As I'm doing an masters in Textiles I feel like I have some authority on the science. I don't want to put you down by saying its really not complicated but it is also ridiculously simple. You've heard of polyester, well that's a thermoplastic polymer and the most common polyester in textiles is PET (poly(ethylene terephthalate)), there are other types like PLA (poly lactic acid) which is made from corn. The science of PLA manufacture is more complex than converting PET bottles into PET fibres. PET bottles are made of the same polymer as PET fibres. All you got to do is collect the bottles, chemically clean them, chop them up and melt them down. Then you can melt spin them and extrude them as fibres. This is a common process for polyester apparel fabrics cause it is cheap and also there is a degradation in polymer strength, meaning you cannot recycle them back into PET bottles but you can recycle it into PET fibres for apparel fabrics. Chances are that thread international is just using a lower linear density (finer fibre/yarn) of PET than other manufacturers. It won't feel as scratchy as an acrylic because its not an acrylic. It may seem a bit superficial to say these don't feel the same because they are different fibres but that is a surprising amount of textiles, different fibres offer different properties especially in terms of comfort. Also thank you for pointing out that cotton is not a sustainable fibre. Cotton agriculture uses 25% of the world's pesticides and 11% of the world's insecticides. It likes to grow in climates that are hot and dry, these often have the low annual rainfalls but guess what cotton needs a lot of? You guessed it water. To grow 1 kg of cotton you need 20,000- 40,000L of water (how much water we need in our entire lifetime). If you think organic cotton is better because it doesn't need pesticides and insecticides you'd be wrong. Organic cotton requires 1.5 times the land and 1.5 times the water to grow the same amount of cotton. The Aral sea an landlocked sea is almost completely dried up due to it be used to irrigate cotton. For my masters I had to do a lovely charming essay on cotton dyeing and let me tell you the textiles industry is terrible. 70 - 150 L of water is needed to process 1 kg of cotton, at least 70% of that water gets contaminated with effluent aka dye stuff and salts and if not treated will damage water ways and can be carcinogenic. Sometimes in the case of direct dyes or reactive dyes the way that they treat it makes it go from not great to toxic to a definite carcinogen. By making the effluent colourless by breaking down the dye molecule and releasing the azo bond. Which is really really bad, but don't worry about 60-70% of factories don't treat their water. So yeah cotton is terrible, polyester in many ways in terms of environmental impact is better. If you want to have a sustainable cellulose use viscose or lyocell. They are much better for the environment, also you probably own some clothes that contain viscose as my lecturer who worked in cotton mills said they often put viscose in as chemically they virtually the same. So yeah, thanks for reading my textiles rant. Also cool skirt.

Also, I did forget to mention in the video - you can create additional slits, for example if you wanted 2, by cutting straight up the skirt where you want the other slit to be... and then you can hem the edges of it like I did in the video, or just leave them! 😘

My friends have a company they started in late 2016 after graduating from the London College of Fashion called Know The Origin. The brand was designed with transparency in mnd and to get people thinking about where their clothes come from. At the moment they only do basics but all the clothes are sustainable and ethical and it's just an all round good brand for completely transparent fashion so it's a good place to check out if you're looking into more sustainably sourced fashion brands.

We learned about it in AP Environmental Science, I don't know if this company does this, but basically they shred it down ( or do something else???) and create plastic like flakes which is like a plastic fiber ( literally like plastic cotton ) which you can spin into a thread just like regular cotton. Its a great thing and really helps protect the environment and people from MELTING plastic bottles because although recycling is good, plastic bottles are made up of petrochemicals using different types of like chemical makeups (something like that?) and when mixed together can potentially be hazardous to not only humans but the environment. It also uses less water because its not creating the plastic and growing it like you would with cotton, its simply just recycling it :). Its super cool! Forgive me Environmental Science majors if I got some information wrong!!

Hey, I noticed that Thread International has some dye-ready fabrics. I'm not sure dying fabric is something you're interested in, but I would love to see it, especially since their fabrics (while very cool) don't come in that many different colors/patterns

It's insane how many clothes people have! I've reduced my wardrobe recently to about a quarter of what I owned and donated the rest to refugees living in my state. I was completely floored by how much I actually had, yet I still felt like I never had enough! I can comfortably live with and maintain a quarter of what I had. Donating clothes and reducing my wardrobe has also affected my shopping too. I don't shop much anymore because I've been appreciating my wardrobe so much more. My in-laws accept clothing donations from their neighbors and they get hundreds of pounds of clothes. It's wild how many clothes are never used and go to waste.

ROFL thank you for leaving in your dog's accident. It made me feel so much better about everything that has happened since we became indoor cat people. They pounce on patterns while I try to pin them down, and for a while went on a spraying spree in my craft room (yes, they're fixed). So much extra fabric washing! UGH. Anyway, a lot of times I just give up and take my projects to my parents' house but that is really inconvenient. Between my 5 year old and the kitties it seems like there is no way I can make things anymore.

Some ribbed jersey is awesome for cleaning glasses. You can take some of those scraps and cut them up into squares and give them to your bespectacled friends. That way, fabric is staying out of the landfills and something useful is being made. :)

When sewing a waistband, first sew together the ends and then the sides, this way the seam that connects the circle will be inside the waistband and won't be visible.

Whenever I cosplay I go to the thrift store for everything. Right now I am using two shirts to make one, a recycled jacket, salvaged sequence and more. It's cheaper, easy and good for the environment. Only downside is looking for the right materials lol

Due to supernova coming up, and I'm the only one in my family who can sew, I've been making all the costumes for myself and those who want to go. I always take my family out to op shops when first getting materials, seeing what fits and what we can modify, it's super fun and really cheap; also helps out the community. After that I go through fabric I do have and make as much as possible from it, this year it was a pleated shirt, 2 bandanas and a tunic. Stuff like this is not only fun but great for the environment, makes a day to go out and find hidden treasures, I completely recommend!

Just a tip if you're in the US/Canada and don't like using your fabric scraps: H&M accepts household textiles, including fabric scraps, for recycling! They send it to a company that will either repurpose the fibres for new fabrics, or use them for making insulation and other products.

To be honest Annika is the only youtuber, that actually shows her mistakes and fixes them, shows that we don't have to be perfect. She makes me feel more motivated and comfortable to try project even if they fail! usually all other channels, they seem like pros so I always feel like I would never be able to do the same, but Annika makes it look fun and easy to try new things!!

I got my first sewing machine for christmas and while I mostly use it for making plushies, i've started getting into making my own clothing (I took two shirts and put them together to make a striped shirt, and made a really awkward rectangle-circle skirt so far). I'm going through my faves of your videos for inspiration on what to make with the 3.5 yards of t-shirt like material i got. (I'm used to getting soft felts and fleeces, so trying to find good Tshirt material was really hard!!!!!)

Thread international sound really cool. I'll have to check them out. So glad you are not throwing away your scraps. My mother and I found a local group that takes fabric scraps (no matter how small) and uses them as stuffing in dog beds that are then donated to local animal shelters. Please encourage your audience to find some way of putting those scraps to use. Newer sub here, loving your channel.
