How to make and install a roll up sun shade. Please see my other video with a little more explanation of the ropes and their function. • DIY Roll Up Sun Shade ...
I love this... we just put a large roof over a patio behind the house, and I'm thinking I need something for those extra sunny days, but when I looked at the prices of outdoor shades, it would be huge! This is a great idea. When it's rolled up you can hardly tell it's there!
Yes... way cheaper than buying them made already! I'm glad you found value in my videos. Be sure to watch both if you haven't already. Thanks again and blessings!
Thanks for sharing this idea. Took your plan and mounted Vinyl Manual Roll-Up Sun Shades 120 in. W x 72 in. from Home Depot, which no longer come with draw strings to raise and lower (you know, "safety concerns") , but they now work Better than they used to out of the box thanks to your eyelet rope/cord system.
Thank you so much and god bless you sir I was trying to do this with a heavyweight tarp and it worked great it was hard to sew but I did it thanks to you and god bless you and all your family and granddaughter I didn’t see her in the video but she did raise the shade I love it you are the best teacher thank you so much
This is wonderful!! I was just looking at replacement shades, and the cost for (3) 6 ft W x 5 ft H was close to $500!! I'm going to give this a go this weekend! Thanks so much!!
@DIY Cheap N Easy Yes, I had watched the 2nd video. What was the fabric you used? I'm looking for something that will block the sun, while still being able to enjoy my view
@joannestevens1680 it was material that I bought at The Home Depot years ago. There are so many more options available online nowadays. I'm sure you can find something that's right for you. Just look for sun shade material.
Perfect. Great video (apart from the vertical camera perspective) and I appreciate you walking us through the process and all of the components in order to get everything working. Thank you!!
@@diycheapneasy6460 thank you for the video. We made one, but it does not roll up. We used 3/4 pvc. The shade is 8' pang and 6' wide. We put a 3/8" metal rod inside the pvc pipe for added weight. Any suggestions?
Great job my man! I’m looking for ideas today because my football Saturday morning on the patio is being interrupted by Oklahoma cold winds, lol. 5 mins out on the patio in Carhartt gear I immediately said to myself that this is for the birds.
Thank you sir. Just followed your instructions and was able to setup the rollup sun shade. Your video was super helpful and had all the details clearly explained. 🙏
Love it! I have looking for some ideas to do it myself, do prefer some roll up-down than curtains and you gave me the perfect and simple way to do it. thanks for sharing!
Great Video and simple design. When I replaced four Coolaroo shades that designs were basically what you made here years ago with UV sunshade mesh so we could see through it much easier this would be ideal for a 24 foot long patio that over heats in the hot season here in NW MT. I understand what you are showing as far as the mechanism of the rollers and ropes because that's how the Coolaroo blinds work. All in all looking forward to giving it a trial run. I have the coolaroo fabric too which I can repurpose for this and it's still new never used since we didn't like it on the windows because the view was basically blocked. Anyway enough fabric for the two ends of the patio would help a lot. There is some shade on the longer run it's the ends that the sun in morning and later in the afternoon cause to heat up. I put up double bubble aluminum insulation on the underside of the roof with the white faced down and it helps but not enough. Very nice well done video. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome, I'm glad you found value in my video. Be sure to watch my second video explaining the rope operation. The link is in the description... blessings!
Hi Albert. Firstly, thank you so much for your invaluable videos which are absolutely fantastic. I’m currently in the process of attempting to make one using your instructions, and I have a question. Apologies if it’s already been asked, but I did try first searching your comments but couldn’t find one. It’s constantly very windy where I live so how the blind is attached to our verandah posts is really important. But being able to pull them up and down very regularly is also important too. Your coupler idea is great and looks like it would be easy to use for my elderly mother’s hands when she wants to roll it up. But I don’t understand though why you’ve used the cap on just the left side.
Good morning, and thank you! There's no particular reason that I had used a cap. I eventually replaced the cap with an elbow (90°) because I installed a sun shade on the end of my patio also and used the elbow for both of the shades. Using the PVC couplers are only one way to secure the shades at the bottom. Please use what works best for you and your mother. You can use rope tie downs by drilling a hole thru the PVC pipe and running a rope thru it and tying it around the post or maybe some velcro straps would work? Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will do a great job. Thank you for your comments and many blessings to you!
Great video, thank you. I was wondering - What exactly is the shade MATERIAL? I'm from Canada, and our Home Depots don't stock the same goods as your Home Depots (the same goes for other common stores like Lowes), so I may need to find the closest equivalent. Thanks in advance.
There's several options for shade material online that might even be cheaper and better quality. Just Google shade material and you can probably find something that fits your needs... thank you and blessings!
Great video! what type of rope did you use? I watched your follow up video and was able to see the rope very clearly. Thank you for being such a great communicator. :)
Great idea! I need to make one for our patio. Like yours my span is 13 feet. A couple of questions: How did you fasten the shade material to the PVC pipe, and how do the ropes attach to the PVC pipe to allow the shade to roll up?
Thank you for your comment! As for the PVC pipe I hemmed the bottom of the shade material and slid the pipe in. As for the rope, after I mounted the furring I measured as to where I wanted my eye bolts and my ropes. I pre-drilled the holes for my eye bolts about a inch above where my ropes where going to be. Once you have all your eye bolts in then you can start installing your ropes. Start with the furthest point of your shade then loosen a couple of screws on the furring strip and slide one end of the rope between the back side of the furring strip and the beam and tied a small knot at the end just above the furring strip to make sure it doesn't pull out and then re-tightened the screws again to secure it. The rope never attaches to the shade screen or pvc pipe. It loops down under the shade screen then up the other side and threads thru the eye bolts. Once you see how long you need the first rope then you cut it and then repeat the process on the middle rope and then again for the last rope. When you pull on the ropes to put the screen up the screen will automatically start to roll up. I hope all this wasn't too confusing. I'm here if you have any more questions or clarification... thanks again and blessings!
I returned to add this info. I bought fence shade fabric from Amazon, White, 90% blockage!! with tape and grommets - it's still going to work. It's 8 ft wide and 50 feet long. Then per section the schedule 40 pvc pipe, one cap, one straight coupling and 2 pipe hangers. I can't see what you are using for guiding the rope? ( Using my phone 📱) Then metal eyes to hang. Anyways, I'm thankful for you making it easier for all of us.
Thanks for the comments... I'm glad you found value in my video! Did you watch my second video? The link is in the description... it explains things in a little more detail. Blessings!
Definitely a great video to come across when looking to diy this myself. I did have one question, what is the material you are using as the shade cover?
It's shade material I bought at The Home Depot. You can also purchase it online at others stores too. I'm glad you found value in my video... blessings!
No I don't. Just the explanation on this video and the second video gives details on the role operation. Watch the second video if you haven't seen it yet... just click on the attached link... thanks and blessings!
Nice work. I've done something similar with wooden closet poles and shade material. I simply stapled the fabric to the wood and hung the poles with pipe clamps. I just rolled them up for winter and they lasted for about 7 years. I really like the way you did this, but when you hemmed the bottom sleeve, what type of thread or string did you use for the hemming? Did you do it by hand or machine? We have really intense sun and pretty severe wind here in Northern AZ and I want to make sure it lasts for a while. Thanks.
Yes we've experienced the wind up north many times! I used some upholstery thread that my wife had in her sewing box... lol! I sewed it by hand but I've had other people respond that they have used a regular sewing machine. I sure there's a more durable one for outdoor use though. Thanks for the comment... blessings!
This is exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you for posting video! I have a question. How does the 3 ropes work or how do you install ropes? Thank you!!
Thank you again! I apologize, as right after I sent comment, I started reading other comments asking same. I found your 2nd video...😏 Truly appreciated!! So simple too!
I have the same thing, 13 feet across as well..but mine doesn't "roll" it just goes up in bunches. I also only have 2 pulleys on either end. Could the 3rd pulley make the shade roll? Or are you doing something else?
Good morning! At first I only put two ropes and it worked fine. It bowed a little in the middle so that's why I added a third rope. Are you able to send a video or pictures so that I can see what's going on...?
@diycheapneasy6460 no I can't, my top piece of wood broke over the winter, so I have to replace that 1st. I've had the shade up for probably 8 years. When I do I'll add a middle pulley and see if that helps. It MAY be which way the rope is being pulled also, either rolling up in front of or behind the screen.
@@diycheapneasy6460 Thank you for your reply. I am going to have a go at making one for my area. Your video has helped me alot. Thank you so much. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
That's so neat!! Thank you so much for posting this, the rope, I can see where it goes through the eyehook but do you tie the other side to the eyehooks? Or do you tack it down on the wood furring? Thank you again ❤️
I think you are great. Next time I'll make my own. right now I have a old vinyl blind it's it's got all the parts but I had to reposition it and it's impossible to find out to hang them . I'm a lady alone. Can you give a link or describe. How to do this. I'm disabled no help and at a loss. Just the old fashioned. Vinyl blinds two wheels a pull stream Ana loop the at goes where?
There's a link to a second video that I made explaining the rope function. I'm not sure it will work with a vinyl blind though? Wish I could be of more help... sorry!
I may have missed it, but do you have a reference for running the line up, through eyelets, down under PVC edge, back up and over to the next eyelet to repeat and after the last eyelet all the way back across the top and down to your tiedown (or do you just tie it down at the lat eyelet)?
@diycheapneasy6460 Yes, that helps. Could you have done it with one continuous line, just screwed down on the last one? Maybe there'd be too much friction to easily pull the line unless you used a small double-gang pully. I am thinking about making a roll-up golf hitting net... Cheers!
@diycheapneasy6460 Guess it is worth an experiment...seems the principle is the same and all vertical segments would move at the same speed...plus, there'd be one line to tie off when raised. Thanks for the feedback.
Is there a cheaper substitute for the fabric? I'm planning on cleaning up and helping decorate my back porch for my mom and I'm on a bit of a tight budget.
I guess you can use any roll of material that you want the only thing would be the durability of a product. I had a person tell me they used a tarp. The cost of the materials I used was about $80.
Sorry I took so long to get back...I just saw your comment. I posted a second video with a link in the description explaining the rope operation... just click on it... thanks!
@@JuanV-l6s please watch my second video. There's a link in the description. It explains how the ropes are connected and how they work. Thanks for looking... blessings!
It's shade screen material. I bought it from The Home Depot. You can also order it online from other places like Ebay or Amazon. Another place is called the Sun Shade Depot.
Yes! I laid the PVC pipe at the bottom and folded the material over it so that I knew how wide my hem needed to be. I've had several other questions so I think I'm going edit my video to include a little more detail once I figure out how to do it... lol! Stay tuned and blessings!
The shade material was 6'x20' and I bought it at Home Depot. I cut 7' off of the length to make 13'. You can also purchase it online like on Ebay or Amazon.
@@karenp5374 Good morning! Did you get a chance to watch my second video? There's a link in the description. It explains the rope function. It's not connected to the shade material. I hope it gives you some clarity. Blessings!
Hi and thanks for your question! I will be editing my video once I figure out how to do it and I'll try to show how it works. Thanks again and blessings!
Good afternoon! I couldn't figure out how to edit my first video so I added another one with a little more explanation of the ropes...I hope it helps... thanks!
