Why Russian Balls?
Russian Balls are bottom heavy due to only being partially filled with salt, sand, or something else. This characteristic makes them good for foot catches, neck catches, chin catches, and all other types of body catches. Some people (including myself) think they are easier to catch because of their low center of gravity; however, you will not know until you try! Homemade Russian Balls can be fun because you are able to try new methods and weights to see which you like best rather than depending on some company to decide which size and weight is best for you.
Play Pit Balls:
Play pit balls can be found at most Target, Wal-Mart, or other big box store, but if you cannot find them here, buying online will be your best bet. Be sure to know what size you are getting before you buy them and estimate the size that you think you want. The quality and thickness of play pit balls vary; however, I have been fairly lucky with the ones that I have purchased in the past. It depends on the brand but I have usually been able to buy 100 play pit balls for $8-13. Cheap, right? Good luck!
About Wiffle Balls:
These balls are baseball sized wiffle balls with no holes that are made with thick plastic, which make them exceptionally durable. I know people who have made these exact balls and they have lasted for YEARS. Their durability makes them worth your money. You can buy them individually or by the dozen. One dozen is $16.25. If you buy enough balls, they start to give you a little discount for buying in bulk. I bout 5 dozen and paid $90.55 with shipping (to Minnesota from Connecticut) to give you some kind of idea. So yes they are "expensive," I suppose, compared to play pit balls, but remember, they don't break! Depending on what you are used to, they can be thought of as "big," but as I have found, most people do like fairly large balls. Yes, I know this is funny... Juggling humor...
Where to buy the exact Wiffle Balls I bought:
shop.ctstore.com/store/pc/view...
Suggested Soldiering iron if you don't have one:
www.amazon.com/60-Watts-Solder...
or
www.amazon.com/60Watts-Profess...
or you can pick your own out!
The success of your homemade Russian Balls will depend on the type of balls you buy (unless they are the Wiffle Balls, these are very standard) as well as your own craftsmanship. Good luck making your very own Russian Style Juggling Balls. Happy Juggling!

I'm really liking the idea of the wiffle balls. I had some 67mm 100-140 grams homemade ones, I've made like 40 of those, but they always end up breaking. I've given up on russians and gone back to Bean Bags. the only thing I've really cared about in a ball is durability. Thanks for the idea :D

Nicely done, I have been thinking about doing something with the wiffle balls. My buddy has made Russians with them and you are correct, they last forever. Like the idea of the file, I didn't think of that. Thanks.

+Mhammad Oudeh - Are you making play pits balls and wiffle ball balls? Or are you just wondering if each ball should weigh the same?

+Fil( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Right on man, good luck! You should also try the method of drilling a hole into the ball with a drill bit (3/8 inch or so) and then cover the hole with a square piece of white electrical tape. I've been working with a set with this method and it works well. Keep me posted!

HI Phil, Great video. Thanks for sharing. 1 question. Does salt has expiration date? Will it might start smelling after being trapped inside a ball for years ?
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 9 лет назад
Satwinder Setia Salt doesn't "expire." I wouldn't recommend using the salt from the inside of the ball after juggling it for 20 years, but it won't make your house smell or anything :P Glad you enjoyed the video!

Great video, I need a ball that is similar to the whiffle balls but is bigger than the baseballs. And smaller than the softball sized. They need to be the thicker wall'd ball. Do you have any advice?
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 9 лет назад
jonathanrootcom A ball bigger than the Wiffle Balls? What for? They are already pretty large. I thought they sold softball wiffle balls but as you said you don't want them that big. To find something that is thick and is in-between these sizes is going to be a challenge. I'm not familiar with something that would fit your description, sorry!
@jonathanrootcom
@jonathanrootcom 9 лет назад
I have, have made and currently juggle the Softball sized ones. The baseball ones are way too small for stage, and the softball ones are just a touch too big for what I like. There's only one real trick I can't do with softball sized ones. But I miss that trick. Anyways if you come across something in the 3.5 inch range please let me know.

These balls were discontinued since the vid was put out :( anyone find any good ones?
@ixuvia
@ixuvia 10 лет назад
With the play pit balls that you use, are they the kind that crumples easily when you press on them or do they just flex a little? All I could find in-store is the crumpling kind which seem quite flimsy, so I may have to do some online shopping for 'crush proof ones'...
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 10 лет назад
They flex a little bit but they are fairly sturdy as far as play pits go, however, i would strongly suggest the wiffle balls

i dont have that filler thing to smoothen the plastic, plus am using the cheap play pit balls, and if i use something hot am worried the plastic might melt? and if i was to buy the proper wiffles and that equipment i might aswell buy the plug and play russians? with a special plug thing, they also got very bright colours and are very durable, some are even water filled but you cant open those...
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 8 лет назад
+Marius Kajanas If you are careful and only heat the balls for short periods of time, the ball should remain in tact. I like the feel of these better than plug and play russins, but you are correct, you could just buy those. Thanks for the comment, Marius. Sorry I didn't see this earlier!
@marka112

+Phil Thompson no worries, thanks for the answer! also do you use norwiks? theyre the same idea... 75mm and 67grams of sand... ?
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 8 лет назад
Marius Kajanas No problem! I have never tried Norwiks before, but I would like to try them at some point
@marka112
@marka112 8 лет назад
+Phil Thompson also, what other way can i measure the amount of saly i put in? like a cup? any ideas, havent got any scales, also am getting 80cm playpits, would 70grams be to much, i mean norwiks are 67, am aiming for light balls as heavy ish balls just kill my patterns after 20mins :D...?? cuz 90g for a small playpit (6cm ?) seems more than half?
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 8 лет назад
+Marius Kajanas Well if you want to be accurate then I would buy a scale. They aren't very expensive. I suppose measuring could potentially work, but I wouldn't recommend it. I'm not sure about those ball you were talking about either; as long as they don't wobble, you can go the weight you were talking about. I would just make one first and throw it around a bit to see if it works.
@Sandalwoodrk
@Sandalwoodrk 9 лет назад
can there also be problems if its a little too heavy?
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 8 лет назад
+Sandal wood Hmm, not that I am aware of. It kind of defeats the purpose of being a russian ball if its much more than a 1/3 or 1/2 full, or at least it does in my opinion

isnt 90g very light? i filled mine with 130g
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 8 лет назад
Depends a bit on the size of the ball. If they are too light, they have the potential to wobble. If they're too heavy, they lose some of the properties that make Russians worthwhile in the first place. In the end, it comes down to preference.
@azzorzer
@azzorzer 8 лет назад
Phil Thompson i use 6.5mm with 130g but i used to use 130g gballz so im used to them so i guess thats why
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 8 лет назад
6.5cm? I wouldn't be afraid of trying something lighter. Thats one of the benefits of russians, they can be lighter! It does take getting used to, but it definitely cuts down on fatigue after long practices.
@azzorzer
@azzorzer 8 лет назад
Phil Thompson thanks for the tip! i just made a set of 7 balls and filled them with 100grams each and i can already tell they're so much better, they dont fall as hard in your hand and it feels like they dont fall as quick as the heavier balls does.

nice video. Is there a reason you use salt instead of sand? Seems if a seal breaks it would leak or get moisture in quicker than with sand with a slightly larger grain. Also, crossing borders with a ball containing any white colored substance is an invitation to get hassled. Yes, customs officials are stupid and will suspect drugs... Also, what are your experiences using glue instead of soldering? I have used hockey balls for years but filled them with rice so they are not nearly so "dead" as with a heavier, finer grain substance. The ball themselves are also heavier than whiffle balls (which aren't available in Europe to the best of my knowledge) which make the dynamics of them different - again it means they are less deadened by the filling. The advantage is that one can still do body roll contact moves. The disadvantage is that they roll away; less than a solid ball but more than a Russian or beanbag. But I sometimes teach beginner workshops and the people are running all over the place after the balls. I don't like beanbags and see that play-pit balls are incredibly cheap. So now I want to try Russians. With hockey balls, I often found them made out of various types of plastic. Some lasted for many years having been sealed with a hot glue gun or with 2-part epoxy. Others didn't bind well with these or any other glues. The best ones I found are no longer made. Your video answered the question for me how it might be possible to melt in a piece of plastic but I wonder if some gluing methods aren't easier and just as effective?
@mistergolfer7
@mistergolfer7 9 лет назад
Tom Bolton I only use salt because it was in my house already. As long as the balls don't get moisture in them, they don't seem to have issues with clumping up or anything. The only "glue" I have used is hot glue, though I realize that isn't exactly what you meant. I do want to try some in the future though to see what happens with some stronger stuff. I saw street hockey balls in the store once and wanted to try them out but never got around to getting some. If you do try it let me know how it goes!
@biggclown
@biggclown 9 лет назад
Phil Thompson Thanks for the responce, I did actually mean hot glue which I have had good results for some balls and not others depending on the plastic.
