DIY Self Wicking Gardening Containers. We use these in our garden. We fill up through the fill tube at the top. It goes down to the bottom and once the bottom portion is full, it will overflow into this hole on the side. When filled with water, the dirt will absorb the water and wicket to the top. Depending on the temperature you can go about a week before you have to refill it. I hope this video is helpful!

I don’t. I learned this from another RU-vidr. Lookup Leon self wicking buckets. He has many methods. This was one of them.

I don’t see why not. Just fill in the spaces so you don’t have too much dirt sitting in the bottom. You could put some milk bottles with tiny holes in the bottom to fill in the gap

This idea is taken from "Gardening with Leon". He has several videos showing his system, also with other solutions than draining pipe. Plus videos about how and what fertilizers to use. 👍

But what she doesn't say is you need to put landscape fabric over top of the piping so that the soil media does not go down into the pipe, she covered the ends that's great but the soil can still get down into the pipe through the holes that are all along it so you want to cover that with landscape fabric too

It is not necessary. The holes in the pipe are so small. This had been functioning extremely well during our extreme heat for well over a year.

Can I use bamboo sticks in place of the pvc pipe?

Bamboo would eventually break down in the soil.

@@hurrdurrmurrgurr Thank you for replying👍 I was trying to find a substitute for pvc pipe because of toxic plastics. If you know of any piping that is better than pvc please don't hesitate to share about it.

So far I haven’t had any issues. It’s only dirt and the plastic. Smells fine and it worked so well all year. This is my second year to use them. Happy gardening!!

That is not true. The whole idea is to have the potting soil wick water from the water reservoir. The air in the pipe above the drainage hole is what makes it work without rotting.

Yes, Leon makes different ways for self watering tubes. He makes his kinda this way if you watch his older video with tubing. He uses flower pots with holes/ open bottom, water jugs, pipe with no cover in and pipe with cover in and metal cans. He said to use what you got, which is smart.

Yes, I know it is not the same as Leon. But kinda some way, in different ways. He adds landscape fabric to his. His older video he shows you how milk jug and coke/ pop bottles to a container the same way you do yours. He has many ways of doing self-watering container.
