to see that you included her in this project.

The video is just right. Right timing, right amount of detail . Reference to plans when necessary. This is NOT a beginner project. The tools alone are considerable and the expertise to use them all. I agree with the stainless steel comment below. Even in the desert. I am glad you are still doing videos for us. For those of us who happen to own a DF500, the 8mm or 10mm dominos will work here as well, but I completely understand the Rockler approach.

While watching this video I took some notes down using my Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencil. But later on had to switch to my Bic blue ball point pen when the pencil needed sharpening. ; - )

Bought the plans. Very well done. Highly recommended. Parts are color coded. Templates use direct measurements instead of grid. Easy to follow. I'm using treated 1 ⅛ inch ( and significantly heavier!) deck plank and will use outdoor glue (Titebond III) on mating surfaces. Experience with outdoor seating projects exposed to the weather tells me these glued joints last a lot longer. I secure the parts with pre-drilled deck screws. A few adjustments in the template dimensions are needed for deck plank. I'll put the back and bottom slats on the frame with screws only in case they need to be replaced.

@@markmiller6402 Don't let that stop you. Projects can always be done with simpler tools, it would just take longer. Most can be done with basics like a circular saw, jigsaw and a drill. She started out buying 2nd hand tools from yard sales or pawn shops, buying only the tool she needed.

If you are building something to last 2-3 years by all means use galvanized hardware. If you think it might be quite nice to have the thing still looking good and usable for 10 years then the ONLY choice is stainless. Galvanized hardware starts to show signs of rust after only a few years. The coating is made as thin as possible to cut down on costs but that makes it very likely to breakdown quickly. Stainless hardware does not cost a lot these days especially compared to the time to make and cost of the timber. In all my outdoor projects and even in a lot of indoor ones I always use stainless if at all possible.

Rounding over all the slats is really important! Built swings for the in-laws and didn’t do that! My chubby legs kept “oozing” between the slats!
