While this video is helpful and awesome, their "FREE Diagnostic" is the tip of a very large iceberg. I had two hard drives go through a power surge and end up dead. I ordered a pcb and tried to fix it by switching the ROM as described in this video. I got the drive to spin up again, but it never was recognized by my computer. Then I sent my drives to Donor Drives for diagnostics. The process was great... Until I received a quote. My 150GB WD Raptor was $1,495 and my 1TB WD drive was $2,094. Also worth mentioning is the pcb I purchased from them was not going to be refunded or used towards the quote price. I would guess large businesses might pay these kind of ransom prices, but individuals (like the ones watching this video) most likely won't be able to afford them. I hope this heads up saves someone the hassle of shipping them to Donor Drives only to find out they can't afford the repair.

+Brandon Balentine you might as well get refurbished drives that are cheap on newegg. You save on money if you get a good one, and I havent picked up a DOA one yet after a half a dozen times. If they do fail, you can return them and after years the repairs can be risked if you go for a self done bios swap because the drive was cheap to start with.
@supergeekjay
@supergeekjay 8 лет назад
+Brandon Balentine If you'd had data backups in the first place you wouldn't have even needed data recovery. Too many people blame the data recovery companies' costs when in fact it's their stupid fault for not backing up, and/or researching what backing up is if they don't know. What I do, when I buy one drive, I buy another to back it up to frequently, and then another to back that one up to 6 months later. It's still cheaper than recovery services even buying multiple drives. $2,904 will get you a TON of 150GB drives!
@donordrivesllc3640
@donordrivesllc3640 8 лет назад
+Brandon Balentine We issue refunds on PCBs within 30 days after purchase, unless ROM was modified. If you got a 2k quote for service, means there is definitely mechanical damage as well as platter damage, which isn't exactly a "repairable" issue, and by many recovery companies - "not recoverable".

That's great and all should do that but what happens when the data drive craps out and the back up drive running RAID or some sort of back up software gets corrupted to the point that you lose all that back up data? I know plenty of those exact scenarios including where the second back up was only two weeks old but the data was not there that was needed because of those two weeks. Shit happens. Lesson in all this is you can never have too many backups and make sure to keep at least two copies off site because, theft, fires, floods, life happens.

Thanks Bud. Broke the SATA connector on a 4TB drive over a year. Needed another drive to do 3rd level Backup of my Development files on my NAS. Bought a replacement PCB for the driv; but it did not work. I had an idea what was wrong but your vid confirmed it so exchanged the flash IC and all is good. Now I have another live backup of my precious development files. Thank you for the time and effort it took to produce this video. ;)

I had 4 Seagate "Desktop HDD" drives in a RAID and lightning strike blew all 4 of them up. Shame, they had been running 24/7 for about 3 years without issue.. Fortunately I bought 5 at the same time and I took the PCB off the unused one and so far it looks like it works. I'll buy 5 new drives and copy them one by one .. and have a spare of the new drives as well.

Really helpful vid, ive swapped the pcb on an old fried WD hdd , (says dec 1999 ) now it does spin up unlike before with the pcb replaced but it doesnt show up on pc, just wondered if such an old drive would have the rom chip embedded in another chip as i cant see an 8 pin rom chip on the board, i can see 2 similar chips but theyre only 3 pins on each and labeled as u6 & u7, does this require adaptation?

I followed this procedure to fix my Hitachi 2TB HD. First I did not buy a heat soldering tool I used my heat gun to swap the bios chip from the original to the donor board. Yes I could not access the partition on the drive after doing this so thinking outside the box I used partition magic to shrink the volume to a more manageable size of 460gb as only 450gb was used. I then used partition magic to copy that partition onto a different 500gb laptop hd I had. I came back in the morning and all of my data was saved and accessible on the laptop hd. Total cost $40 for the donor drive.

Thank you. This presentation is very clear and useful. I have SATA wd800 caviar se (category 2) with a bad PCB board.and I have a duplicate replacement PCB board. so I am thinking (fearing) of moving and soldering the old Rom chip to the new replacement board. I was hoping for a software solution. Is there any app out there that can read and reflash the Rom information? The keyboard seems like a saver tool to me.
@donordrivescom
@donordrivescom 10 лет назад
The software version does exist, but generally costs several thousands of dollars. If your original PCB is truly bad, then the software version will not work. If you fear to do it yourself, see if you can find a TV or PC repair shop with hot air station that can transfer it for you.

I have a wd black which I assumed the pcb is dead...To remove its rom chip,will I have to use a heat gun or I can use any other gripping tool to pull the rom out with force? Is that safe? Because I saw my boss take out the chipset from a mboard only by pulling it with force with a gripping tool,he don't need to unsolder it with heat gun and replace it with another chipset and the board still works

do you have a budget service? if i only send in a pcb and a donor board without the HDD and just want the bios chip swapped, would that be possible? no testing required, i already know it works (hotwired a cap, but not wanting to risk a burnout during transfer and would rather a proper swap), not good with soldering so I didn't bother trying to replace the cap myself (could be more wrong with it or other caps gonna burn out?) would prefer an outright swap of the 88i8845D-BHG2 controller (BGA) to the new board.

Hi, first of all thank you for the very informative and probably unique video that talks so clearly and knowledgeably about this subject. My Toshiba 500GB MK5056GSY, HDD2E61 D UL03 T is making a cyclic clicking noise and the OS says that no bootable device was found. When putting it on a dock it is not being recognized. Does this HD would need a ROM swap or a PCB swap would be enough? Thank you.

So I have one of the blue WD 1TB hard drives. It's a category 2 and apparently it needs a rom swap... It needs a new PCB (I already bought a replacement) because the sata data port is broken, but instead of a rom swap, could I simply format the drive? I currently have a butchered sata cable soldered to the pins and it works, but I really think it would be best to put that new PCB on and HOPEFULLY without a rom swap.

Only problem is it is not showing any partitions and claims it is now 3.6G instead of 2TB. Tried some data recovery on the drive but nothing found. Would this be due to the fact I have not swapped over the ROM chip? Or would the drive not show up at all if the ROM chip was the issue?

when you attach the new bios chip to the old board around 9:03, are you soldering it in specific places or just using a heat gun over the whole chip? your hands are hiding this in the video and it seems like the most important part of this process. will a heat gun possibly damage the chip? thanks!

Just using heat gun over whole chip. Heat gun won't damage it if you don't take a very long time. All you need is 10-15 seconds. If you using a rework station, keep it at about 375 F.

Useful input would be appreciated for my scenario. A Hitachi Travelstar has died. No motor spinup or anything. Got a board where Model, P/N and MLC match. The first two numbers on the sticker on the back match. The three large chips match (except one is a Samsung and one is Elpida). Swapped the boards and got motor spinup and heads clicking healthy. Doesn't show up on the PC. Did the Rom chip swap and still not recognized. Whats next?

Go by Revision number, that's an easiest way.

I have a failed Seagate Barracuda- firmware is 3.AAF. Ebay has a HDD with firmware 3.AAC. Is there any way in the world to make this work? Can I attach the new drive to a PC & upgrade to the dead drive's firmware before swapping the PCB? This is a drive a family member had in an enclosure & the PCB of that had a bad cap. Taking it out of the enclosure, it isn't recognized by any PC (using an external dock or direct-connect). Help? I'm in Australia, btw.

Send the drive to Donor Drives and it's gonna be fixed for $60 or you do not pay - simple is that.

I'm gonna give this service a try. I've packaged the PCB and mailed it already. This better work or it's $60 down the drain. -__-

+n3rdbear Not really, as we do not charge you if we are unable to repair your device. You only pay if we are successful.

Quick question, what kind of heat gun do you use to remove the ROM chip from the PCB? Do you know where I can purchase one? Thanks
