Any other suggestions on how to automate the irrigation of my capsicum plants are welcome. I am also looking for ideas to DIY the Aquavalve from Autopot. Any suggestions or ideas on this are more then welcome too. Have fun experimenting and go breed chilli peppers!
Eenvoudig bewateringssysteem voor je potplanten op onderschaal. Als iemand ervaring of ideen heeft om een DHZ/DIY aquavalve te bouwen van Autopot dan hoor ik dat graag...

bottom feeds the plants, which is actually an important thing to note. tends to force roots to dig down for water, creating healthy roots while keeping the upper root system dry. this allows for the gas exchange at the root zone, and let's the roots breath.

Hi Trisky, after the bottles are empty I give my plants some time to absorb and evaporate the water first. So as soon as the soil dries out, I refill the bottles.

Brilliant idea and so simple too. I have modified it slightly by using a deep tray and have plant pot raised up on a couple of tiles. I then have capillary matting in tray and bottle sitting on top of matting. As plant pot is raised up, it is not sitting directly in water, just on saturated matting.

Simple and extremely effective. I use strips torn from old bath towels and when I return from vacation, I wash, dry and store them for later use. I spread a large garbage bag on the ground, then I place a large tub of water in the center. I circle the plants around the tub of water and place the water wicks (toweling strips) in the water. I have one strip for each plant. Next, I take one end of a strip and wrap it around the base of each potted plant. The water will flow from the tub to the pots as needed. The water wicks acts as conduits. I’ve used this method for 50 years and it has never failed. Easy, no cost and effective. 👍🌶

For seedlings (in small pots) this proved to be prone to mould since they are in the water all the time. Very elegant idea though and I think for higher pots/bigger plants this will be fine.

But nevertheless forms waterlogging? Most plants can not always stand in the water yet. Maybe you can make the water bottle dan a dan drainage with clay pebbles and put the plants out. The expanded clay absorbs the water.

I would add some white stones in the tray and the plant containers can sit on them, with string for a wic. Don't let the pots just sit in the water.

Mosquitoes usually breed during the summer. You can use this method during the winter spring and autumn. Just make sure to water them manually during the summer and make sure there aren't any puddles around.

I think this is a much better system and idea of hydrating your plants and vegetables as it promotes deep root growth. the drip systems from the top don't encourage the plant to extend into the soil and thereby seek nutrients.

i created a video similar but you need electricity its more hydroponics applied, your idea its good and very simple what its a plus but wont the roots rot and try to fill the tray with water first and then add the bottle so you have more water stored.

@CommonZense
@CommonZense 8 лет назад
Hi Jason, this system should be used more like an ebb and flood method. As you don't want the roots of your plants to be soaked 24/7. Meaning that after the bottle reservoir is emptied, wait for a while depending on your plants evaporation before 're-fueling'. By doing so, using the correct methodology, mosquito larvae won't get a chance. And your plants roots system will be happy to oxygenate every once in while. Good luck.
@HusmanAhmed
@HusmanAhmed 8 лет назад
when you say "ebb and flow", do you mean that once the bottle is empty, you should leave it empty for a few days and allow the soil (and roots) to dry a little, before refilling?
@vaazig
@vaazig 8 лет назад
Yupp, exactly. Roots don't like sitting in saturated soil. It's different if you're wicking up the water though. Depending on what you're growing you might want it to suffer a bit as well like for example peppers and chillies. These are into S&M and stressing them makes them fruit a lot.

i love this idea so simple and u prove it works by the lovly looking plants u have in the system. Just 1 question, with ur pots always sitting in water how do u stop root rot! i was thinking about using about and inch of perlite in the bottom of the pot to wick the water up and stop the soil getting soaked! what do u think? I wish u luck for 2013with great yeilds!

I made the hole in the bottle too small and the water got locked inside until I turned the cap a little (it then gushes out). Once you turn the cap though, the effect is lost and it will spill over the edge. I guess there is a limit to the size of the hole and something to do with pressure. I would love to know what the scientific term for this is.

Great video - I tried this method as a vacation-solution and all plants are well. However, as some of my plants are in clear pots, I have noticed their roots changed to a darker colour - perhaps too much moist/light rot. Have you tried placing the pots on an absorbent material such as capillary matting or even regular towels? This could possible resolve the issue with submerged soil and the material would be supplied with water from the bottle. I am considering this solution for my next vacation - but better test it first.

Hi good evening After seeing this Vedio I have tried on my Areca Palm potted in 10" pot, it's great and on for the last two days, consumed very less water after its initial soaking. Good system. I want to seek your advice if I can put all my containers with different plants including Coleous for watering with your this system else which plants I can and which ones I shouldn't. I am a new Gardner just started on my terrace in last December/2017 only. I have noticed that the container's soil media remains wet/moist all the time Thanks for your real advice
@CommonZense
@CommonZense 6 лет назад
Som Tandon: plants that require less water should not be drained after the bottle has drained. So depending on the plant specie leave the pot 'to dry' for a while. In this case, make sure the pot is dry before you leave the house for a couple of days, so it has time to soak and dry back out while you are out... rgds.
@SOMY_4651

CommonZense Good morning Thanks for your reply with good advise, shall keep in mind For Coleus and less watering plants, any remidi?
@CommonZense
@CommonZense 6 лет назад
Som Tandon: if you are talking about propagating the coleus cuttings for root growth you need a higher water level right? Simply lengthen the cutting at the bottom of the water reservoir to the level of required water height. When talking about the maintenance of adult plants, I have no clue as I am not familiar enough with this this species water needs. Good luck.

In very hot summer vacation months, the water in a flat open tray tends to dry out very fast though. So this may be good for upto 10-15 days max. Not for extended vacation away from home. Also the wind will eventually topple the bottle if the plants are outside. Your thoughts?
@CommonZense
@CommonZense 5 лет назад
Add some stones or marbles to your bottle so wind won't flip it that fast.

I thought leaving water in the tray under a pot is a fatal mistake! Does this work only for plants that need lots of water and tolerate constant moisture maybe?
@jimmyk2646
@jimmyk2646 10 лет назад
If you guys are worried about the plants being in constant water just make the hole with a pin or something. Very small amounts will come out and most likely be absorbed quickly.

But what happens after those roots at the bottom have sat in water and drowned? Most wicking systems create an air gap with wicks to separate roots from water and allow moisture to pass to the soil. I bet after a week or two you've got gnats.
@moom1000
@moom1000 10 лет назад
good solution for hydroculture, but not so much for soil. soil would be way too wet if it constantly sits in water.
@ILOVENJ00

Put a piece of sponge or coco mat under the pots to raise them up but the moisture will still get sucked in as needed.

doesn't work in colder climates or during winter. where I'm at, the temperature of the water will drop significantly by the morning, even inside the house. gnats would jump on this right away, the roots will begin to rot etc
