I have a Hosta plant on my deck that's at least 22 years old. It's very low maintenance and thank the Lord it blooms every year and I have a vine plant that you can just take a couple of pieces off, stick them in soil, water them and they will continue to grow. I wish I knew the name of it but vine plants are pretty easy to grow.

My goodness, what a great idea using the basket with the laundry bag!
@teejay1650
@teejay1650 2 года назад
I would be very careful using a laundry basket for growing any fruit or vegetables. Toxins from the plastic can leach into the soil, thus into the plant. Especially in the sun as the pot/basket is heated. There are specific plastic containers that are acceptable which you can research on line. Also, Dollar Tree plastics have been shown to contain high amounts of toxins that cause cancer. Not just a laundry basket but the food containers and children’s toys (that they put in their mouths because that’s that kids do). Anyway… just saying be wary.

I decided to Winter over 17 geraniums. They flourished all winter. The beginning of April I took several cuttings from the plants and still have the mother plants. If all cuttings root I will have 50 geranium plants to share with my friends. Our daughter gifted me for my birthday and November to succulents a month for a year. So I'm watching those babies grow quickly right now this spring.

How did you winter them? I don't have alot of luck with keeping them alive. This year will be my year!! Do you think the red flowers in do better or more hardy?

@pamelajefferies3197 I have camping tables.2 of them.They have legs that are adjustable. These tables are long & narrow. So I leveled the tables to the bottom edge of the window sill. My window sills are only two feet off the floor We have huge corners windows 6ft by 9 ft. I put them in the South window.We have a two foot over hang on the outside of the house. Left geraniumsin the house there with saucers underneath them. And watered whenever they were dry. They will have leaves that die off, not to worry. Continue with faith. Hope this helps.

My mom is 93 so this year we did the container plating. So she has tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers and collard green! They are doing well! She has had a garden since I was a child and I am now 59. It is very rewarding to share this with kids and show them how they can have veggies of their own to grow! We also use the dried out seeds that we dry out out and place on medicine bottles and label for next years planting.

Tip on using larger containers - if you don't really need all the soil for a huge plant, save using some soil and take up room with empty smaller nursery pots, empty plastic bottles, pieces of pool noodles or Styrofoam.
@suellenw561
@suellenw561 2 года назад
I put packaging styrofoam in the bottom of 3 LARGE pots about 20 yrs ago & they're still there. You really don't need that much soil depth for most plants. About 6-8" is usually sufficient.

In pots in my home? Well,.... I have a 5 year old Chinese Fan Palm, a large Aloe Vera and 2 of her babies, a 10 year old Double Hibiscus tree, a beautiful Monstera plant, a Bromeliad and a basket planter with a small palm plant and a small prayer plant. THEN I just started some carrots, broccoli, onions, acorn squash, sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, and I'm rooting some sweet potatoes. AND I'm getting ready to root some white potatoees and going to start getting my yard ready and also build some raised beds to transplant the veggies I started indoors. Also, I'm also going to trim my blackberry bush thats in a large container outside and I still have a lot more planting to do: corn, melons, herbs, etc.! I used to have over 50 indoor plants but stopped growing so many indoors. Now I enjoy growing edible plants outdoors and a few indoor plants. Gardening is FUN!!!!

Onions (green, cooking, purple, Spanish and vadalia) Horseradish from roots, ginger from risomes, romaine lettuce from core roots, celery from core root, broccoli from core stem, Orange tree from seed, papaya from seeds, apple tree from seeds, pineapple from leafy root. I'm always trying to grow anything that I have bought but I also forage to find plants to grow for medicines. I do have many house plants as well.

I have A LOT of plants iin containers of all sizes outside after discovering they're much easier to care for than things in the ground. I'm in Southern CA near the beach and get morning sun in front, so have a lot of succulents and rather drought-tolerant things that can take full sun. To keep things looking good all year, I focus on planting perennials that won't die out seasonally. A little searching online provides plenty of information about growing plants in containers.

Hi to all! I am enjoying this video. Yes I have almost all of my flowers and vegetables in containers. I find it easier to grow in containers than in the ground. I grow lettace, potatoes, beets, beens, carrots,tomatoes, spinach and sweet potatoes all in containers. Some are on my deck and some are in the yard. To take up room in the bottom of large containers I put broken sticksand leaves you can also put shredded paper, all of these will break down over time and enrich your soil. Good luck to you on your growing adventures! Just remember the smaller containers need watering more often than larger ones.

That is what I want to know too, to continue my garden longer. In the Spring or around Mother's Day, hanging plants often go on a deep discount sale and are actually cheaper than buying the individual plants many times. They've also been put together by a professional designer, so you know the colors, shapes, and textures go well together.

I have a 8'x12' "shed" w/ very large windows on the south side that I fondly call my greenhouse. A friend laughs that I can't get in it in the winter because I have so many potted plants. I don't even know how many. There are multiples of most. When fall comes again, I will be putting inside the potted geraniums (about 10 now but they may not all fit), a fig tree, several fuschias, maybe 20 cacti that I started from seed, several fibrous begonias that looks like tiny roses, a large hibiscus, 2 hanging begonias, a fancy leaf begonia not grown for flowers, an asparagus fern, a small palm tree & 2 artichokes in separate pots. The ones that go in the house are a Benjamin fig tree, a darantia, several Christmas cacti & an Easter one, a bird-of-paradise, a schefflera, & a few more. We live on the edge of zones 4 & 5 so most of these wouldn't survive outside. I ask myself tho, is the cost of running the electric heater worth saving this many? Usually the answer is "YES." Some I probably can't replace. The peanut cacti came from my grandmother who died over 40 yrs ago. I haven't seen one in stores. The rose flowered begonia is like one she had that I managed to find many yrs ago. I run the risk every yr of something going wrong & I will lose a few before spring. Still, I try.

@@StyleMySweets A question occurred to me today. Would there be some reason why there was a marble in the pot? Although I still have the plant, the original died suddenly about 20 yrs ago. When I removed the dirt, I found a single marble about an inch from the top. It wasn't in the hole at the bottom of the clay pot, so it wasn't to keep the dirt in the pot. There weren't others which might have helped w/ drainage. And when I say "dirt," I mean DIRT that would have been dug up from someplace around the house. BTW, Grandma died in 1973 just days after our son was born. Pop-pop died in 1990 at 89 yrs old. Mom asked if there was anything I wanted before everything was sold at auction. I asked for a PIECE of the cactus. She brought me the whole plant. I started others because I wanted to make sure I had it later. I still have multiple plants from what I took off. That single marble went back in the pot & remains there. Someday someone will get a surprise. I just always wonder why it's there.

I have countless pots and planters outdoors. Little by little I got rid of the lawn out in front, then most of the "flower beds" when I realized it's easier to maintain things in containers, plus easier to control weeds. In the front of my house where I get full sun I do have jade plant in the ground as a hedge across the front, and on one side a mock orange and jasmine. I also have pink jasmine over an arbor at the front (where there's a sidewalk) and a couple of roses in front of the porch wall. That still leaves plenty of room and I have all kinds of succulents, Euryops (yellow daily-like blooms), rosemary, lavender, Indian Hawthorne and other things. On the long part of the porch I switch out herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, etc.

I have homemade cloth grow bags with tomatoes, cucumbers and flowers in my greenhouse, flowers in $ store pots with handles on my patio, painted large size Maxwell House containers I spray painted and hung from copper electric wire going up my art studio steps with veggies and petunias. 15 food safe Lowe’s 5 gallon pots in my fenced garden area that are self wicking. Numerous potted flowers in $ Tree stackable pot towers. And dark grey painted kitty litter buckets with canna bulbs and vining plants also some that hold water near thirsty plants in the greenhouse , keeping the lid on keeps them closed so no mosquitos can get in.... Remember that only use food safe containers for veggies unless you are not worried about chemical releasing into your soil....those $ tree stackable are from China...I bought a case of them and then found out where they came from......if you want your roots to have moisture you can buy floral wet foam and cut into pieces to put on the bottom of a pot, it absorbs all the water sitting there and the soil has moisture...I did this with my cocoa fiber lined basket from $ tree and my flowers are doing very well....

So far there isn’t much we don’t have planted. We have all the flowers and such, rose bushes, azaleas, plus pots all around with annual and perineals. I have cucumbers, squash, zucchini, peppers, carrots, blueberries all planted and growing really well. A truck to start my seeds is I keep the containers that swiffer wet cloths come in and the containers that spring mix lettuce comes in and I use them for seed starting. They are the absolute best greenhouses I have found.

you need a small kiddie pool to put your grow bags in . When you put them in the pool they will grow really well if you put about three inches in the bottom of the pool.

I have 2 huge snake plants, a cactus, Xmas cactus and a succulent indoors. My hubby has raised gardens outdoors with tomatoes, pepper, peas, scallions and zucchini. He also has Basil, Rosemary and Cilantro. Around the yard we have roses, irises, rose of Sharon, wisteria, Lilly of the valley, Mountain laurel, regular mint and lemon mint, sedum, daffodils and other flowers we’ve had for years that I don’t know their names. We love plants and gardening. Incidentally we have multiple bird feeding stations for he birds but other creatures use it also. And......we have bird house, bat houses and a special structure for the bees. I guess I just love nature.

I bought that spiller plant this year.. I couldn't believe how fast it grows. I bought 2 tiny plants from lowes. They were only about 2 inches wide and long. But I noticed they were trying to root out on the tiny shoots so I took those and cut off 1 piece that had roots on it and turned 2 tiny plants into 4 very tiny plants But it's only been 2 weeks and they all have excellent root systems on them and the longers is at least 8 inches long and as wide as my hand with fingers spread. But I did buy a different kind of potting soil this year. Its called " BACTO ". .. Everything I have planted in that potting soil has blown my mind.. It is pricey at 15.oo a bag but it is worth every dime.

I have a large number of indoor plants all around a south window-doors and I really like the snake plants, aka mother-in-law tongue. They are easy to start on your own and propagate. I just put 3 leaves in water until they grew roots and transplanted them into a vase and then a larger planter because they grow so fast! They are really fun because they get so tall; mine are about 5 ft. tall!

Right now the only thing coming along is my roses. They bloom from spring to fall. I have seeds to put in but haven't been able to get to it. Partly due to out of the ordinary weather conditions (rain, cold, snow, you name it) and partly due to a whole house clean, and downsize. I may end up holding off until fall.

I have way too many things to list growing in containers of all size all around my house outside. I've learned to pay attention to my growing area as well as the difference in the sun (my house gets afternoon sun in front). And so I don't have to replace things seasonally, I concentrate on perennials. A big advantage to container gardening is that it's easy to move them.

@@lindabaker1776 very carefully. You have to take it out of the dirt and tap the dirt off the roots as much as you can and separate the roots and put it into a larger pot. Hope this helps

I live in a mobile home park and the ground is terrible! Clay, mud, no drainage. So I'm planting almost everything in containers! I "replant" celery stubs, romaine, green onions etc. Outside I have a lot of perennial herbs in pots rosemary, oregano, thyme(s, different kinds, lemon, English etc.), Sage, strawberries. Some huge planters I have a few kinds of hydrangeas, reblooming sonic weigela, Rhododendron, several colors of dianthus. Garlic, garlic chives, regular chives in raised beds. This year I am growing more foods& have been "schooling myself on what can grow in containers, I'm trying red, russet, Yukon potatoes, yams, in hanging baskets I'm going to try peas, cherry tomatoes, lettuces, spinach and swiss chard. In other containers im trying beets, turnips, carrots, onions. I'm also going to bury water bottles with holes poked in the bottom and fill those with water so they will gradually "take" the water they need. Hopefully save a lot of water this way! I live in Ohio so our last frost date is May 15th! Also trying to find flowers that are edible, so they'll also be functional!

I have many plants in pots that I keep in the house, I also currently have bell peppers-red, green, yellow and orange inside in large pots. When they get a bit bigger and the weather gets a bit more stable I will move them outside but still keep them in the pots. We have a lot of voles that love to eat our produce. So we have planted tomatoes and potatoes in pots as well. So keep on trying. It is really nice to be able to bring your planters inside in the fall to prolong the season a bit.
