Ah the Scorch Buster... never worry about burning your food again! Really though, this thing is simple, and makes cooking in the backcountry really easy and helps you not burn your food when cooking fancier meals from scratch.
I'll show you how it works and how to make one for cheap on your own.

AWESOME! JUST AWESOME! I used your idea to place my outdoor Sizzle-Q Grill on my gas kitchen stove! I worked like a charm the two can lids help prevent the hot spots from the burners on my grill allowing me to have an awesome grill on my stovetop! Thanks for the great idea! 👍🏻

Thanks Devon! I stopped your calzone video in the middle to go search for your scorch buster. Very cool! I'm going to go dig in the trash after I finish watching your calzones come to life. Thanks so much!!

Jacqui Blanchard that's awesome! You can buy them from backpackers pantry, but I think it's easier to just make it yourself. Cheers!

I wonder if a guy were to mark where the three pot stand arms contact the diffuser then cut out the notches with a dremal so it sits locked on to the stove.

I am so glad I've found a youtube channel that likes to cook in the back country. In this regard, we are kindred spirits.

That's a awesome idea man. I have scorch problems as well, not so much with the jetboil minmo though but you still have to keep an eye on it.

Jaxx Drinkwater thanks Jaxx. I've done very little cooking on a Jetboil.

It's also noteworthy that piece of can is rippled like some of the store bought scorch busters which say the rippling helps distribute the heat

I bet you can use a long rivit and sleeve it with metal tube to get the stand off for the pot. Just an idea to take a little weight off compared to the bolts.

I know this video is at least five years old, but I thought I would add this fact in case anybody is still watching: the warnings that come with the MSR pocket rocket say that using a diffuser can cause the gas canister to explode, in turn causing injury or death. It’s hard to imagine this happening. I’m guessing the risk is that the diffuser reflects back so much heat onto the canister that it overheats and expands the canister contents to the point of explosion. Anyone with useful/scientifically accurate information about this (or, heaven forbid, a relevant unfortunate experience) please comment.

I have an old Outback Oven that I use on a Coleman stove. The instructions warn you not to use on a canister stove because heat is directed downward.

I've read that a wrap around windscreen shouldn't be used with a canister stove because it may heat the fuel canister ,but I don't understand how this would direct the heat downward any more than a fry pan sitting directly on the stove. 🤔

Love the idea. However, I’d use rivets instead of nuts and screws. Less weight. Less things poking out.

Would you use a heat diffuser anytime you are baking in the backcountry? Does the fry-bake, because its heavy annondized aluminum, reduce the need for a diffuser?

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Can you use this with the JetBoil?

I'm wondering if just a round piece of carbon felt placed between the stove top and bottom of the skillet would work?

This is by far the best, Great job on sharing this !! Do you think this would work with the MSR Pocket Rocket ?
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 7 лет назад
yes! I didn't mention this in the video, but just be aware of how tall your stove is. The buster adds another element that can move and get knocked over. But Yeah it'll work.
@troywilliams159
@troywilliams159 7 лет назад
good idea. why not eliminate the stand offs and use a hand brake to bend three points of the edge up to create stand offs? then you only have the lid weight.
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 7 лет назад
Troy Williams yeah you could do that too. I've seen it done with a coat hanger too.

I had the msr one for my whisperlite. never thought of one with an adjustable stove. I'll find a can.
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 7 лет назад
Yeah a Whisperlite is where i've used one the most, mostly because the Whisperlite doesn't have a real simmer control. You can get really nice heat locked in on a simmer, especially when using a 4 season canister stove with a wind screen.

tell more about your frying pan, tpe of metal, size, wherd u get it etc. What do you use to hold it?

TheSCWildcat33 I did a review on the Frybake a couple weeks ago. Run through my past videos and you'll see my review. I use any pot gripper or little channel locks.

No, i've used them at school a few times. You can also get them from Backpackers Pantry. But it's easier to make it yourself. I like having it.
@btrswt35

wouldn't it be more efficient to have some holes in it to let the heat/flames through?
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 7 лет назад
David Mm that would defeat the whole purpose of the Scorch Buster. It's meant to spread the heat across the entire bottom of your pan. Which allows you to bake/fry with a smaller stove and a big pot.
@ferryvantichelen6521
@ferryvantichelen6521 2 года назад
How efficient is this? Does it take more time (and therefore gas) to boil water with the diffuser than without?
@deancunanan3053
@deancunanan3053 2 года назад
But you don’t use it for boiling water. Goal is to get that simmer or distributed(diffused) heat.
@ferryvantichelen6521
@ferryvantichelen6521 2 года назад
@@deancunanan3053 doesn't really matter what I am boiling right? Haha I am just wondering whether my gas tank will be empty more quickly when I use this to cook (simmer/boil/fry)
@lukekowald
@lukekowald Год назад
I’d say it would take more time and gas, @Ferry van Tichelen, as there is a lot of heat that would be lost in the gap between diffuser and pan.
