In a cooler climate this greenhouse allows growers to extend their outdoor growing season by several months! In the past, I would have to wait til last frost in May to grow outside and plants died by early October. After making thisI was able to start seedlings in the greenhouse in March, with the extra warmth & protection that the greenhouse provides made the plants grow stronger, healthier and more bountiful for transplant earlier, and I was able to start another cycle of cool weather crops in September and harvest in late November, I have even grown herbs & lettuces over the snowy winters!

That looks great. Just as an aside, I was living temporarily in a 100-year-old farmhouse. I noticed that the compost pile was very warm and winter was coming. I dug into the pile, arched some PVC pipe, covered it with a heavy plastic and covered the edges with compost. It was only 1.5 tall. I planted my salad greens; we had 2 feet of snow and it formed an icecap atop the arch, probably due to the heat radiating from the compost pile. We had the best, crisp, bug free salads all winter. It was my poor man's greenhouse. Someday, I will have a greenhouse like yours.

That's an old standard - use either manure or compost as a base to make a 'hothouse'! You can also do a simple box frame (any size) plus windowpane hinged and set at an angle, and tap that decomposing heat for growing winter veg

We used to build greenhouse with just PVC and plastic sheets about 4-5 tall. When it got warm enough in Spring we just undid the tie downs and picked it up and moved it. Your's is much nicer.
@crossgrainwoodproductsltd9230
Yes, every year while prepping a site for the cold frame, (I move it every fall to a sunny area that has fresh compost), I dig a 1-1/2' hole and add 1 month-old manure for the first 1/2', (the manure I use is left outside that first month. I find it helps to rinse the strong urea out). I then put a layer of fresh grass clippings, shredded leaves, veggie scraps chopped fine, and small twigs that are all mixed for the next 1/2', and finally the remaining 1/2' is well-composted soil. The cold frame is set over that area. I use a few straw bales around the back and two sides and another 1/2 bale halves again against the front. I have used natural twine, or vines to tie the bales against the cold frame, but in the last few years, I just drive in long branches in front of the straw bales. The manure and shredded items start working right away and generate a lot of heat inside that space. I plant salad greens, spinach, and arugula and within a week, they start popping up. I keep a thermometer in the cold frame because I do not want to fry the seedlings. It stays about 70 during the day and only dips to about 55-60 at night. As an alternative to manure for heat, I have also taken liter and 1/2 gallon bottles that are painted black, fill them with water, and placed them in the side along the back. They absorb the sun's heat during the day and release it at night. I only use this method in the spring when temps are consistently above freezing and the heat from the manure is not as strong. Also, during a sunny day, condensation tends to build up on the glass and drips to the soil. You still need to supplement with weekly watering only early during a bright sunny day. You want to make sure that it is well absorbed. A great alternative to a greenhouse.

I would add some plastic to cover the wood along the bottom so when you roll up your sides that wood has some water resistance during rains. Keep it from rotting or getting moldy. A worthwhile little upgrade.

You are without a doubt the King of Toe Nailing. Never seen so many. I love the build, the design is very cool. That white tape is going to come loose in a year. The rubber is a great idea, but staples look just fine. Brilliant idea leaving the plastic overhanging the window.

The only change i will make when I build mine is to use the rebar that is already extending a foot from ground along my raised bed edges to sink the pvc over for increased stability. Could sink each one into a concrete footer if starting from scratch. I already use this concept for existing garden structures. Thank you for this great video

When building projects such as your greenhouse or mobile chicken coops , I use 2" X 3" rather than 2"X 4". It saves money as well as weight if you ever need to move it. I have found that for structures such as these that the 2" X 3" is quite strong enough.

Great tunnel house and pleased to see you are taking care of any metal that may come in contact with the film. Also any metal touching film will cause hot spots and these are the points the film will be damaged -heat and/or abrasion. that type of pvc will break down in time from the sun, schedule 40 (power conduit) would be a better and stronger choice. Also I would really recommend digging around the foundation 2 ft and putting foam board 2 ft down or below the frost line
@LivingTheGoodLife
@LivingTheGoodLife Год назад
I used schedule 40, if you scroll down description you’ll see materials list… I have had those same PVC pipes outdoors in the sun for 7 years with no issues. The foam or other waterproof membrane would be nice to help slow wood rot
@DeminicusSCA
@DeminicusSCA Год назад
the PVC in the sun will last many many years that is not the issue. PVC will destroy your expensive greenhouse plastic. I have seen it year after year , where the PVC touches the sheeting , the chlorine that is released from the pvc in sunlight will eat the plastic. your 4 year plastic will split along the pvc pipe after only a year . you ether have to sheath the PVC in poly pipe or dont use PVC. do a google search and read all about it , "pvc contact green house plastic"
@LivingTheGoodLife

@@DeminicusSCA the piping I used has not caused any damage to the greenhouse sheeting even after many years, the only markings are a thin line of slight opaqueness from wind rub.

One thought here maybe next time grab a piece of pex pipe and bury it under the greenhouse and come up in a corner and make a water hose bib for your plants. Trench to house and tie to your hose bib. Then at end of the year before snow comes or freezing temps just take off of house bib and blow it out with an air compressor and have it ready to go for the next year. Looks like a nice greenhouse hope it lasts for many years for you.

One of the best tutorial for greenhouse and a great greenhouse, i have to say. Look very nice and sturdy. Just one question. Why didn't u put the midlle horizontal boards on the sides on the outside of pipes? This way you could fix plastic to that board and roll it up in the summer up to this board and you wouldn't have to secure all the screws with tapes also, because they would be on the inside of greenhouse.

Yes having worked at home depot not all cuts are exactly what is stated. A 4x6x 8 ft often is 7ft 11"inch's and a 1/4". Or over 8ft. It goes with most cuts. If you measure before you buy. It helps

This is awesome, one thing - I wouldn't use pressure treated wood in a garden because the chemical process that preserves the wood can leech heavy metals into soil over time. I'm going to make one of these this year!

and pressure treated rots just as the same, Ive used pressure treated outdoors before and its hardly noticeable. Burning wood on the other hand has lasted me decades!

Thank you… the plastic sheeting that they sent me was absolute garbage, broke down in just over a year. While the plastic I got offline is still going strong. I’m working on a review video now. Subscribe to updated.

Nice job, it's on my '23 project list. Just curious what gardening zone you're in. I'm in 5 and wondering about the ground heaving during our very cold winters and messing up the concrete block foundation. We're under snow from Nov - Feb, so the ground freezes solid. Thanks!

When you showed rainfall at the end of the video, my first thought is that I would keep a folding chair out there and read or crochet when raining, or any sunny winter day! So relaxing, bright and peaceful! Well done! Thank you all for going to the trouble to film it all for us and point out all the tips and tricks! Yahweh Almighty bless, protect and prosper you!
