Man, can't believe I missed this one. Finding a TOT vid you haven't seen is like diggin a crumpled up 20 that got washed in some jeans you used to be to fat to wear.
Albion Laster Tony's Wife didn't call.... The conversation would have gone something like this.... Tony: "Honey I found a satellite dish, it would be perfect for showing the kids how parabolic dishes can focus light" Wife: "If you bring home one more piece of trash I am chaining you to the Oxy bottle".... (sound of slamming phone)
"She won't be tryign coffee again till she's at least 30" Tony, that had my rolling! I love love LOVE your humour, that's superb, thank you man! :D It's so awesome seeing makers get their kids involved and interested. I'm seeing that more and more :D
Your daughter's expression when trying coffee tell's it all. She will probably remember building parabolic mirror with dad and first coffee for the rest of her life. What a great memory.
I've watched this video at least half a dozen times, and the amount of science & math (no matter how half-assed) mixed with family wholesomeness brightens even my worst days. Thank you, Tony.
I tell you This old Tony, seeing that you posted a video is the highlight of my day sometimes. I work on the road building hydrocarbon facility's and really want nothing more than to have a good shop like you and grow old fishing. You keep me reminded of what my 70 hr work weeks are getting me. even though I am still chasing the carrot, the stick is getting shorter. thanks for your time and effort :)
I could watch your videos all day you can make any subject interesting and always a chuckle or two. One of my favorite RU-vid channels. Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom. Guy
That was beautiful. Teaching your kids practically like that means life time memories for them. You were superman in that moment. I know, I am two years late...
The sooner kids get real-world science fun (knowledge) the better, and boy have you got plenty to interest them. More kids should have science experiment fun time. Good on you.
When your kids are adults and they see these videos of the stuff you made with them, they are gonna realize how awesome a dad you really were, are, you know... you're a lucky man. ♥️👍🙂
Four years later I am once again going through your earlier Videos and they are still great. Love the and Kind of miss the appearences of the Kids. Looks like you had a lot of fun!
Boy it doesn't take much to make wonderful memories, your kids will remember stuff like this forever, and they will always be in your corner for you. Congrats, I enjoyed this very much, black no cream no sugar , thank you.
Had not seen this one till tonight, really enjoy your videos. Your daughter is 100% adorable. Enjoy, the time, as I can see you are !!! mine is already grew up and gone !!! The very best of years in a lifetime. Doug...
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vJIzkIc_wIU.html He looks exactly like I imagined, not that it matters. The hands view works best, you can't mill with your face, at least I hope not.
Man, this is parenting done right! :) Thank you for putting up these great videos! :) Also I've been subscribed for a while now and wanted to let you know, I use your videos as reference for accuracy and understanding the concepts!
I did the same thing with my daughter and she spit hers out too. Lol. I love your channel and have learned so much from your videos! Thank you for all your hard work! I've been watching for a while now and have always meant to comment. Love the jokes and subtle references. Also, has anyone ever told you, your voice sounds like Alan Alda? Keep up the great work!
I tried this out with my son when he was about 5 or so. That was 30 years ago. We didn't have that super shiny tape that you used. We only used aluminum foil. It warmed up a hot dog after a considerable time but nothing like lighting anything on fire. This was in Florida in midsummer.
So, let me get this straight...You wrapped a hot dog in aluminimum foil and let it out in the sun, and you expected it to be fully cooked? lol No. Just no.
Nice... Your an amazing father, love your humor, and very educational videos... I'm new to milling and turning but after completing 60 hours of machine technology in adult nite classes I think I found my new calling in life.
Ahh the memories.. Graduating from 60mm objectives to Fresnel lenses to make bigger holes in the asphalt (somewhere in 1983 there was a closet full of stripped 3M overhead projectors). I've done this exact thing with junked Offset-feed Ku reflectors, it's amazing how well this works even with the low reflectivity of aluminized duct seal tape. My kids loved the experience too! Great Dad. Keep 'em in the shop, question everything, and absorb it all. Love it!
Good dad! Great project! This is how we grow! Thanks for sharing your project. Much was learned and I'm sure you kindled a fire in those children that will never go out! These may well be our next solar power engineers for the future!
I remember a while back someone commented that he didn't understand why your channel didn't have 100K subscribers... looks like the universe is about to correct itself soon. Pre-congrats Tony.
This might be one of the single nicest videos I've seen on RU-vid. Beautifully voiced, interesting and shows a kindness and respect towards your kids that I find inspiring. How often do you finish watching something and think - "There was nothing bad, mean-spirited or spiteful in any of that"?
You crack me up man. Neat project. I wouldn't have expected that even a big dish like that would catch a piece of wood on fire so quickly. Now to build a sterling engine and see how much power you can generate with it.
If you spray a mist of water near the focal point you may be able to see that focal point. like this guy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z0_nuvPKIi8.html
Excellent suggestion if I may say so. We've all seen Mythbusters and various other programs about focussing the suns rays with a mirror/parabolic dishes etc., but I agree with the presenter, I've NEVER seen wood combust that quickly. Amazing. Regards Mark in the UK
What e pretty cool father you are. Remembers me to my my dad. He is still showing me cool stuff he's doin in his room. And sometimes he's involving me, asking for my knowledge. Kinda cool. Hope your kids are keeping their interests. Really love your vids ❤
I've been keeping my eye out (not literally) for a discarded projection TV so I can snap up the Fresnel lens sheet inside for this similar use. Great to see the young'uns involved in the science.
I'm watching a TOT classic because they're great...............and it's the first night of Daylight Savings and I'm not sleepy yet at 11:30pm. I don't need ANY encouragement to collect other people's junk, but this video really has me thinking. My son would love the experiment as much as Tony's daughter did.
When my daughter asked to try coffee my wife asked what I thought. I assumed that, like most kids, she would try it, spew it and that would be the last I would hear of it for years. What I hadn't counted on was the fact that my wife's coffee is basically a milkshake with a dash of espresso in it. I said yes, and now she's hooked. Dad fail.
You are a great dad, your kids are super lucky. My wife is cooking our first right now, just found out its a girl, i cant wait to do projects with her,
I love your work. And your videos. And your editing. And your humor. And the "collaboration" with your kids. And the stuff you do and how you explain it. 😁👆
Years back, a neighbor got a decommissioned 10' dish, and used it to make a water pond in their yard. It was landscaped with stones around the outside, and a small waterfall. Nice.
I've always known you had to be a dad with your sense of humor. This cute little video was funny proof of that. Awesome kids. Was great to see them make a cameo in your series.
I had this adorable little dachshund that one-time got on my table and drank a half cup of black coffee. Haha she couldn't get enough coffee. She obeyed every rule in the book. Just that model dog that does every trick and snuggles and is nice to everyone. No matter what though, she would find the coffee and she would drink it. Haha God I miss that dog.
My son and I just did this for his science project, but didn't start with a satellite dish. We laser cut rings that when stacked formed a parabaloid. It was really impressive how hot it got even without being very well focused. In fact, for the purposes of cooking stuff, it might be better to have it slightly out of focus. Anyway, he roasted a marshmallow and a hotdog in less than about 15 minutes, with a lot of other kids ooo-ing and ahhh-ing. So much fun! Cool to see the kids enjoying it!
Great work! Your videos are huge hits with my kids (similar age). We watch them together :). Thanks for them. My wife calls me about my neighbors throwing junk out as well ... most times I can smell it though before it actually happens.
This is great! Reminds me of when I made one for high school freshman science class. I used radial foam core board parabolas supporting a thin cardboard wedges. Not very big but managed to pop popcorn in a tuna can.
