In today's furniture makeover, I DIY DUPE these facebook marketplace nightstands to look like something from Pottery Barn! To do this I used this faux wood technique with Rustoleum glaze!
As always, if you like this type of content please make sure you like this video and subscribe as it really helps my channel grow!
When uploading I had no idea who the original creator of this faux wood look design was as it's now highly saturated across most platforms but thanks to you amazing viewers I now know! The original creator is ‪@blacksheephouse‬ . Make sure to check her channel out for more videos on this technique & thanks to everyone who has brought light to the original creator so I can give credit!

Gawd there's some truly AWFUL people in the comments here telling this poor girl what to do and trying to make her feel bad for not crediting the "original inventor" - let me tell you something... This finish has been around decades but went out of fashion... And once you put it in the world wide web, you can be sure people will copy it, because they like it... Its a compliment, there's thousands of videos here doing the same thing, but for some reason certain "influences" end up with a kind of cult full of bullies who actively go out looking to tear someone down. Anyway, I LOVE THE DRAWS, im insanely jealous we don't get big furniture pieces like that where i live and I would love them! Keep up the good work!

You really should clean your pieces before you sand because if you wait until after you sand you will be sanding any dirt and grim into the surface. I know you need to wipe it down again after sanding but it could really make a difference to your paint lasting and adhering.

Hand brushing works in this technique because any paint strike ridges left will blend in with the streaks. If you're serious about refinishing, reconsider about using a sprayer. There are small tents you can set up outside to spray and tbe finish is more professional.

Those you would want to go up and down with the grain. And yes, I think when you are putting on the paint it would look better to go one direction also. Please don't look at this as a negative as it is just advice is all. Love the color... keep up the great work!!!

I like the paint color you used. I tried black sheep’s exact base paint color & exact technique. The latex paint was coming up from the small yellow broom bristles even after several days of curing. parts turned out good but I learned that if the wood has blemishes (a weird veneer issue), the glaze picked up these blemishes & I lost the striated grain affect in this damaged area which looked like a blob shadow that wasn’t apparent after the Zinzer block out was applied. I have since repainted this piece (large Hepplewhite buffet cabinet) in a mineral paint which fixed the problem but now I’m hesitant & hubs not liking this affect since I have some carvings & such & doesn’t think this will work with all the carved finishes. But I truly like how yours turned out & applause you. Do you mind sharing what base paint color you used? I like it & like your channel & of course I subscribed!
@HeatherLewisss
@HeatherLewisss 10 месяцев назад
I’ve never tried the same base color as hers before, but I recommend always priming with a good primer if you aren’t familiar with how well the paint does. Thank you so much for the support. I used Oattbran by valspar as my base and then rustoleum decorative glaze

What does offloading bristles mean? And how do you fix if a piece comes out too dark? THANK YOU
@HeatherLewisss
@HeatherLewisss Год назад
Offloading the bristles means just taking paper towel or something and dabbing all the excess off before you swipe it across the surface so that it doesn’t become too dark. Because you can always go darker but you can’t go lighter without starting over! Thank you for watching and supporting!

Fantastic work! Please do not pay any mind to any “haters” ranting over who you should or should not credit. I guess Pottery Barn should be getting most of the credit here, lol - or the Chinese or whomever sprays the finish for PB. I did faux (wall) finishes 25 years ago but in no way did I “invent” it. I watch lots of videos from many RU-vidrs and appreciate all.

@@WatchTashi Who exactly is the OG of this faux finish? Certainly not Pottery Barn. Should she give a shout out to the renaissance? Does it really matter? Does every word you’ve ever said your original word? Every thought you’ve had an original thought? Nope. When it comes down to it, every person plagiarizes every day and “copies” someone else’s ideas - often changes it up a bit to suit themselves. There hasn’t been an original thought in decades. I can understand your frustration for sure! I had only seen this technique on Instagram as I stated in the video. And it is highly saturated on that platform. I had no idea who the original creator was until I published this video and got that feedback. I’ll make sure to give credit to her channel in my description box. Thank you for being part of the group who brings the original creator to light.

Highly doubt Black Sheep created this look! My father in law was doing faux wood looks with glazes 50 years ago!

Black Sheep House, whom I respect and follow, was not the "creator" of The faux wood glazing technique! My grandmother consistently used this technique over 60 years ago. She freshened up some beautiful pieces. The technique has been around a long long time...before Black Sheep House was born, Lol.

Great video, I just have one question. Why do you end every sentence like a question lol? You go up at the end everytime. I know it’s silly but at the end that’s all I could concentrate on. 😂. I’m sure you don’t even realize you do it, it’s just one of those things I notice. The nightstands look great!!

I wish you trolls would just find something constructive to do. This like so many diy videos comes from showing their subscribers how to do something and in many cases introducing it to some for the first time. I’m sure Black sheep house has credited everything on their channel to an original creator???? At least if you are going to slam someone and just be nasty have your facts straight and if you are so annoyed then choose to watch creators that cater to only you and your requirements… so I guess that would be you…create your own content, I bet you will love your trolls

I have bleed thru on a piece I’m doing now. Best way to quickly deal with it is to hit the area with some shellac. I keep a spray can handy just in case. Another tip grab a couple of furniture dollies -the flat kind with 4 wheels. Makes moving the pieces around so much easier (i like keeping them in the best light) 😉
@karenmitchell6814

If you have a harbor freight near you, those dollies can be bought for ~$7? So much easier & safer than dragging on concrete.

I have seen this technique on youtube before. Typically they use deck stain brushes for detail areas. The broom head is good for large surfaces like table tops. Search pottery barn finish for users doing this technique so you can find the tools they use. Good for you for trying something new, looks good :)

@@HeatherLewisss There were too many surfaces for the technique. Try again on a more simple style. The glaze lines will be better.

I have a client that has a huge office in their home, with two walk to wall built ins and a huge desk! I’ve done this process on several pieces of furniture but I’m afraid it’ll be just too much on everything in their office… meaning… it’s going to be impossible to get a perfect consistency and may look “messy” thoughts?

They turned out beautifully. I will definitely try this technique. Thank you so much. If you wanted a piece a little darker, would you suggest going over it with the glaze a second time, or use a darker colour underneath?

I'm sorry for all the comments about the "original creator", as if every other technique out there that catches on and gets very popular has everyone keeping a tally of all the original creators and makes sure to mention them at the beginning of each of their videos. 🙄 But you certainly have been very gracious in your responses. Anyway, I enjoyed the video and don't care if you explained or showed cleaning the pieces before sanding, whether you use a brush or roller or why you didn't just spray paint instead, nor do I mind what primer you used. I watch tons of these types of videos, mainly to see the befores and afters, but also to see what techniques and things people use - out of curiosity, not to nitpick the details! I really liked seeing how you did these pieces and they turned out beautiful!!! Great job, keep up the good work 👍 👍

Beautifully done!❤ I wonder if this technique could be used as dry brush in opposite direction - to stain furniture first with dark stain and then swipe it with white?🤔

Why couldn't you use Bullseye polyacrylic spray all over the piece to prevent bleed through? It's much faster too.

Not gonna lie, I was dubious at first. I am not normally one of those who begs people not to paint over the wood grain but I thought the pattern on the top was pretty, just needed lightening. And I was worried about you painting over the caning, too. BUT THESE ARE GORGEOUS! So fresh, modern, and elegant. Great work, kid! 😉. I subscribed to see more surprises!
