Great job, Leslie..... I knew if anyone could do it, you could! I just have a couple of suggestions tho'..... Once you get back home and have access to a sewing machine, you might put this on the mini and pin all the folds etc. in place, just like when someone is basting darts in a blouse. Then sew them in place & cut off the excess. Sewing them like that will make it far less work for when you're camping. Secondly, with it all in place again, measure how much wide elastic you would need to sew that all around the outside edge. That way you can just put the whole thing up in one pc. with the elastic to hold it onto the van. You could still add bungy cords and magnets for windy days, if you like, but it would be so much quicker to put onto the mini and would fit tighter, altho' it looks to me like you have a very good fit. If you want to carry it another step further, you could then sew a door inside for privacy.... It could be attached at the top and just dropped down and tied at the bottom, or you could use a zipper to zip it around as far as you like, just like in a tent. I would have never tho't to use a tent floor, so you're way ahead of me there, but I have tho't of using tent sides.... LOL Funny how one sees one thing & another sees something else, huh? You're a very creative lady! You husband must be proud of you! Thanks for sharing!

Could you add a piece of elastic around the cut edge? It might work well with the magnets.

Ohhhh... And if you have the rainfly you can clamp it to the van hatchdoor and stake it down at an angle to create privacy and shade. I'm going to try it.

Clever use of an old tent. The plastic siding around the back hatch is a pain - as you painted out, can't use magnets. I'm going to mess around with EZlifego mounting tape. Not sure it will stick to tent/screen material. We'll see...

I just sit in my screen tent! Or is this for sleeping? Not sure I’d feel secure sleeping with that on, I want my tailgate closed!

Leslie, We purchased a SUV tent that attaches right on the back of your van from Amazon that did NOT break the bank. Its from Ozark Tail (Walmart) was less than one hundred and fifty dollars. It is very tall and you can stand up in it and it does have a floor. You can take the rain fly off and use just as a screen tent attached to your van. You can also use as a stand alone screen tent of regular tent. I wouldn't use it for just one night but for two or three, it is worth your time.

I have an old tent! Now I just need the van ;) The fishing magnets are a great idea. I don't think there is any commercial tailgate tent out there that is 100% bug proof. They all have gaps somewhere. The tent fly, if still available, could be used as a sunshade/awning with some poles perhaps. One caution: don't put the tailgate tent on until the exhaust pipe and such has cooled down.

Have you tried this new idea in high winds yet? After it's set up with magnets, you could cinch it tighter to van with a ratchet strap from bottom of van all the way around (up the side, across top infront of gate and back down other side, hooked on edge of quarter panel.)

Don't know if I will ever get out there on road but planning anyway, cause praying I do. Will have to be super cheaply done. Was going to throw out some old curtains when realized seems same as screen so figuring out way to do as you have. Has bit of design but what the hey...thanks

I have a small vehicle. I bought a rectangular screen tent that I can set up OVER my car when camping in it. When I'm not camping, it's set up on my patio at home. I have tarps to cover the sides when I need privacy, stretching long bungee cords between the tent poles to hang them on. There are zipper openings on the long sides, so I sewed a magnetic screen door to one of the short sides and cut a slit. I think this would work on a van, too. I hope this helps someone. It was a fun project and gives me a little big free outdoor space, too!

Hi Leslie, this is genius and less expensive. Thank you for sharing this. If your tent has a hole you can use a suction cup cuz it has a hook to the tent and suction to your Van.

Neat idea. Another option might be to bring the tent poles along too. Some private campgrounds don't allow you to camp in just a van; they want you to at least have a tent set up. So maybe it could do double duty. (I realize it's missing the bottom so not sure how that would work)..
