Hey Roger, Thanks for the step by step vid. You mentioned that all parts would be in the description however it looks like you've only included likes to fishing gear. Where can I find more info on the materials used like outlet pipe, etc? Thanks again
The video is amazing, but I am also looking for the part list, which Roger mentioned around 4:30 in the video. The link above brings us to his fishing products.
Thank you - not only are these great wicking beds at a good height but the extra thought that went into the wooden exterior really makes them great. I am a beginner handyperson so I appreciate the breakdown of the steps ie marking out the screw position. Brilliant video!
wow thanks! I've just finished watching a few videoes on wicking beds. Your video is fabulous. You've covered everything easily and the finished product is beautifu. 🌻🌿
Thank you for your video. You did two things a lot of others do not. Firstly, you showed your actual water level relative to the felt membrane. That is very helpful to me as I am at that exact stage and as a result will be elevating my drain line ever so slightly prior to adding soil. Secondly, I really appreciate the follow up segment at the end of your growing season. It’s really nice to see actual results from a wicking bed. Thanks again.
Roger, l recently became an Angler, Beach Wormer, Fish Filleta & Cook, thanks to you. Now, l'm a Builder, Gardener and Farmer. Can't wait for your next videos. Seriously, thanks for this informative great idea and video.
Couldn't help but notice on you beach worming website that you wore a manly sea eagles hat and you are a chef for them. GO MANLY SEA EAGLES! Love all you videos mate and they are so useful
Good Onya Roger. I wish I would have seen your instruction video last year when I tried planting in bathtubs Out at my farm I only get to visit my farm once a week , its 100klm from my house. The dry weather played havoc with my gardening ambitions . I will have to make a few of these so the veggies can water themselves
Hey Roger, Been on the to so list for a while now. So it's time! Can I please get a list of equipment used. I can't seem to find it attached to the video. Thanks in advance!
What a great video! Very professional and such clear instructions. We are in the process of putting our IBC beds together using your instructions. Thanks so much 👍
Great video Roger and a great idea to create something DIY like this- i.e. when not fishing ;) Loved the video. I have seen many garden bed Diy videos, but never seen one being made from a PPE container. Kudos!
Somehow I luckily found your video... I watch and live for my favorite woodworkers and craftsmen yet you built the best garden bed that I’ve seen so far 👏🏽 You came up with a brilliant way to not only properly and efficiently grow a veggi garden without wasting water, you more importantly (to me) solved a very common issue when building outdoor structures of any kind with wood and especially wood built garden beds and that is limiting the need to rebuild or repair every few years once the wood rots! I think this is brilliant and will be sharing with everyone ik who gardens because this is a huge money saver initially but also long term as well considering limited wood contact to water 👍🏼👍🏼 Thank you for sharing the full build
@@RogerOsborneFishing have to give you an update… I finally found a guy I can buy food grade and safe ibc totes and I was able to get one home. I’d love to have the same shape garden like yours, seems perfect in size and shape for a full garden but I could only fit one in the truck I was borrowing but I’m sure he’ll have more in the future for me. I paid $80 and they were used to store dog food grade salmon oil… so much fun scrubbing that thick oil out but well worth it!
This is a great video! Sophie Thompson on Gardening Aust has info about wicking ibc beds, but I like how in your video, you explain the finer details. Thank you! 😁
Absolutely excellent what a fantastic holiday hopefully the sitting around on the farm definitely gonna have to give it a go thank you very much for sharing unfortunately I don’t do sea fishing all the best Andy UK
you need a column of soil that goes to the bottom of the reservoir otherwise you loose the wicking effect after the water drops below the soil contact. Also the roots do not wick the water up it is the medium just like a piece of T shirt will wick up water. Please look at other that are doing this. If you do this way you will be disappointed
Hi Jay, thanks for the tips. My gardens are doing really well, we have been enjoying some great harvests. I agree with what you say, you obviously have some experience in this area. I will make some adjustments the next time I change a bed.
Hi Rodger Thank you for your video on wicking beds, it's the best. But do you actually have a list of equipment/supplies needed to makeyour wicking beds., And what part of the wicking bed each supply/piece of equipment is for?
Great video! You could probably connect the run off pipes up to a pvc pipe & drain into a small sump tank, then reuse the water to pump back into the beds.
Hi Roger, I have watched many videos detailing various wicking bed materials and construction and yours is by far the easiest and cheapest. Thank you. Can you provide an update on how the beds have performed since you created this video? Thank you.
Am in the process. Watched MANY videos. Yours is the best. I live on a hill, to put it mildly. Would need a lot of soil to level. So I put 2 pallets down. Leveled them. Then put the containers and frames on the pallets. Am now moving on to the wood trim. I bought used fencing panels for this (5 feet of 6 foot panels for $5 each). Will get two rows of pickets from each panel, even after I trim off the dog eared tops and rotted bottoms. Thanks for your video!!
nice video.....I am going to build a very similar bed, however I am in Wisconsin, USA so will install a drain as we freeze in the winter. Thank you, bob
You said all the details were in the description box but all I see are links to fishing stuff. That's great and all, but I want to know about wicking bed stuff.
Probably the most down to earth wicking video ive seen so far, welldone mate. Question - I assume that hand watering is required until plant roots take depth to reach the water level/geomesh?
Hi Roger , just found your channel and really like it. As a complete amateur fishermen just curious about your Pilchards as bait. So when you buy a frozen pack from the local servo of fish shop what do you do next be frost some? Do you treat the pilchards in any way such as salt them. Do you break off a chunk to go fishing with and leave the rest of the block frozen and in the freezer. Have learn heaps Roger and thanks for the great tips.
Hi Steven, just saw your comment. If you drop a block of pilchards several times on to a concrete floor or driveway they will begin to break apart. I generally don't take a whole block with me but just what I think that I need for that particular fishing trip. That way your bait is kept in best condition. Cheers.
@@RogerOsborneFishing I did manage everything. In Restrictions it was bit difficult to judge what exactly you need from Bunnings. I have built the wicking bed with one slight issue. My wicking bed leaks even though I put sealant in. And to make matter worse all my veggies are in, so bit of dilemma as to how to manage my water management issue. Is there any stronger sealant you can suggest that can do the trick.
Great video Rodger, just starting to construct my beds and would like to know if the lids are water tight or do they need to be sealed. Cheers Chris A “Tin Can Bay”
Hi Chris, No the bottom layer is to work as a water reservoir and needs to stay that way with the geodesic cloth separating the soil from the bottom layer.
I've built several wicking beds but I don't understand how yours will be able to wick water when the water level drops below the top of your gravel layer. You need a finer medium, such as sand in contact with the soil layer and bottom of your reservoir. Gravel will not wick moisture.
Hi Roger - as you don’t have wicking towers as such how does the water get transferred from amongst the pebbles through the echo cloth into the soil, especially when the water level drops a few inches? 2nd question: as the water resides amongst the pebbles is the coiled drainage piping at the bottom not superfluous? Many thanks!
This was so helful thankyou for this video. We have built a planter box on our new deck and were wanting to set it up as a herb garden. Do you think we shoukd set it up as a wicking bed or is it not necessary for herbs?
Do you have a section of the soil going fairly low down into the sump? Just so when the section of water gets lower than the top of rocks wont wicking stop?
Hey mate quick question im about to start building my wicking beds one problem ive noticed is the drain pipe not handling a large downpour of rain and flooding the bed I was thinking of making the drain pipe out of 100mm pipe and having the lower bit of the 100mm pipe set at the correct height for overflow and using small amount of rock wrapped in geo fab around the pipe and using sand as the wicking material do you think this would work cheers
Great vid. Can you use the tap that comes on the IBC as the drainage outlet? One half will have the tap, so just wondering why you'd need to install a new drainage outlet. Couldn't you attach an elbow to the IBC's tap, and use that instead?
Hi Tanya, The tap in the center of one half of the IBC would be at the base which is on the ground and not accessible once filled. The tap needs to be at the height of water level that you want to maintain. It needs to be on the side.
The soil gradually compacts down and the plants use the nutrients. After each crop I add more organic material as necessary, like compost, seaweed, manure etc. You also need to rotate crops depending on what you are growing.
Hello there. I am in the processing of building a wicking bed. I am wondering what material is the best for the water reservoir? Sand or rock? I looked at getting lava rock and it is hard to find or verrrry expense. Please advise as I want to make the bed correct the first time. The bed is 8x4
Hi Roger. I'm Struggling to understand the purpose of the ag line. Water will fill the blue metal reservoir without it, so it is not for filling. But I can't see what else it could be for
