so it turns out you can easily build a little furnace or kiln for free from an old space heater. although i cant know for sure about its temperature until i get a thermocouple in there to measure directly.
That cord was wrapped in a way that when you pull it it all comes undone but as cool as it looks is one of the worst ways to wrap cords. Loose coils are the best way and not twisted and there are ways to coil so you can throw it to uncoil it called "over under"
This nichrome wire is fun to play with. I was toying around with a furnace idea last week using this stuff. I'm surprised it didn't break without the fan cooling it. Great video.
I am genuinely surprised seeing how easy those little scissors snip those wires. Knife I had was rubbish, metal was as soft as aluminum. Now I understand why you like that knife so much :)
Got a Tinker myself around the same age and at 34 it still rattles around my pocket and has the battle scars to prove the number times of its been indispensable though the scissors are getting hard to operate b/c a mixture of gooey material that no solvent seems to want to shift has gotten into it's hinge area and the spring for the pliers is missing completely (along with the tweezers and toothpick that fell out somewhere along the way lol) because it broke so I used a pin punch to drive the remaining piece from it's holder after almost cutting myself on it a couple times. Thing's literally saved my bacon more than once fixing things like a blown off radiator hose from a failed clamp when I was away from home and hadn't any proper tools in the car but could get a lift from the friends house I was near to the parts store for a new clamp and a gallon of coolant.
That cable was wrapped like how you could pack the last bit of say paraglider lines or something that you can easily pull it and it comes apart untangled. You do it by pulling a loop within the last loop and repeat.
It's called a daisy chain the way the cord was wrapped up it consolidates space and you should only have to pull from the plug and it will come all unraveled
I'm not even into electronics and stuff like that but your channel is great because you can sit back and relax while watching you talk about random things. I find it relaxing.
when you see plastic wood effect on steel, you know its both fashionable and top quality (date from about late 70s, i had a car charger with the same finish on it!)
Perfect use for your knife switch. Some years ago I was into home foundry stuff. I poured a furnace with grooves around the sides and put elements similar to yours in it. I could melt aluminum in it and where earlier I used a charcoal furnace, the electric could be used indoors. Very handy. I can see you getting refractory material in the future and pouring one to your specs. Once again Rin,,, well done.
That works very well. In fact, the coils are the easiest part of this. You can get the Nichrome wire cheaply and form the coils to your exact needs very easily.. Before it's heated the wire is easily coiled around a dowel or other shape to form a coil. Once heated it becomes more stiff. I built a kiln for copper enameling and it worked quite nicely. Could get the interior to a bright yellowish-orange (hotter than I needed, I forget the temp). The fire bricks are key -- they keep the heat in. You can hold them together with refractory cement. "Sairset" Iirc.
BixbyConsequence yes ive already made a tiny furnace out of nichrome wire a long time ago. i didnt really go anywhere with that series because i didnt have time. i should soon though.
be careful not to damage your thermal sensor with too high temps. mine has a permanent shadow in it due to filming a candle for too long (the software adjusts for it, but still, one day it will be damaged to much to compensate)
i dont really care about this camera too much, i plan to get a better one someday. so i kinda see it as a tool that can be broken. but thanks for the tip.
I would have personally used the warm and hot knob to control your temperatures and I never got to hear you say how hot it got that would have been nice to know how hot that little thing got
RC MAD well i dont know how that would happen because if i was pulling it was be away from it...but lets assume this is some weird 4 spacial dimensional universe, it would still just be a 120v ac shock. it would be a firm reminder to be more careful, and not live in 4 spacial dimensions. lol
I saw a dude's youtube video where he was instructing people how to wrap their extension cords like that... cuz then you can use it as a short cord without a bunch of extra tangled cord on the floor, or extend it and use it as a longer cord again.. seemed to make sense when I watched the video, but apparently not worth the effort as I forget what the method was exactly. PS your hair is silky smooth.
The method Is loop over loop and I use this method primarily because the cord extension will last longer this way and far more easier to untangle. As you pull the end of the cable it simply untangle it self.
Why don't you use a light switch in a j box instead of the breaker like that? the heat strip is a common item to find in heat pump heating and air furnaces . I'll give you another something you may try the compressor of a heat pump has a band around it at the bottom. it's called a crank case heater. this would be a more likely burn out . the heatstrips in certain pieces of appliances will run at a constant without burning out. but don't ever let one of those coils lay over and touch to itself . that will give you the burn out your looking for.
a good alternative use, pretty ingenious, however i would say that big switch is super dangerous (very cool looking though) like what if a cat rubbed up against it, or you tripped and touched it.
no its not super dangerous. if the cat touches it then it will be given a swift reminder of why not to. and just dont trip. tripping is the fault of going too fast. as soon as i make a system live like this i slow down a lot so i can be sure of how to interact with it.
+Rinoa Super-Genius Hi you have a ~ 600 amp switch on a 14 gauge -15 amp circuit. The appropriate switch ( rated for 15amp) is probably $ 1.59 and a box could run you close to $3.00. Foolproof and safe.
***** no, i dont "assume responsibility" for if others are idiots. my video clearly shows me not getting shocked, so if somebody else gets shocked they arent following my video. plus if a few more idiots kill themselves thats fine with me. oh and my channel name is sarcasm, ever see looney toons? this switch works fine for my application, i enjoy the simplicity of it and feel its made very well. if you have issues with that then just fuck off and dont watch. simple as that.
+Rinoa Super-Genius That's unfortunate. You clearly do not understand what responsibility entails. It's also sad and a little stupid you rely on luck rather than easily acquired skills. The only hope you have is your infantile ignorance doesn't kill anyone. I hope your maturity kicks in before that. Good luck
+Rinoa Super-Genius i just thought of it when i saw some one selling one that holds 200kmah that is the size of a iphone thats bullshit but if you could make one it would be cool
+Rinoa Super-Genius we call it Daisy chaining at the rock climbing gym twist a loop into the cordage and pull the tail end through creating another loop repeat
It can melt NiChrome = >2550F (one time, and now you have 2 shorter coils) so yes as long as its insulated electrically from the Al. and you/your tools both thermally +electrically and not overheated. That thing in your picture is simpler and safer
Would it make sense? If you try to heat up the furnace far enough to melt metal it would break the coils wouldnt it? (depending on what material they're made of...)
JPRTonundFilmstudio I was stating in general, since she had said she tried similar experiments before. Also metals like Aluminium which is the home forging material of choice has a fairly low melting point.
yes i want to get back into blacksmithing. i used to be a part of a blacksmithing club in illinois. i want to build a hydraulic press so i dont have to use a power hammer. im not a fan of power hammers. as for casting metal, i have a lot better filament to use for that. or i may pick up the arc furnace project again.
Rinoa Super-Genius Power hammer eh? Why not use good old fashioned regular hammers :P. But in all seriousness, I know a couple of people who re-purposed arbor presses for use in blacksmithing, though that's more for initial shaping, the finishing portion being hand annealed. When I used to do my little hobbyist blacksmithing, I just used an open air charcoal forge with a leaf-blower for airflow. Just threw the stuff i was working into the coals for a while. Granted I mostly used scrap iron and steel since it was literally everywhere. Mostly made hammers, ax heads, brush hooks, and the odd really crappy sword. Because everyone wants to make a sword at some point.
not as hot as id want, but my goal wasnt to test max temp quite yet. i was just testing the filament itself. when i build a housing out of fire brick, and stick a thermocouple in there i can get a better measurement and a much higher temp most likely.
+Rinoa Super-Genius i thought of something like this awhile back for melting lead and aluminum for my projects but never got to build it. If you can get this to melt aluminum, im surely going to put one together myself.. Great vids btw
Joshua Infante it shouldnt be too hard. ive made a good number of electric arc furnaces but never really spent money to make a nice one. i hope to try someday.
yeah, definitly. this was just a test of the concept though. now i know i can pop that coil unit into a better chamber and it should do fine, just see if it pops at higher temp :D
HI I think it is a good idea, with a time schedule for when there are a new videos,,, Mine is Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 14.00 my time :-) and Sunday also 14.00 if I have something extra,, usually something that falls outside of what i normally do. If you have a deadline,, it a lot easier to get it done :-) I have a video tomorrow Sunday, that was uploaded Wednesday,, this way I can be in front of the videos. But I need to edit Mondays video tomorrow night, but it is ready on my computer back home,, and not to long :-)
I don't make videos. I admit I spend my free time watching boys that want to be girls I'm sorry your father was never there for you to tell you to put your shit up when you are finished using it. all I'm saying is finish a project once in awhile.
