Explanation of the rope mechanics. Please see my first video... • DIY Roll Up Sun Shade The shade material was bought at The Home Depot but I'm sure you can purchase it online also like Ebay or Amazon.
so great! just moved into my new apartment with great SoCal sunlight through my patio and sliding door, but definitely needs a sunshade during late after noon so my place doesn't feel like an oven! will try this out! Excited to try this build!!!! thank you sir!
What a great and simple plan! Yours are the best videos I've seen on this topic. Thank you for sharing, and especially for taking time to make the second video to show the details!
Wow, great video and explanation! I have a south facing front porch with a swing, in the fall and winter I can’t swing bcz of the sun shining in. I’m thinking about using a 12’X9’ Harbor Freight canvas drop cloth to make this. My cost should be under $25.
I know this ia 4 years ago but I really needed this info. Also that was the exact questions I had when watching the first video. Thanks @DIY Cheap N Easy. I'm going to copy your exact design and give you feedback.
Thanks for the inspiration. I made a flap opening much more convenient to operate and attractive as well. My friends think I'm very clever to have done it myself, but I do give credit to you and your video. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions.
This looks like THE inexpensive solution! Guessing you can make it look as high-end as you like, my only question now is what type of fabric did you choose (and now that you are two yrs in, has it been durable)? One addtl comment: I love the idea of it rolling up behind the porch trim/soffit (my choice will be to adjust it up a little higher) at the top...winds and weather in the midwest make this an absolute must! KUDOS, bless you, and thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your kind words! It's shade screen material that I bought from The Home Depot. You can also purchase material online from other stores. As far as durability, it still looks great! Thanks again and blessings!
My sister and I have been searching for a good video on putting up a shade on my her patio and I'm very glad we finally found yours. Love your idea...it is simple and functional and one that is easy to understand. Will be going out to buy our materials. Looking forward to doing this project. Thank you so very much for sharing your project.😊
@pamelalesane4985 that's awesome! I'm glad you found value in my video. Please make sure you watch both videos for more information and be sure to message me if you have any questions. Also, there's many different material options available online that are reasonably priced. Blessings!
How did you sew the bottom pocket for the 1" pvc pipe as well as to sew the two sides? My wife is a great seamstress, therefore, I know what a time-consuming job it would be doing it by hand.
I sewed it by hand... not too difficult. I used an upholstery needle and thread. If you have a heavy duty machine, that might work. Thanks for watching... blessings!
Did the same with older Coolaroo blind that had stopped working. The fabric was still in good shape. I order from Amazon cord and rollup blind cord locks. Works great
Thanks for sharing!! I think it would be much easier to replicate if you showed it being made from start to finish. But still, both vids are leading me to want to try it. I'd probably use duck fabric for added shade/privacy.
It's really not that hard to do. If your contemplating doing it then go for it I'm sure you can do it. I sewed everything by hand but if you can use a machine then it will be even easier! Let me know if you do and please ask me any questions if you need to... thanks!
Yeah I was surprised too! But I just copied the design of a roll down screen that I had and it did the same thing so I figured this one would do the same thing and it does. Thanks for the comment and blessings!
@@diycheapneasy6460 I am getting ready to start this as a project! Did you sew the bottom and sides with a sewing machine? Also, did you use a standard braided nylon rope or something else? Thank you!
@@scottphillips7355 I hand sewed it but I'm sure you can use a machine... maybe heavy duty? As for the rope, I used clothesline rope from Home Depot... which ever length you need.
Thanks for the great explanation! My wife is wanting something like this for our porch but with screening. I had looked at the automatic ones but this is perfect!
What material did you used for the tarp mesh, vinyl or cloth. Did you buy it in rolls or you bought custom made. Thank you for this wonderful video you shared. God bless.
I bought it from Home Depot. It came in a 6'x20' roll and I just cut it to the size I needed. You can also purchase them online... maybe cheaper! Blessings!
We sold the house back in Sept of last year but I do visit my old neighbor now and then. I look over the fence just to see how things look lol and it still looks great!
Thank you for making such a useful video... I have seen many videos but your was simply very good to understand how to make DIY Thank you and God bless you
Thanx for this video! We recently screened in our back porch but would like to add something for privacy. This solution seems it will work perfectly! Appreciate your clear instructions and details. BTW tell your granddaughter she did an excellent job on the first video assisting Grandpa! Be careful on those ladders...get a spotter next time or pause the camera, then get down, and start the recording again. Do not want anything to happen to you Sir. Have a great day.
Thanks First video was good as far as showing the completed project 🙂 This video is very useful as for explaining the construction 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂 Thanks again
I've thought about doing one but I haven't really sat down to design it yet. I'll be building an extension to my patio this year sometime and I'll probably do it then. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Thanks for the question... blessings!
Very nicely done. It's still looks diy but more like steam punk somewhat...but not ugly as usually diy things look:D Don't get me wrong I am excited to copy your roll up idea and it looks real good too!
awesome diy, im trying to install mosquito mesh on my 16 feet long balcony ,already got 12 ft. x 19 ft mosquito tarp, and attached on top part ,i was thinking to make tarp roll out like yours, wondering how to run rope ,would be great to have close view or schematic . Thank you.
I don't know how a schematic will help you... the video shows exactly how to do it? If it's absolutely necessary I guess I could draw one for you. Maybe watch the video a couple of more times and if you need one I'll draw you one, you'll just have to give me a couple of days... blessings!
Is the fabric/shade thin enough to let the air/breeze through? I really like this idea for sun shade but I want a thin fabric to still let the air flow through.
I believe there are different thicknesses of shade materials... you'll just have to find one that's good for you. My patio is open on the ends so air still circulates thru but there is some restriction of air with this material. Maybe install an outdoor ceiling fan? That's something that we're going to do. Thanks for the question and blessings to you!
Do you think this would work for a 5m wide by 2.5m high opening? Also, why didnt you put the furring stips at the top of your beam? That way you wouldnt see the blind when its rolled up (it is hidden completely from the beam whem not in use)
It should, but you might have to run a fourth rope though? I guess I could've mounted it higher... I never really thought about it. Thanks for your feedback... blessings!
The rope was 3/16 all purpose clothesline rope. I'm sure you could probably find something that's a little more weather resistant but that's what I used. Thanks for the question and God bless you!
I stapled in to the backside of the furring strip. Then it's mounted to the beam with screws... that adds extra support. Thanks for the question. Please be sure to watch both videos for any other questions... Blessings!
simple project, but my simple brain couldn't follow the rope, it took several tries. Frustrating, I cut the first rope too short, even tho I thought I premeasured right.
@@diycheapneasy6460 It;s still not working,,,,,,,, I should have drawn out your instructions where to place the eyelets and rope. I'm tired and frustrated. I guess it will get there one of these months.
Hi! Great idea thanks for the guide! I have a question about the ropes... why did you have to use 3 separate ones? Could you just use one continuous one to loop under the pvc and back up, or would it not roll up properly?
Thank you! I don't think that would work being that the rope would have to be able to go up both sides and the screen is secured on the back side. If you can figure something out great!... I used the system that was on an older roll up that I had bought from Home Depot years ago. Thanks for the input... blessings!
Sorry for the late response. You would just tie a knot at the end of the rope. It's nothing too difficult. There's really not a picture to show you... sorry.
Once you roll up the shade/ blinds then you secure the ropes by winding them around the brackets. That will keep the shade from coming down. Thanks for looking... blessings!
Exactly what I was thinking about doing, just moved late last summer into a new house and when the sun is setting it's unbearable so I nailed a tarp up to block the sun so I could grill, problem was storms, I had to tie the tarp up before it would rip it. Anyways your design looks perfect but I'll have to use EMT (metal conduit) but I do have some strong paracord well chinesium paracord. DIY Cheap N Easy, I'm all about it thanks brother God Bless and thank you !
Thank you so much for sharing! I rigged up a shade with a shower curtain, but I want to make a rope system so I can easily roll it up. I didn't know how to do that, but thanks to your video I know what to do,
You USED 3 cords on The unit,4 I-Bolts,one for EACH cord then one on END to guide all The ropes DOWN. How FAR FROM END FOR The I Bolts ,looks like one was CENTERED and The OTHER two looked maybe 2ft FROM EACH END?
Yes exactly!...2ft in from the edge. Not that it needed to be but I liked the way it looked...😁. I'm sure with a shorter shade the distance might be shorter than 2ft.
super genial!!! i need to do a shade too. What type of fabric did you buy? it must strong for the the wind and sturdy also for the sun. I would really appreciate your info. Super!!!!, nice and easy!!!!!!
I bought the shade material from Home Depot. It was 6'x20'... not sure of the brand, I bought it several years ago but just barely used it. They still have the same brand... they only carry a couple. I've seen the same brand on Ebay for cheaper and for more volume depending on how much you're doing... just an fyi. I hope this helps... blessings!
@@diycheapneasy6460 Its made by Easy Gardner and the color is called saddle tan. I have sewn 1000s of feet of that throughout the years. Used to buy 1500 ft at a time. I have discontinued using it as they have changed how they make it and it now thin and flimsy. It will still last well in the sun it just doesnt shade as much as much as my clients want.
Hi! Wonderful DIY project and video 😁.I have a few questions for you, what size eye bolt did you use? What kind/size of rope did you use? How did you hem the edges, did you just use plain needle and thread or you used a lacing needle and thicker thread? Thank you!
Hi and thanks! Sorry for the late response but I had thrown away all the packaging from the products that I used so I had to go to Home Depot to get the info and I was barely able to get over there. The eye bolts were 5/16 x 4" The rope was All purpose clothesline rope 3/16 x 100ft. As far as the thread, I used the thickest thread my wife had in her swing box... lol! She had some upholstery thread from years ago that worked out great. I used a medium sized needle not too big and that worked fine. Sorry but I don't know what size it is. I hope this helps and good luck on your project. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask... blessings!
@@diycheapneasy6460 thanks for the reply! We started the project but our problem right now is that the ropes that are supposed to pull up and close the fabric keeps shifting out of place especially when it's windy. How do you make them stay in its proper place?
@@_t__r__ ... good morning! A couple of questions... is the shade secure when it's down? How far are the ropes from the ends? When mine is rolled down I secure the shade in the pvc fittings and then I wrap the rope around the brackets. The rope is usually taut and stays in place. My ropes are about 2ft from the ends of the shade and pvc pipe. I hope this info helps...
