How to make Russian Style Juggling Balls Tutorial
WHERE TO GET PINS: I went to a local hardware store and they were 35 cents a piece. This is nice if you only want to get a few but if you want to buy in bulk (multiples of 50) use this link. If you buy one pack it is 21 cents per plug and if you buy two packages the shipping only goes up slightly so you only pay 17 cents per plug. I used a 3/16 inch drill bit for a 1/4 (4/14) inch plug. This means that you must push it in but it is nice and tight once it is on the ball.

Russian Juggling Balls: This type of ball is excellent for body stalls like on your neck or foot. Also, when these balls are dropped they don't roll away very far because the have a very low center of gravity due to being only partially filled with sand or salt. As I said in the video these balls are surprisingly durable and great to use. The play pit balls I purchased were 65mm or 2.5 inches I believe, and are great for numbers juggling.
Good luck and thanks for watching!
A little about juggling
History: Juggling has been around for hundreds of years and was thought to be started by the Egyptians. A few decades ago jugging and jugglers were limited with what they could do because there was no effective way to communicate to other jugglers what exactly they were doing in a juggling trick. (remember there was no internet or video cameras back then) Then some years later the revolutionary system of Siteswap notation came out. Siteswap notation is a way of giving numbers to particular juggling throw heights and direction in order to be able to write down what juggling pattern was being executed. Siteswap caught on and it became easier for jugglers to improve because they could better learn new juggling tricks. Then the internet came on the scene, and jugglers everywhere began to talk and upload videos of everything that they were doing and juggling. Once people see that someone else can do it they realize that they can too and thus the juggling community improved dramatically.
There are many great jugglers out there that people look up on RU-vid and elsewhere. Guys like Jason Garfield and Anthony Gatto are just two men that have changed the world of juggling. These guys have always been pushing the limits of gravity, creativity, and possibility.
If you want to buy juggling props or any other things juggling related check out the WJF (world juggling federation) store online to find some great things. The world juggling federation has done an amazing job over the last decade to advance juggling and make it more popular around the world check out the WJF and see if you can go to the next competition! Also look at the videos by the WJF for some juggling inspiration and motivation.
Common siteswaps in juggling include 7531, 97531, 534, 645, 53, 441, (6x,4)*, 51, 71, 91, 744, 7441, 5551, 615, 714, 663, 771, and many many more.
Good Luck!

If I can hold of pins, this would be the quickest way to make juggling balls. Let's see, if I can get them. Thanks dear for sharing.

Hey Phil, thanks for your video! I made my own Russian juggling balls today and they are awesome. I couldn't find such locking plugs in my local hardware store, so I got normal "non-locking" 6mm plugs which work amazingly good with a 5mm hole.

Awesome! I have come up with some slight modifications in order to make the balls more durable. I still juggle them though, they are awesome!

Stefan Peters I put some hot glue on the plug as it went in so that the plug is even more secure. Also, i put some hot glue over the plug once i put it in and then put a strip of tape over the plug so the hot glue bonds to the tape. So twice hot glued and the triple taped. I like the texture it has. If you have seen any of my more recent (better) videos you will know what they look like!

Oh one more thing, halfway through the last ball I ran out of the salt I was using, some kind of wacky 33% less sodium salt, and had to switch to larger-grain pickling salt, and discovered unexpectedly that the first kind of salt filled up the ball a LOT more than the second, with the same amount of weight. The more filled the ball the better, since they make less noise and they feel more solid in your hand. So, if you can find salt that says "33% less sodium", I recommend using that.

Anything you like to use on the inside is up for experimentation. Ive been dinking around with a soldering iron as a way to seal up the ball instead of using a plug. I havent found a perfect way to do it yet but i will keep trying. If i get a really cool method that _works_ I will make another video! Thanks for checking out the video! Keep juggling man!

I did this! They feel great. I think when I make my next set I might go with 3 ounces, they feel a little heavy to me. This seems much cleaner than the hot glue gun method. But for anyone going to do this: be patient, it took me about two hours to finish my set of four balls.

2 hours to pour some salt in a hole and plug it?😂

If you don't fill them all the way, they won't fly true, will they. They seemed to work pretty well for you at the end of the video though.

A plug is a plug. Give it the right hole and it will go wherever you want it.

Can you use sand instead of salt? I want to make these for kids in other countries and I can't send food, salt is categorized as food.
