Reflow can be tricky, but having the right tool for the job is always the first step. The PCBA preheater didn’t work well, let’s try a hot plate! This 850W 200X200mm hot plate got the job done... though it did smoke a little.

In my humble opinion the whole thing is designed pretty well (ignoring grounding issues which is common for all chinese things), the high heat capacity of the top plate and just putting a prebuilt PID temperature controller is great compared to what those chinese engineers would cook up

most people would spend 2 seconds of the video on this safety bs. you may be an engineer but you're a broke one lol. I don't mean to hate but I'm here to see your work and how you made a pcb. this is the 4th video I've watched where you natter on about grounding.

@@jstro-hobbytech I completely disagree. I'm a student studying electrical engineering, looking at getting a hot plate. The reason I clicked this video was to evaluate this product for safety and grounding concerns since I haven't done much work with unsafe voltages.

Measured surface temperature uniformity with a non-contact IR thermometer would be nice to know. The low emissivity of the shiny surface would give an inaccurate reading, but the uniformity is what we'd be looking for.

Very interesting idea Winston! I have a dev kit somewhere for a low-res non-contact IR thermometer (something like 64x64 pixels) Probably good enough to evaluate something like this! I'll try to dig it out of storage and hook that into a future video!

Wow! Better heating performance than the last one, but the worse grounding out of the box is a concern. Did you keep this one?

Why do they make those temperature regulators so large? I have dual display one (w1219?) that is just a small PCB with 120/12V.

I'm not sure, Bob! I've seen similar controllers before, but for being a simple relay power output.. it does seem a bit big.

If you really need a reliable solution with curves there is a module that you can use to mod a regular oven into a reflow oven

Hi Alex! Great idea, I've heard of these modules... I figure this hot plate setup could naturally provide more even heating than a toaster oven - given the giant metal plate. Maybe I'm wrong, but using one of those controllers (to add temperature profiles) with this could be a winning combination!
