DIY Rust Removal Hammerite Kurust Rust Treatment & Rust Inhibitor Application & Reaction Video

In this video I treat a base panel of a has heater which has started to show early signs of rust (see link in description for Kurust). I want to treat the rust to stop it effecting any more metal and provide a solid base to paint further Hammerite paint over. To Treat the rust using Hammerite Kurust you need to remove as much paint and rusted metal as possible, trying to achieve a flat smooth finish of which to apply the Kurust rust treatment to. As the area I was treating was small and has awkward access I choose to use wire brush attachments to strip the paint back to bare metal and remove the rust. A grinder or flap / abrasive disc would be better but access is limited on this occasion.
Once the paint and rust is removed, apply the Kurust with a clean brush, I probably apply a little too much while making sure I had good coverage, its not a problem but it will start to eat into any paint that has not been stripped so be careful when applying.
After leaving the Hammerite Kusurt rust treatment to dry for about an hour, the reaction should be complete and the metal should have turned to a blue/black colour which is not fully protected from further rust as Kusust is a full rust inhibitor.
I paint over the Kusurt with just normal black Hammerite paint. I am more concerned about getting a think coating than having it look pretty as the metal plate being treated will not be seen at all when installed and I just want to ensure the metalwork is fully protected, if I was treating an area which would be visible, I would ensure the finish was carried out to a high standard (as can be seen on a sliding door repair on my youtube channer CamperConverter. Thanks for watching.

Update I painted straight over kurust after 3 hrs as it allows that says so on container and the nail polish did jack to old gloss so I used p60 sand paper and wire brush just to note the nail polish remover does clean fresh gloss off if you get it on your skin at least very cold tho

Ok I've just bought kurust in last hour ive noticed a small patch of rust on bottom behind edge of radiator so in order to remove old gloss around edge of where rust is ive got nail polish remover to see if that will help barring that I've got small wire brushes p60 sand paper really tough stuff and if it comes to it ive got a wire mini wheel that fits onto a cheap Dremel type tool to help abrade shall see how it turns out

Thanks for a great demonstration of the product, which I now know wil meet my needs but why didn't you take off the bracket at the bottom of the affected area? As its likely that there is rust left under there that will in time eat up ward and negate the effort you put in.

In hindsight I should have, this video was the first time I'd used it myself , I do also recommend Rustins rust remover, seems to clean up the metal nicely where-as this just tries to harden any rust left in the metal..

We've just been quoted over £800 for two slightly rusting sill replacements on our Citroen Xara Picasso. I don't think it's that big a job and I have used Kurust on radiators before.
@TheCampervanBuilder
@TheCampervanBuilder 5 лет назад
rust will always come back, especially on places like sills etc. The only way to be fully sure is to cut it out and replace but its ok for just surface pitting
@lolitre881
@lolitre881 5 лет назад
@@TheCampervanBuilder Hi, thanks for your reply. Seeing as this isn't a major job (like a cam belt for example) I saw no reaon to go throught the Citroen dealership as we usually do. We are instead getting the bad areas cut out and one sill which we will buy from a reputable outfit on eBay which can be sawn and welded to both areas via a very reputable mechanic with a history of good service. Just awaiting the labour charges but we thought £800 was a bit steep!!
@lukem9962

@@lolitre881 800 for cills is a rip off wire brush and this with some paint is totally fine as long as the metal is actually solid it'll buy you a few more years

if you remove all the rust then there is no point in using the rust converter since there is no rust to convert so just paint over the metal insted.

This product and every product like it so called rust converter is totally rubbish it doesn’t work the rust ALWAYS COMES BACK , the only way to stop rust permanently is sand it off with a flappy grinding disk till all the rust is removed then coat the entire area with epoxy resin them body fill over the resin sand and paint rust gone forever until it rust somewhere else lol 😂

You would have to dip in acid (phosphoric) to remove rust. Two or three days I expect. Otherwise “paint” on phosphoric, leave, repeat and wash off when you think you have removed it (or enough of it). I would still use Kurust after though.

yeah it's out of sight or I would have put a lot more effort in to make it neater but as its the base that sits on the floor of a van never to be seen again, I wasn't fussed about the neatness of the paint. Yes I should have removed the bracket too, hindsight ehh

Heat gun to a spray can? LOL, RIP your face and eyesight when the can blows up. The coverage gets more even and less runny if you COOL the spray cans in a bucket of ice water for half an hour, not if you HEAT them. You've got the concept completely twisted.
