This is a quick video to show how you can do a data recovery from a dead hard drive.
Important Notes: - If your hard disk is still under the guarantee time, it would be wiser to send it to the manufacturing company instead of opening it this way.
- This video explains how to solve one specific problem that might face the hard disk. Follow these instructions only if the hard drive you have sound's like the one in this video.

Excellent video! Very few people on RU-vid or anywhere have shown that before you pay a data recovery company thousands of dollars to recover your data, it can't hurt to try this FREE fix. Love it.
@Tobi3425

If you dont care about your data feel free to do so. But it absolutly can hurt if you mess up (fingerprint on H-3) or you re just unlucky because of the dust. Filestructure is saved on H-0 + H-1 (lower surfaces) so you will notice if you messed up only until you start to read actually your data. Filestructure as MFT Map is normally not bigger than 1GB. So seeing your FS isnt any proof of a succesful datarecovery. If heads collect dust und scratch because of it your surfaces completly even Data receovery cant help you here.

Of course, I held my breath, awaiting your warning (at 3:05) that no hard drive opened this way should be re-used. Inevitably, some who watch your video will believe that if the drive now spins up, and was found on completion without obvious scratches, the drive has been brought back to life. The whole point of this procedure is to recover existing data as quickly as possible, and then put the drive to work as a fascinating paper weight (marking the drive with its volume name(s) and DOA date with a marking pen). Such "marking pen" documentation avoids enormous grief with data, later.

He discusses more or less what you just said towards the end of the video. As he states, this isn't to repair the drive for normal use. This is to get it working long enough to recover the data, then chuck the drive/replace with a new one.

@NetRolller3D
@NetRolller3D Год назад
A drive that has been opened should be considered dead as far as using it for further data storage - it's no longer reliable. However, as long as the drive wasn't powered up while open, and no damage was done (e.g. fingerprints on the platters), it should still be readable for recovery purposes. A note about dust: At 1:07, the part you can see in the lower right corner of the drive is an air filter. When the drive is first powered up after being resealed, it's designed in such a way that as the platters spin up, air will pass over the platter surfaces, blow off any dust, and trap it in that filter, before the heads even begin moving. (This is important because the drive mechanism can generate dust particles during normal operation.) So, unless it's massive amounts of dust, or something magnetic (e.g. iron gratings), dust is generally not an issue as far as recovery is concerned.
@teamtamer
@teamtamer Год назад
@@NetRolller3D I was probably more concerned that he spoke without a mask above the platter. Moisture PLUS dust, you're not going to blow that off.

After watching other YT videos on this topic, this is the best one to date I have seen. Glad you mentioned that after opening the hard drive and retrieving the contents, to not put the drive back into service as it will not be a reliable device. I would say in this current day and age, this isn’t quite so common as most of the new drives bought today are solid-state drives, although there are still lots of these mechanical drives still in use.

as a Datarecovery engineer I have to say how dangerous this video is. One fingerprint on the surface and head-3 will die for sure. Also the dust will get collected bei head-3 and might scratch the surface. You re able to see your filestructure? Very nice, but that doesnt mean you re able to read data. Information about the filestructure is saved on H-0 and H-1. If you contaminate surface of H-3 you will still get filestructure even you contaminated H-3..

also: if your HDD is spinning your heads are not stucked on the surface. So please dont open your HDD if you want your data back. If you dont care you can try

Something else that could be causing this problem: the USB connection/unit is failing. This is what happened to my Seagate external hard drive (bought in 2008ish). The unit was making a very faint clicking noise, and so thought the problem was the hard drive (as shown in this video). Once we got the hard drive out of the plastic shell, we put it into different 'shell' (hooked it up to power and a USB to the the computer) and the clicking noise went away, and i was able to access my files without an issue! Turns out the USB unit had become very loose from the green circuit board (it was so loose it was flipping up from the board), and so was basically not doing it's job. Of note, the hard drive got really hot after only running for 15 minutes, so it's probably on the fritz as well, but we were at least able to get data off of it before it (eventually) dies.

I think if i could replace it would solve the issue... Did you replace the USB unit ? What do you mean by "shell" , are you referring to the USB unit as "shell" ? I know it's late, but if you're there plz help Thanks

@@bricology I live in a small area with a low population, I work as a computer repair tech, and I send out HDDs for data recovery in a lab, and I do this typically around 2 or 3 times a year for $1600. So though it's rare, I would have to say it happens a lot more than 1 in 20000. That said it's always business computers or family photos recovery. I've never had someone pay that for some torrent files... yet. Definitely do not try this with important data, as the odds are far greater that you will render the data unrecoverable, and this is a last ditch effort, not the first thing you try.

my issue may be different. I have a Phanteks Enthoo Elite. It's a dual system setup. Separate PSUs for each system. The drives are used by the mini-ITX that i have. I have 3 WD Enterprise Drives. One Red (6TB), and two Gold (12TB and 4TB). I connected the Red drive, and 4TB Gold drive via 90 degree sata cables to the mini-ITX. And their power comes from the Corsair PSU (with Corsair cables) of the MAIN system. Both drives were detected by the mini-ITX until i thought, "if the drives are being used by the mini-ITX, i should should plug in their power to the Thermaltake PSU (the one being used by the mini-ITX". So, i turned off the system, flip both power switches off, waited 30 seconds and then unplugged both drives from the PSU of the MAIN system. Since i was at it, i connected the third drive (12TB Gold) to the SATA power cable, and plugged in all three to the Thermaltake PSU. Initially i forgot to connect the data cable of the third drive to the motherboard. I'm not sure if i had powered on the mini-ITX at that point. But i connected the data cable of the third PSU while the system was off. I powered on the mini-ITX, and then none of the drives were detected in Windows. I have an UEFI BIOS but there is no menu/listing for connected devices. Only in the Boot menu, the boot devices that show up are the M.2 drives ON the motherboard. After i had a friend in I.T. help me remotely. I connected the devices one by one, and even tried different ports, and enabling ALL SATA ports in the BIOS. None are detected. We even tried connecting the drives one by one to the MAIN motherboard, but the drives were still not detected. Originally all the drives were detected by my old computer through it's external hot swap bay (Thermaltake Overseer RX-1). I tried using the drives on my old PC, and they weren't detected there either. I don't know what else to do. I tried feeling whether or not the drives spun, but couldn't feel anything on the new system. On the old system it feels like the are vibrating, but that could just be the other components in the tower vibrating. Is it possible that the 90 degree data cables somehow got damaged because of how they are curved inside the case?? Should i use separate power cables for EACH hard drives? I know it seems like a dumb suggestion but I'm freaking out here.

this is what we call stiction in the field, when you heard that sound it can also be a motor seizure which blocks the platter. My 2 advice as DR Technician are 1 do this only if you don't care about the data, if your data are important then go to a professional 2 please don't use the second hard drive on the platter, the guy on the video is well versed in doing it but you may easily scratch the platter by doing as in the video. A method that you can use is to put your finger on the base of the Heads in the circular and outer area and rotate it while you rotate the screw (anti clock) in the center of the hard drive. The heads will go toward the outer part

This is great... The only problem with this is that most people will think that they can simply open an HDD in a regular room. HDDs are highly sensitive to particles in the air and must be opened in a highly controlled environment (ie. Clean Room). Without the proper tools and training, the user will end up making invisible (or visible!) scratches on the platter, rendering the data permanently lost.

Being about to read the drive directory information, and being able to actually pull a valid image of the drive contents are two entirely separate things. Opening a HDD outside of a true 'clean" enviorment is a death sentence for a drive, no matter how clean you think your work space is. Also, you most likely were placing some very nice scratches on the platters as you dragged the heads across them, meaning read error after read error when you try to image the drive. I would be very interested in seeing a full clone of that drive happen without it either failing outright, or having so many read errors that the data is unrecoverable.

He meant that opening a hard disk this way is only useful to recover important data, but is not suitable as a trusted hard disk to store in future more important data. You should have removed the Heads Magnet so that when you moved the heads while turning the platter they would freely move and would not be hard to move. I did what you did and guess what? I caused damage to the platter. In fact I didn't even use a screw driver to move the heads I saw on another video to use a dental pic and it STILL caused damage to the platter.

The heads are damaged and need replacement. Usually $300-400. Or if the drive does not spin up at all it could be the Printed Circuit Board. Or the Spindle Motor is fired. There are a lot of things that can prevent a HD from being Recognized in the OS.

@MrEthanhines
@MrEthanhines 5 лет назад
@@Nabiyah1 @Nabiyah1 Since it is spinning up it sounds like either one or more heads are failing. They may be trying hard to read and failing thus the "system locks". Otherwise it could be the platter(s) themselves. Either way more sophisticated software will be needed to isolate the problem. The good news is if you stop right now you should be able to retrieve a lot of the data if you take it to a pro. Some offer free inspection. Rexem : That is an actual approach to "fixing" a hard drive. And by Fixing, I mean bringing the hard drive back to life long enough to get the data off it. And when he says he was "simply dropping a stuck hard drive on to the floor", you are NOT starting off by dropping the thing from chest high to the floor. Start off at 6 inches from the ground and see if that does anything. If not, try 12 inches. But don't keep going until you are dropping from chest high. There is no reason to. If you are dropping the thing from say ... 2 feet off the ground and that does nothing, do you really think dropping it from chest high is going to make much of a difference? If you think Yes, then please move on because you are not using you head wisely. The thing here is to realize something may be stuck inside of the hard drive and all you are trying to do is free it up. And at 2 feet off the ground, that's pretty high up and there isn't any reason to go higher. How do I know this? I don't know for sure exactly, it's an educated guess. I've torn open more than a few hard drives in my time and have put together more computers than most people, so anything I do on computers comes from experience. I personally have never had dropping a hard drive be the fix for me, but I know some people who it did work for. And currently I am working on my brothers computer who's hard drive is making a clicking sound when I boot the computer up. I've already tried booting this computer up using a bootable Ubuntu Linux DVD just to see if Ubuntu would recognize the hard drive. If it did, end of story, I would be almost done. But Ubuntu didn't recognize the HD so now I am searching for some utility that is better tailored for my particular problem. And there are LOTS of utilities out there, seems most are Linux based, just need to find one that looks good to me and go from there. I may be done in another 30 minutes if everything goes well. If not, I may be here 24 hours from now still searching. You just never know.
