I actually grew to like my last planter box, but not enough to throw me off my original plan. So I gave it another shot and was able to nail it this time.

Nice video April! I like this one best of the two. Would be interesting to see how they look when in place, to see how they go with the surroundings.

Very much prefer this one to the last, even a slight taper can make a piece far less boxy and more elegant. Table makers have used the exact same trick for a long time! Top Job!

April very nice job on the planter but as a safety note, at about 3:40 in the video when you are airnailing the top trim together, you hold one piece with your hand behind where you shoot the nail. I have done this many times without incident but recently had a nail exit the wood at an angle and into my finger, probably hit a knot or hardspot in the wood. No major damage just pain(hit the bone) some blood and a lot of choice words but the point is air nails can take paths other than what you intend and inflict personal injury so caution is in order and never shoot airnails in the direction of your sensitive bits even if there is wood in between! keep up the great videos.

Good job. I think you cheated from doing things the "right" way in all the right ways, if that makes sense and still comes across as a compliment. I'm kind of curious how it would look if you had also tapered the boards that you made your bead board out of. Maybe angle overload, I don't know.

for clamps, you might look at PONY CLAMPS. you use standard galv. pipe with these in different lengths. don't use regular black pipe because in stains your wood when you glue.

Hi April, as always a wonderful diy video. I prefer the square planter box, cause it's more stable ( of course top and bottom faces are same size !! ;-) ). Isn't it strange to put weight in the highest half of an "inverted triangular shape" planter box ?? :-P Well nevermind. Your designs are still nice as usual. Keep going on ! Best regards from France

Fantastic April! Do you have a Harbor Freight Tools around you? While the quality isn't 100% their F-clamps are %90 at about %50 the price, if you get my math. Needless to say it's a very good value to up your clamp stock. Walk out with 40 bucks in clamps and you'll add a pile to your stash.

You're doing a GREAT job! Very nice videos, but I would suggest one thing. --- Get a GOOD dust collector system and connect all your saws to that system. I'm watching your videos and can see the sawdust flying around as you cut. That doesn't seem like a big deal now that your young, but as you get older, it may develop into bronchitis or other respiratory problems. -- Good luck and stay well.

Hi, April. Fan from Brazil, here! I missed whether the ends of the strips (corner trim pieces) also have a 4 degrees cut in the ends (I imagine they do)....You solved the problem os the compound angle and that made me more brave to try my own! Thanks!

Been watching some of your videos they are really good. Found you by searching for reclaimed wood flag project. I'll be making one myself but using old pallet material but I liked yours. This planter is cool. You need to make a Garden Size "Tardis". About the size of that planter. I've been toying with myself just haven't gotten to it and don't have the inventory of wood that you have. anyway great videos!!.

Hi April, I think I prefer the tapered one. I recently built a small Limbert style tapered table, and putzed around with bevel-taper jig designs until I finally realized there was an easy way to do a beveled taper (which is a compound cut): I just set my track saw at 46 degrees bevel and the track at the taper angle and cut all 8 beveled tapers in 10 minutes, and they fit perfectly. The joint was invisible on the inside and outside. I'm envious of your SawStop!

Nice job !....(clamp envy?) lol Great video and easy to follow step-by-step instructions. I personally am a clamp fiend, I must have 60 or so assorted clamps, and I feel like I still need to add to the collection ! Distressing the piece really added a nice touch, great idea!

I like the square one, but! I'm an ol square anyways. I like massive stuff and the square one depicts that and masculinity. The tapered one has a little more of a mild, gentler look. (I can't say fem because too many guys would get offended). That just my linkings But then again, I like the natural grain too so who knows? I 'm sure I'll wake up in a different mood tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

Love your work and all your vids, you are much more instructional and a lot less "Look what I can build!" But Please use a push stick on your table saw at least in your left hand. I do like this one better. Not fond of the distressed look but that is just my taste. My girlfriend would love this. With the first take; Could you not have gotten the tapered look by tapering the corner posts that you made out of 2X4? Great job and love your videos. OH and Hi mom.

Totally cool! I liked the square one too, but this one has a little more character! I made one a year ago similar but used screw cover caps up and down the rails and stiles...I then used metal paint from "Sculpt Nouveau" (look it up on RU-vid) and gave it a green/copper patina the screw caps looked like rivets.

April, your vids are so great. The DIY approach is amazing, you put your mind to it and then get it done. I honestly thought I'd like the simple square box traditional planter better, but now I've seen this and understand your original vision, I have to say, I like it a lot. Did you protect the wood inside before adding compost, or was there a plastic pot in there?

I'm sure you know by now, but you should've put plastic in the planter to catch most of the water. I loved both planters, but I really would've loved to see the first planter completed with the feet. I like the angle better but agree with you that with the plant in the first one is does look good. In regards to Dane's comment, there would be nothing wrong with inverting the taper. that would look good and be more practical...Very nice job April :-)

Even thought I wasn't as disappointed with the original video as you were I must say I really like the tapered better. The only problem is see is that since there is no bottom you can't put ballast in the bottom of the planter and it will be top heavy, especially at that height...may have to make a base to increase the stability in breezy weather. With that point made I love the work you do and enjoy the videos very much, you and Steve Ramsey are two that have made me think of starting to document some of my projects, simple but effective designs that real people with real tools can do, thanks for sharing!

Hi from Australia I thought the planter was great. But even greater was the use of the banding system to prevent the bowing in making the panel. That is the thing that never ceases to amaze me since I started woodworking, The never ending use of alternative solutions to the absence of tools and jigs and whatever.

Im not to sure about edge gluing those strips of plywood together like that. Plywood isnt like solid wood in the sense that not all the veneer layers are orientated with the grain length wise. Plus most plywood has a lot of voids and gapes in the layers. My gut feeling is it would be a weak joint. On something small like that, along with the extra strength from the rails, I dont see it being a problem but there are stronger ways of doing that. The grooves can be routed out with a v shaped router bit, a sign making router bit (which would give the double round over edges just like you have), or even narrow, shallow dado.... just sand the edges over until they are rounded. That way theres no need to cut all the way through the plywood.
