I have been researching this look for awhile, so I am really glad you showed how to accomplish it. So many variations are possible! Most of the wood in my home is some other wood than oak, but I'm really wanting to give this a try. A thrift store trip may be in order!

this is beautiful. i'm sure it would be very difficult with paneled doors on a piece. how does this process work on maple or other woods?
@BellaRenovare

It’s not hard on panels you will just need a smaller brush. It is the same technique with other woods you just want to make sure you are getting into the wood grain to deepen it

This is beautiful ❤️ But how do we figure out what the different woods are?
@BellaRenovare
@BellaRenovare 3 года назад
Honestly it depends, so if you buy it from someone you can ask, you will have research online and look up your pieces and different woods, I will do a video in the future of how to tell but in reality MOST furniture is only made with a handful of woods, so chances are your furniture is probably one of the following, mahogany, oak, pine, cherry or maple (obviously there are specialized woods for furniture but your best bet is to ask the store or person you get the piece from) sometimessss the BACK of the pieces will actual have a stamp that tells you what wood it is as well :)

You would be suprised how many finishes are ceruse finishes. Anytime the grain is lighter in color, its a ceruse. Im currently custom matching a wood floor, and its taking a bit of extra work matching its ceruse finish. But im a bit green on finishing wood and eager to master it! I just nailed the color of the stain using mixol pigments, i have my samples sealed in poly, and im about to go mix up some glazes to get the color of the grain fill. Im using only mixol pigments for color, making my own stain with 99% isopropyl and water. Im using minwax polycrylic (water based polyurethane), i mix it 50/50 with water for my seal coat. And im using sherwin williams faux impressions glaze as a base for my grain fill, mixed with mixol for color. Tools im using to get it done are a festool rotex 150mm, basically a belt sander and random orbit in 1 tool. And a restorer tool to quickly and evenly expose the grain with a wire wheel. My restorer is from rockler woodworking, but craftsman and black and decker make one. Happy trails!

Try stripping and sanding it all the way down, if it still looks red you can use a two part wood bleach to lighten it. I do it like this : paint in white, take the Spatel and scrap the wet paint from the wood (go with the Grain) the paint stays in the deeper lines .Voila done ! I’ve always played around with painting my own furniture over the years and recently people have been asking me to paint their pieces. Do you have any tips for how to charge? Because of the variables of not knowing how long something will take (at times, issues arise during the process as you know, or different sized pieces taking longer) I don’t know how to estimate well and I don’t know whether to do an hourly rate or a per piece rate. Thus far my friends have been getting a steal of a deal I’m afraid. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Tools, for your consideration. And my process (so far) Probably the best tool for this would be a restorer tool. I went with one from rockler woodworking, but craftsman and black and decker make them too! I use mine to remove finish before sanding with the paint removal drum, i also use it with the wire wheel to expose grain nice and evenly in a quick fashion. 1-2 passes seems to do it! Festool Rotex 150. I put this one second due to cost, but it replaces a belt sander and is also a random orbit. I dont drop below 120 grit. I use the rotex mode @ 120 grit after the paint removal head. Then after exposing the grain i switch to random orbit for 120 then 180. My process so far. (Still learning) 1. Remove finish 2. Rotex/ belt sand up to 120 grit 3. Expose grain 4. finish sand for staining from 120 to 150-180 5. Expose grain again 6. Apply custom stain (mixol pigments, 99% iso, water) 7. Seal with minwax polycrylic (mixed 50/50 with water) wipe excess out of grain 8. Buff burrs with a maroon scotch brite (400grit) 9. Seal with minwax polycrylic (50/50) wipe excess out of grain 10. Buff with maroon scotch brite 11. Glaze (sherwin williams faux impressions) colored with more mixol! 12. Buff with maroon 13. Minwax polycrylic (full strength) 14. Buff with grey scotch brite 15. Minwax polycrylic (full strength) 16. Buff with grey 17. Final coat minwax polycrylic (50/50 with water) or spray Im doing all this right now, I'm custom color matching a wood floor i installed. Im making custom thresholds for their sliding glass doors.

And is an engineered wood from the family of manufactured boards which include medium-density fibreboard (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB) and particle board (chipboard). Can you apply this method? This is gorgeous! The finish fits the table so well 😍 Thank you so much for being so descriptive with each step. I'm sending your vid to my sister. She has yellow oak cabinets and this would be stunning in her kitchen!

If using this type of technique and finish on a heavily used dining table, that gets wiped off ALOT with a damp cloth, does the sealer prevent the paint from coming off? I’m always concerned about doing all the hard work just for it to be ruined by trying to keep it cleaned.

Okay, I have an oak veneer. Is that the same or does it need to be solid oak? I have a question about a piece that I’m currently working on. I’m keeping it as a work table. It is SO dry! I mean I’m afraid to sand it because it might become uneven. I’m going to start with a very fine grit and see. My question is, is there anything I can put on it before I work on it? I’m very new to furniture painting, I want to put a dark base coat then use several colors with sea spray and put light and dark colors over the colors. Amy on AJ’s channel did it. I just wonder if I should pre condition it? Would primer be enough or do you recommend something else? Thanks! 💕

Hi Crys'Dawna! When you wipe back the paint with the microfiber, is the cloth wet, or dry? I'm doing a whole set of kitchen cabinets and my first test door was pretty white all throughout. I assumed the cloth was wet, so maybe I should try again with a dry cloth? Thanks!

Love this, the table is fab! I tried this on a Drexel, oak table. Your directions are wonderful. Sadly, I had a problem with tannin bleed through. I will have to put a clear primer on first. Hope I can replicate with this caveat.

Do you think I can use this on Pottery Barn reclaimed pine tables? They originally had a similar look, but it's worn off and now more natural / yellowish pine. Three years ago I mistakingly wiped them down with an orange oil - ugh. Your table here is the look I'm going for. It's gorgeous!

What determines if you use a stripper or sand the finish off?
@BellaRenovare
@BellaRenovare 3 года назад
Ahhhh well chemical stripper always just makes it easier as a first line of defense lol….If the finish is really failing I will just sand but I really hate sanding for hours and hours so I generally always do a chemical stripper and then sand it just makes my lifer easier :)

I have a huge picnic style table with a bench and two side leafs, made in Malaysia World Market brand. It already has the deep grooves in it but the wood grain is bland. Maybe it is the ceruse technique but the ppl I got it from had it outdoors so it’s weathered (maybe I could send you a pic of the wood and give me your thoughts ☺️) I’d like to redo it but just not sure were to start. I’m still new at this but your video gave me a great outlook on what to with the table. Thank you so much. I always learn so much from you. Your table is gorgeous 🥰

I’ve watched this video several times and I’m ready to do my 2 open shelving (oak) but have this quick question. Do I need to worry about tannins ? The shelves are raw oak so the stripping and mineral sprit wash I can skip.

What type of sander do you have (Brand name), I need woodworking tools What brands and type do you think I need starting out on stocking my official furniture woodworking shop ,I've been doing everything by hand for years and I do have experience with tools I did construction with my dad my entire life but for the 1st time creating a actual workshop for myself with my husband pushing me that I need one and do have a talent for furniture and design and he's asking me what tools I need to get this started and I know construction tools but I don't know what the options are for furniture woodworking and maybe u will know of something that is a better fit for my needs! Thanks 😊

I just saw a video of a woodworker that added a dark almost black glaze over the whitewash . It was quite interesting. Might be fun to do this ceruse technique with different colors and glazes . Also comparing other types of wood would be good. Just a thought .

@BellaRenovare cool! I am up north in the woods. Very rural. Love it! I hope you enjoy maine and definitely get out to explore. The coast, the mountains and the lakes are all top notch and why we live here. Up north here isn't for everyone but if you're a country bumpkin like me it's great! Haven't been to Portland in a while but I used to love the Old Port. Have a great day! Merry Christmas!

I have no access to the wax that you use, is there any recommendation for other brand. You spark any ideas to do with an oak kitchen table we just bought from a thrift store. Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us. I am always looking for inspiration and this is one of the best tutorial I have seen here.

Just came across your video and I’m hoping you could share where you purchased your chemical stripper from. I’ve used so many that hasn’t worked for me. Your stripper seemed to work really well for your furniture.

Hi. I am stripping an old oak table and plan to ceruse it as you've explained here. There is a dark green edge and green in the wood that I can't get out. I'm actually thinking it was cerused with wax (not sure). My questions are: will the technique work if I can't get the green out and how can I get the green out of the wood grain and off the trim? Stripping doesn't really affect it. Actually, another question I have is after ceruseing the table with white paint will anyone ever be able to get it out again? I love this look and I do want to do it but I don't want to ruin this table for the future.
