A pointed tweezers is more valuable and more versatile regarding bushcraft uses. A pointed tweezers gives you considerable advantages for removing ticks or thorns and splinters. In this video I will show you how you can modify your tweezers with simple tools.

Forty years ago, my work mate ended up with a tiny chard of metal in his eye. We were outdoors in minus 40C temp. I used the flat tweezers and glass to pull this tiny piece of metal before it does damage and the eye freezes. Worked a treat and it saved my mate's eye. As the flat tweezer needed a left hand, it was better than a pointed tweezer. Do not assume one is better than the other. I still have my Victorinox Champ. Its like an old friend after 45 years.

Drop a sewing needle in the tweezer slot befor replacing the tweezers. Then when you need to dig out a splinter remove the tweezers and dump out the needle. Now you have a dedicated needle for removing splinters that you don't have to worry about heating and taking the temper out of. I keep another sewing needle wrapped with dental floss under the parcel hook.

Many have the pin in the place by the corkscrew, or you can put a needle and thread under the saw per his other videos.

Why don´t you put a pin in the slot under corkscrew/philips screwdriver. I use it all the time.

Hey Felix, Love your videos. I found another use for tweezers tonight. My wife locked the keys in the house. I have the Swiss champ. I cut one side off the tweezers with the pliers wire cutters, then I used the pliers to put a bend in that piece of the tweezers to make a tension wrench. The other side of the tweezers with the top plastic piece attached, I used to actually pick the lock. It will cost me $6 to buy 6 replacement tweezers instead of $80-$100 for a locksmith.

You can further modify the tips by folder a piece of very fine (600 grit-800 grit) emery cloth or wet/dry sandpaper in half. Pinch the emery cloth or sandpaper between the tips and sand them to a precision tip. Go side to side with the tweezers to create micro serrated tips that will grip a lot better. Be careful that you don’t thin the tips very much. You only want to create an even mating of the tips and very fine scratches across the inside of the tips.

Thanks a lot for this modification. As still suffering myself after Lyme Disease from a tick 12 years ago (and several following Lyme Diseases, too) I cannot emphasize enough how live saving the correct elimination of ticks is!!! I will try to find someone with grinding tools to make this modification myself for all of my SAK tweezers. Until then I will try to lay such a wire like a needle threader under the saw.... My best professional tick remover (stored in my wallet) is looking exactly like a metal needle threader. Only have to pull the wire outside of the handle and store this part in my SAK.

Ticks carry Lyme disease, plague, and spotted fever. Mosquitoes are a greater threat where I live (malaria, dengue fever, Zika, yellow fever, West Nile virus, etc.), but I don’t know if they have the mosquito-born diseases in Switzerland. The climate there is much colder than ours.

Everybody out there, please believe him! I live in Austria and my life is ruined since Lyme Disease 12 years ago, despite 6 weeks of antibiotics very soon after the typical red rash! It very often causes continued sickness and I have developed a condition similar to Long Covid (called ME/CFS), since those initial months of disease. No way of doing a normal amount of things, only appr. 40%. E.g. carving only a little is too exhausting for me and can cause several days in bed. By the way, I removed the causal tick within appr. 4-6 hours!

My grandmother used to have a farm when I was a kid growing up in Texas. We would get ticks on us a lot up there. Her method of removal was to hold a lit match to the tick until it backed its head out and then snatch it up with a Kleenex and burn the whole package with the match.
@censusgary
@censusgary 4 года назад
I remember people doing that (I’m from Texas, too), but using tweezers to remove the tick by the mouth is said to result in less transfer of infectious material into the wound. Whatever you do, don’t squeeze the tick’s abdomen- then it will empty itself into the bite in your skin.

great hack ! however in my experience it is easier to remove a tick by using alcohol on the spot ,the tick will retract itslegs and will be easy to remove.

Funny enough, I always removed the Scheiß Zecke with the Vic tweezers for years, but without mods. The tweezers have enough room in between to not squeeze the scheiß Zecke, but enough bite to remove it without any hassle. It’s already perfect as it is.

Haaa ha haaa, ja die fucking ticks. Wenn's bei Dir mit der Pinzette passt, dann ist ja super. Vielleicht habe wir die etwas Fetteren :-D

Do you think the same quality could be achieved by grinding with a dremel by hand?

Because time does not matter, you will also achieve a great result.. even without bench grinder.

Hello Nikos. I don't have any experience with this V-Tools ...but your idea is great!

Where I live in the US ticks are very common. You can find something in the stores here called a "tick puller tool". There are pictures online. You might look at those for ideas on how to use your scissors for that purpose.

That will work, but since the scissors are sharp be careful you don't cut the head off of the tick and leave it imbedded in you!
