I go to the chippy after my first coat. Timing, lighting and a good eye is key to plastering. And timing changes according to the background you’re skimming on. Best tip I can suggest is kill suction on the background as much as you can with a couple of coats of decent PVA, this will get you the most natural setting time, make your second coat a little thinner than the first. Always flatten off each coat and let the plaster pull in, don’t play around with it. And most of all don’t use too much water when trowelling up. I just wet my brush, wipe the trowel and splash a bit on the wall. Don’t forget to hard wet trowel it for that smooth finish once it’s completely set. Huge fan of yours, been watching your vids since the beginning. Have massive respect for you dude. I’m a plasterer by trade, but tend to do full house renovations. Usually on my own, like you.
Hi Best tip I got was around doing the wet trowel. Once flattened your second coat and you go to do your wet trowel. If you use the water brush and it is leaving brush marks, then you are putting the water on too early. Wait a little longer. Always flatten as much as you can as you go along.
Great to have you back Rodian. Have missed the videos. Would love a plastering tutorial vid. Was the only trade my late Dad never managed to teach me! 👍🏼
Been looking forward to this one 😉. Great to see some plaster going on , beautifully I have to say 👌🏼. Hope future Rodian and Hollie are doing ok 🤜🏻🤛🏻🧱👍🏼😁
A tip I was taught after years of getting it wrong was to mix at a low speed and large paddle … the problem with drills is the speed is so high and sometimes not adjustable. Not a problem for little jobs but really helps you on a large ceiling
Scrim up mate or you will have screw pops and cracks. I only used to do corners, angles and joins. Now I do every screw after a nightmare on a loft extension we did where the timber was so wet it popped loads of them and I was forever making good. Good vid though, hope Holly is doing ok and keep up the good work on the house!
Mate you should have Skrim taped all the joints around the top where wall meets ceiling as well! And in the dormer as well! Also we do bathrooms and kitchens all the time it’s our thing, green plasterboard is no good in bathrooms , the British standard is now to have tile backer boards installed instead of plasterboard especially in a wet area like a shower! Skill builder does a great bathroom install on you tube and shows how it should be done
How did you break your arm, it wasn’t from that hop up you were using in the vid? 😀 When your back fighting fit could you do a tutorial on how you get the plaster from the hawk to the towel, how you take small bits off using either side of the towel and your preferred ratio of water and plaster mix. I know it is on the bag, however is it right for all applications? Look forward to seeing them and you back in action doing what you do best.
Blessings to your arm there Brother 🙏 I would love to see more plastering from you ! If you could explain it really well for us guys in the States. I would give anything to buy that product you all use there. It may be available somewhere in the States but not in my area. I am absolutely fascinated by that magic brown powder you have there in that sack. I am so in love with it I would probably not even paint it. Love the color just as it is. Cheers !
I used to labour for a plastering team back in the early 2000’s, the hardest thing for me was getting the plaster consistency right, I used to get so much abuse I could never get it right. Everything else wasn’t a problem
Have more brews lol secret to the game. As for a tip on timings for a diyer just make sure every coat is flattened down so if if you are a little slow you shouldn’t have too many problems.
Count me in for some plastering tutes. ALSO: could you do some videos relating to different methods of soundproofing? For example I intend to not only soundproof for my home studio, but also do a party wall soundproof - and this in itself seems to be where say 5 different people will give you 5 different methods. Cheers laaaaaarrrrr.
I've tried to plaster I can but find it easier to pay someone. He does something similar to your hack. He doesn't drink hot drinks he has a smoke his second coat is awesome as he he is all relaxed 🙂
You are a dab hand with the plastering and some videos would be great as you are a great teacher. Hope the arm is recovering. Look after Holly. Best wishes
Dear Rodian, please to find you plastering and yes I like to see plastering tips. When I first heard of your wife illness I prayer strongly to God for you both that God would strengthen and heal. .Bernard. ex bricklayer
In my opinion if the customer makes that tea/coffee the bill does slightly decrease or the contractor goes that little bit further to make sure the job goes well.. hint there for you consumers..
Good to see you back on the channel Rodian. Great to see you back on the trowel mate . 👍🏻 What happened to your arm? Hope you and Hollie are doing ok? Great to see ya Adam and Aimee Xx
That explains why tea is always being drunk on building sites. Yes please, a plastering video(s). Hope that arm gets better soon - you'll have to tell us how you broke it (assuming it was).
My tip is get the other wall on while you wait for the first coat to go off then jump back on for the second coat when dry enough ( and leave them cats alone )
as far as i'm aware theres a couple of reasons, before fibre mesh scrim we had hessian tape (which some plasterers still use when jointing a ceiling to hardwall plaster) which is stupidly thick almost like a bandage you'd never cover it in one coat, the second reason is to cover any imperfections in the first coat and to give that plaster shine, the way i think of it is your first coat gives you the required thickness and the second being the skin you make look pretty with your burnishing and polishing
hope you're ok soon not like me i did so much damage to to wright shoulder that i can lift it any higher than my ear after 19 months damned hard to lay bricks have to learn to use my left
Hello sir, Idk if Hollie is still keeping up with her YT channel / comments but if she has a minute to spare I posted a comment on her video I would really like her to read. About an underrepresented therapy that cures cancer almost 100% success rate and is cheap, safe, effective. No I am not a quack and not selling anything. I have no skin in the game, I just like to pass this along whenever I hear of anyone with cancer. All the very best to you and your amazing , courageous wife.
