DIY Roof Batten Canoe, super simple design - everyone can do, with only few common tools

Felix have you considered adding a small mast and sail to this project. Something that is easy to deploy and quickly removeable in case of wind gusts threatening to cause a capsize. If you install a block of wood on the bottom just near the front brace and add a block above it a simple mast could be fashioned from a long broom handle and you could make a simple triangular sail from a bedsheet. Attach the sail to the mast and a small boom which is only fastened with a small loop of rope to the bottom of the mast so that you can move the boom to the other side of the mast easily and a length of rope to the outboard end of the boom so you have a degree of control over the speed of your craft by pulling in the sail or letting it swing out depending upon the direction and strength of the wind. I think that this arrangement of rigging is known as a Luff or Gaff rigging.

Felix, I wish I were half as skilled as you! Congrats to you. Pro tip: Paint the canoe red with a big white cross in the middle to show off the Swiss flag! It will look absolutely beautiful. Also, get rid of that bike seat, it's too uncomfortable. Look for alternatives online if you're out of ideas. I'm sure there are better alternatives. The project is looking amazing. I can't wait to see you putting this baby to work next Friday.

Felix, you surprised me. I did not except this kind of seat but it is genius. It only partially supports your weight as the third leg of a tripod with your knees and keeps your center of gravity low. I very much look forward to seeing your report on its comfort for multi hour trips. The ends look wonderful and do make it look more of a traditional Indian canoe. I have owned several canoes and yours looks every bit as good or better than those. The only thing left is to see how it tracks and performs. I am guessing it will not be quite as aerodynamic as a curved bottom but it should be more stable and not as tippy as a curved bottom. It is well worth the trade off for ease of build in my opinion. I am going to build one based on your design but am having trouble sourcing spruce roof batten here in the U.S. I can easily get cedar 1x4” and split them lengthwise in half. What are your thoughts on cedar? Keep up the great work! I am amazed at your ingenuity! Best, Richard

Bicycle seat for a canoe seat is a neat idea, especially for those that ride a bike often and are happy with that type seat.

In Canada some Native Tribes hold cources on birch bark canoe using mordern adheasives . Great video !!!

I think that lumber is called firring strips here. Never thought of using them. Cool.

Felix! Glad you're still making videos, not locked in you're house! I have a question. Could you please make a video on how to the clean the SAK? I own a SwissChamp and rinse it often under clean water, but I see a white substance forming, it is blocking spring action of tools. Can still use but I think it shouldn't be there. I though maybe minerals from water build up, but shouldn't happen on stainless steel, yes? Maybe I am missing something. See you!

One of the biggest challenges with any RU-vid channel where the maker shows how he made something is the multitude of suggestions that viewers will add. And part of the problem with that is that you have to weigh the people who are offering advice vs the ones who give negative comments and vs the positive comments without suggestions. It’s very difficult and when you don’t want to come across as rejecting of comments and ignoring the majority and still maintaining the good guy persona, it’s often far more difficult then the project itself. I wish more people would consider that when making comments, because if a content creator becomes jaded by the negativity, it may compel them to stop making videos, and then what would we all have? No videos!

I may be using an upscaled version of your basic canoe design to build the hulls on a small sailing catamaran. The 90 deg. sides and absolutely level gunnel-to-gunnel plane makes it a cinch to enclose the top and make a water-tight catamaran hull..., I mean, two hulls. I thank you.

Felix, I don't blame you for wanting to test your own design out first. I would do the same thing. My suggestions last week were just things that you might want to try later on and the suggestions I leave today are offered under the same conditions, because it didn't sound to me like you were exactly saying " Leave me alone, I don't want anymore suggestions!!!". If I'm wrong, just ignore me. LOL If you take your rope out and pass it through a 4 inch/100 mm long piece of plastic tubing of 1/2 inch/13mm diameter or larger before you reattach it to your boat, I think it will be more comfortable to carry the boat. Rope, of the diameter that you used, cuts into the hand quite badly. You could also drill out the center of a wooden dowel to make the materials more consistent if you wanted to keep everything pretty. Last week when I mentioned the Pirogue from the Cajun South here in America, I told you how they used metal rods pushed into the mud to stabilize the boat for fishing and hunting. Well, your ingenious way of mounting a bicycle seat to the boat offers the perfect place to drill a hole through its stem and the boat's bottom to shove a rod out the bottom of the boat and into the mud, then remount the seat. You're a wizard! See ya next Friday. Ciao!
