Brilliant idea! 👌 I can't bring myself to pay the price for some of these punch sets. An I love the idea of Makin it myself. I have tried a few ways but this is. One of the best. But I do not have a metal lathe so I cannot try this one sadly 😔
If you put a rooftop grind (like a chissel but not nearly as steep) on the punch you will find that it punches through with much less force and you will have cleaner edges. Anywhere between 1 and 5 degrees will work.
I will try! When I made this I tried to put a chamfer in on one side of the punch but It was leaving me a rough surface in one side. I guess I did it wrong xD
I know this is old video from 2016 so not sure if you still make these rings but just got a hold of a lathe so wondering if you had the plans or you just kind of made them up as you went along? Great job.
Hi my friend! That is a nice question! My idea was to secure the two pieces with m4 bolts, threading the cylinders. And so I did! I made all the holes aligned and countersunk them but at the time of threading the holes I broke my bit... So I went and I bought a new one! But yet again I broke that one too :'( At that point I run out of time and I went for ca glue :'D It lasted for quiet some punch, but I will add bolts one day or another :) Thank you for the comment!
Wouldn't it be easier and faster to just drill a hole through the coin? Just one press from a drill press and you're done. Is there a reason a punch is preferred?
Hi N.ESS how are you? I found that drilling a right size hole in the dead center of a coin is really hard and take a lot of time! Also by holding the coin I saw always ruining the edge of the coin so that later on I had to grind the coin to make it flat. A punch like that let you punch a hole in 10 sec and you have a perfect edge to work with! Really mate I would like to show you how much my coin rigs have improved after this tool! :D And it takes me 1/3 of the time! Super happy with that :)
That makes sense, thanks for answering. I've never tried anything like this so I really had no clue. I can see how drilling perfectly centered might be difficult, especially with the uneven surface of a coin.
Damn true! Those are really expensive :( moreover I pretty much ruined the first tools I bought and I think that the same could happen to novice as me xD And that doesn't help either!
It might work if you find the right size socket and something to put inside it to stop the coin from bending :) A smaller socket maybe? Never tried anyway :)
My arbor press can't punch coin well :( I don't know how many tons is, I still have to use my vise to use this :') One day or another I'll make a proper press with a jack!
Haha! Thank for asking buddy! But I can't make more to sell :( I don't have the machining skill and the right tool for the job... But you can ask to a local machinist shop, I'm sure they won't ask much for something like this, probably less than how it would cost me to ship xD
Dude you are right I'm going to change the title to "DIY Self Centering Punch And Die Set for the man who has a shop and tools and skills etc.... not for the average joe" :'D DIY does not mean no tools required! :)
BBP: agreed, DIY doesn't mean no tools required~ but the resources you have access to is not within a average guys reach... just kinda disappointed that I can't actually DIY your DIY... much props to you man~!
No,you are wrong, with practice anyone can do it,why do you think so many people are taking this up as a hobby, you can get by with basic tools to start with, your going to mess up coins, but thats why you practice, and coins are cheap to buy, ebay sell them in bulk loads, even experts mess up the odd ring or two.
Sure I can :) Anyway I made this to fit the coin I use while the outside diameter was dictated by the stock material I had laying around. If you want to contact me in private I will send you a quick draw with measuere once I take them :)
