DIY SIX SPRING DRESSES make number two is this little number. Butterick 5413. The big news is that this is the half way day on the 365 Sewing Makes Challenge.
Story of this Garment
Day 183 is half way through my 365 Sewing Makes Challenge. It calls for a special dress. This pattern was gifted to me by my husband's cousin Charlene. The moment I saw it, I thought it looked like a fun make. Glad I have it to show you on Day 183. This dress will be forever "the half way dress" for me.
Pattern and Fabric
The pattern is Butterick 5413, a 1998 release. It features a dress, maxi, tunic, pants and skirt. The pattern envelope describes the dress as (I love pattern envelope descriptions, wish they all had them): Close-fitting, A-line pullover dress (yay pullover), above mid-knee or above ankle or tunic has back neck slit, button/loop, shoulder pads (nope), contrast upper/middle sections and above elbow sleeves. Semi-fitted straight skirt, above mid-knee or straight-legged pants have elastic waist. All have stitched hem. The fabric is all crepe fabric from Fabricland. The black crepe was quite light compared to the teal printed crepe so I doubled it up.
Construction
This was such a fun make. The cutting out of it was probably the biggest job. Very important that I didn't flip any pattern pieces. How do I know? I flipped a few pattern pieces and had to cut them out again. It truly was like a giant jigsaw puzzle. I think I managed pretty well. It doesn't match perfectly at the back, but pretty close.
Fitting and size
The pattern comes in 18-22. I knew this was too big for me, so in addition to the jigsaw puzzle of cutting it out, I shortened the pieces a bit so the dress would fit.
Final Word and Advice
The biggest mistake I made was that I didn't treat the extra layer of black crepe as lining. I just sewed with the crepe doubled. I think that made the seams a bit bunchy and the skirt not drape as well. I should have sewn them separate and hemmed them separate.
Grateful Thread
To cultivate my attitude of gratitude, I end each post with a bit of gratitude. Today, in addition to making it to half way through this crazy challenge, I am also excited because it smells like spring today on the farm. I won't go into detail about what spring smells like here, but I will let you imagine. But it does make it clear we are making progress in the weather department.
