Great DIY, might steal it lol. I’m worried about you, you are so well spoken and articulate and seem passionate about what you are doing but you sound very winded, you ok bro? Keep up the awesomeness, it’s a really nice build!

Ha! Yeah, that winded sound was a result of a bunch of things, and none related to my health! Super windy day so I was trying to project my voice without yelling (the camera was struggling to pick up my voice). I also ate a crap ton of food right before, so it felt like a had a food baby when I was sitting. Anyway, I'm good bro!

Nice mate, from experience, I'm sure the front of it would of bowed a bit, plus bounced as you drove. Another roof rack bar above your front doors would of fixed that. Thankfully I have a large roof cage, so will not have that problem. Interested on how you secured the carpet in main 4 inch section. Mick from Australia

Thanks Mick. I'll post a pic soon, but it bounces very, very little, and hasn't really bowed (maybe just a tad, but not enough to notice). And the paint has held up really well. Mine sits off to the side a bit so I haven't needed an extra rack, but that would work. It doesn't flop around much at all. the 4" is really quite stiff. As for the carpet, I haven't secured it yet, but I think just a couple of dabs of glue on the reducer side would be enough. It doesn't seem to move very much just tucked in there. Overall, I've been really happy with it.

I didn't see how you put the carpet inside and if you glued it down or not?

I didn't glue it, but you easily could. The fabric I used was stiff enough to keep its form.

This is a great build just wondering what the overall length was once complete?
@steveanderson4901
@steveanderson4901 2 года назад
I made it about 11 feet total in length so I would be sure a 10' rod would fit easily. It's still holding up great. No sag, and the paint job doesn't have a single chip.

Steve, just seeing this and excited to build it and save some $$$...curious now that it's been 2+ years if it is still holding up ok? anything you would change if you were to build it again? Thanks so much for creating this video!

I'm actually shocked at how well it's doing. Still on top of my truck. Paint held up great, even in a hail storm, and still no perceptible drooping.

I might make the large part where the reels and handles fit twice as long (maybe 3 feet) since I also put bigger spinning rods in there.

Nice rod vault. Best yet DIY I've seen. I like the off-center reducer. Any chance you can fit multiple rods in it? Would it be better to mount it with the reducer "bulb" hanging down instead of up? So that the reels hang down, not face up. I'm thinking they would bounce around less if hanging down.

Yes, that was one of the things I had in mind with the reducer. For my mix of fly and spin, the upright position of the reducer works, but if I only had fly rods I think I would flip it down.. I can easily fit 3 rods in mine. I just wrap something soft around the reels to keep them from rubbing together.
