FANTASTIC knife! I believe you used at least two compounds to polish the handle in the end, but when you applied one of them it darkened the wood a lot more, which is how I want my knives to look like as well. could you please tell me what compound you applied? Great idea to use a bolt at the end of the scale btw ;)

true craftsmanship? I'm sorry but all he did was grind a bit of metal into the shape of a knife. the handle was nice I guess but that's the only real craftsmanship in this video. if he forge welded the steel himself and hand pounded it into shape etc that would be true craftsmanship.

Hint: Don't make the angles b/w the blade and the tang 90 degrees. While this greatly simplifies fitting the brass guard, it also creates a weak point, from which the blade will break off the tang/handle when lateral force is applied. Also, if you want a really tight fit, you have to hammer the guard into place with a semi-flattened metal pipe (or sth.). If the guard slides freely all the way, the fit is not tight.

nice job!!!!But why dont you buy anealed steel and harden,teperit by yourself?????
@christopherbackus5578
@christopherbackus5578 7 лет назад
It's easier to buy steel that had already been tempered to the hardness you want, than it is to achieve proper hardness by heat treating yourself. Unless you already have a temperature controlled heat treating furnace. You just need to be careful to not damage the heat treat when grinding the blade to shape. (notice how he applied water to the blade portion while he was cutting it out with the angle grinder...the tang doesn't need to be hard, so he didn't bother cooling it.)
@phirunseng1097

Varnish for water proofing. Otherwise the wood would rot when you wash it.

I think its some type of acid (ive seen people use vinegar) used to give the blade a patina coating (blacken the blade).

Whoops misread blade for handle because that was the last soaking I saw. It's a cold blue solution to prevent the blade from rusting, but mostly because black blades are cool. Probably.
