We look at the basics of a DIY reverse osmosis kit. It's very important to maintain chlorine removal, as chlorine will destroy your RO membrane.
I've got a few amazon lists ranging from the absolute simplest to a setup like mine. The simple setup is cheaper up front, but will cost significantly more over the life of the setup.
Simplest setup - $40 + membrane and tubing
chlorine filter replacement every 350 gallons and RO will probably fail every 1000 gallons
Monthly upkeep cost per 300 gallons - $15.77
Average per gallon cost at 300g/month including initial cost - $0.07
a.co/2VcDwNg
Basic Setup - two canisters + RO filter - $88 + membrane and tubing
chlorine filter replacement every 4,500 gallons, particle filter change every 15,000 gallons, RO failure every 7000 gallons
Monthly upkeep cost per 300 gallons - $1.36
Average per gallon cost at 300g/month including initial cost - $0.02
a.co/70aovJz
Ebay kit
Monthly upkeep cost per 300 gallons - $2.16
Average per gallon cost at 300g/month including initial cost - $0.06
I do 4500 gallons a month, roughly, and at that scale the DIY kit costs me $20 per month, while the ebay kits would run me about $50/month and the simplest kit would run about $240/month.

I just found out that the well water I was using got harder over the last 6 months so seeing collecting rainwater is a bit of a pain I thought I'd look into RO. This will totally work modified to my needs. Good information as always.

Plumbed into the cold line? Yeah. It will only run while the water is on, so you can just throw a quick on/off nozzle at the intake. I wouldn't let it sit long without use, though, most RO membranes go bad if they dry out

Thanks for the video! Super helpful. I already designed my own water filter system for the house and want to add a RO system for when I need aquarium water. Was thinking about connecting a T with a valve and then running it through a RO system when I need aquarium water. Do I need to add in some tap water when I mix the saltwater?
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 3 года назад
Aquarium salt usually has everything you need in it, so it's best for use directly with r/o or deionized waters. Tap water mixes are only really needed for freshwater to prevent filter bacteria related pH crashes.

thanks for the video im in the process of aquiring parts as we speak to complete my RO setup. quick question do you think a De-ionizing stage after the RO would be beneficial or unnecessary

Are you asking if you should put a stage to remove ionization? You want your water ionized.

@@xirote420 I just noticed you dont have Ionizing resin stage. is it because it adds sodium to the water?

hey mad scientist where is the pump that pumps the water through your system ? I didn't catch that in the video? Is there a mechanical pump or you just use water pressure from your your regular pipes ?

Ok so I've been looking for something like this to use on on my tanks but with out the R/O (my landlord pays the water bill and I don't want to run the bill up) *2 questions* 1st will this remove chloramines? 2nd do I need a pressure regulator at my source water if so what psi?
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 лет назад
You can use a setup like this to remove chloramines, but not with activated carbon. The filters to remove that are catalytic carbon filters, and they're about twice the price. If you aren't doing R/O you could probably get away with a single catalytic carbon unit, but I'd probably put in a 10 micron filter first just to prolong the carbon lifespan
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 лет назад
Also, if you're going to use drippers or a float valve a pressure regulator is a good idea so you don't flood anything. If you're just filtering water that you're going to add manually I wouldn't worry about it, my water pressure spikes to 90 sometimes and it doesn't have any effect on the filter stuff, it just blows off dripper heads (I've had to hose clamp all of mine in) Rv pressure regulators set to 30-35psi are pretty cheap, so adding one to be safe right after your shut off valve is probably a good idea
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 лет назад
Also worth noting, chloramine removal requires a fair amount of catalytic carbon, if I recall correctly. it's a real pain of a chemical, so you might be better off trying to get some granulated catalytic carbon and a refillable inline housing instead of the kind I use here

Hard to tell for sure but is that a metal coupling you're using in between the Dupont cannisters? I would use a plastic threaded coupling as metal threads into plastic will eventually strip the threads. Could that be why it's leaking?
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 2 года назад
It just leaks because the canisters have garbage threads. Using 4x as much Teflon as you expect is necessary no matter what kind of fitting you use in these ones. I added two more canisters and piped the whole house through them, new ones used plastic fittings and still had the problem I would use a different canister if I were to redo it, the pressure valves at the top are poor quality as well. Just not a great product, but i was short on cash when i did it so i used the cheap one and just fought with it until it worked Switched the whole thing over to a water softener anyway, even with my very hard water the salt levels out of the softener are low enough to be fine for all my plants and everything

I just want to take slightly salty taste from my bore hole so I can drink it. I have installed filter, it improved but am looking for a cheap way of taking the salty taste away. My question is can I install the 2 membranes as you did. Do you think it will give me taste free water. Do I need a pump, kindly advice I can send you picture of what I have if need be
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 5 лет назад
Yes, an RO membrane will remove salt, but they're kind of pricey and go bad pretty quickly (I replace it every 45 days), so if it's for drinking water I'd look at one of the cheaper RO kits that come with the storage and auto shutoff systems

My only concern water is scarce and in short supply and the amount of water we use in RO will be dangerous in the future .

Buddy, the micron size on a carbon filter refers to the granule size of the carbon, not the filtration size like on a regular sediment cartridge. That's important to understand.
@MischiefandFins

Buddy, I don't have a carbon block in this video, it's a wrap. I linked the stuff I used in the description. But, hey, thanks for just assuming I was wrong when you couldn't be bothered to find out what I was even doing.

@MischiefandFins

I'm not sure this is what you think it is This is for cleaning tap water, which already has more than enough pressure to drive the process. There is no place that a pump would make any sense in this situation

Why do you even mix with tap water back again? Atleast mix it with part of the drain water instead, why waste that.
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 5 лет назад
Are you asking why I'm not trying to use straight RO water in my tanks? Because RO water doesn't have enough carbonates for beneficial bacteria to live, and live plants require calcium, magnesium, and other things that are in the water column. Mixing roughly 20% tap into the RO is standard for pretty much anything outside of deionized marine tank setups, where the owner manually adjusts water hardness and carbonate levels. Most people do RO mixing manually in a large bucket, but this is an automated system, so mixing is done automatically. For RO membranes to work, you have to have waste water. Trying to feed that back into the RO out line would completely stop the entire system from working and ruin the RO membrane in a couple of hours. The flow restrictor is designed for optimal performance, and more or less back pressure stops the system from working. Recovery of waste water would require a holding tank, a high precision adjustable pump, better mixing equipment, and would waste a giant amount of money and space and only reduce waste by 20 gallons or so a day.
@ignasanchezl

I was just saying, instead of using part tap water in your mix, use part drain water.
@ignasanchezl
@ignasanchezl 5 лет назад
Sorry I'm not really into aquariums, that's why I didn't understand why you were mixing the part of the water. I'm just looking for ideas and experiences of people who experiment with reverse osmosis. I know quite a lot myself already.
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 5 лет назад
I know you're suggesting that I mix in drain water, I'm explaining why that won't work. you can't just plug the drain water line straight in where I have the tap line or you'd get tap water out the other side, not 90% RO 10% tap This setup runs all the time, this is not a "make 3 gallons and turn off" kitchen sink unit, this is a "generate as much RO as the membrane will allow, all day every day" setup. The drain water cannot be restricted, it has to run at 300ml with no back pressure or it will not work. Free flow of the drain line means that recovery of drain water would require a holding tank, high quality pumps, better pressure regulators than I currently have, and an overflow to allow the 95% of drain water that I don't need to go down the drain anyway. It would require that I spend hundreds of dollars to save pennies on my water bill. It is not as simple as "just use drain water" Does that clarify?
@ignasanchezl
@ignasanchezl 5 лет назад
I disagree you don't need any pumps. Some home RO units have an adjustable valve to divert some of the drain into the permeate to adjust the TDS. You still run a line to drain, yes. All you need is a T before the flow restrictor, there you would put the pressure regulator and connect that to your mixer. Then you could swap the flow restrictor for a lower flow (or an adjustable one), depending on how much water you mix, still if you don't change it, the benefit of running more water through the membrane will help keep scaling from occurring.
