It's been a minute since I've done any woodworking, so I thought I'd take a crack at making a DIY version of the Keen Ramps Slap Stick. You could do this whole thing with a jigsaw and a drill. Simple build, super fun to skate, I'm happy! If you want to see more of this kind of thing, leave a comment below!
Materials:
1 2'x2' project panel 3/4" plywood for the sides
1 4x8 sheet of 1/4" plywood for the riding surface
4 2x4s for the supports
1 2x2 for the coping
2.25" screws for joining the sides and 2x4s
1.25" screws for attaching the riding surface
2" steel pipe
J bolts for attaching the coping to the 2x2
All totaled I spent about $140

I found the specs (from the Keen video) 6" high from top of coping to bottom. 24" wide. Transition is 4' radius. I'm working on a template now.

6 ft would be the best length imo. 4 ft is too short to lock some grinds. 8ft is hard to transport.

If I were to make it again I'd use 1/2 ply and bevel the bottom where it contacts the ground instead of the 1/4". I'm sure the baltic birch stuff that Keen uses is stronger than what I had access to at Home Depot, I put my wheel through it and went flying last time I skated it lol. The 1/4 held up for about a year of semi-regular skating though, not too bad.

You did a great job. I have been thinking about doing the same, just to be able to get a 6 footer. Hard for me to justify saving only $70 bucks with the price of lumber though.
@thisgoestoeleven
@thisgoestoeleven Год назад
Yeah, I feel that. If it was 6' instead of 4' I'd have probably just bought one. That said, I like woodworking and video production, so I got two fun projects out of it, plus the thing itself.

@thisgoestoeleven
@thisgoestoeleven Год назад
@@mattpriceplucky2646 I've only had a couple sessions on it, but so far it's holding up really well. One of the corners is chipping a little, but that may have more to do with uneven ground than the thing itself. The structure itself is really solid, so worst case scenario I replace the 1/4" plywood at some point down the road.

You should have framed it with blocks shaped like the profile every eight inches. That would save material and be more rigid. It is how the Keen ones are made.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fbJ5v2BNAsM.html&ab_channel=KEENRAMPS I built mine the same way Keen Ramps make theirs, with plywood templates on either end connected by horizontal 2x4s. Feels pretty rigid and solid so far, but we'll see how it holds up over time!

Thanks! It's 6" tall in total including the coping. I don't have detailed plans, but I posted a rough cut list that I used to get everything broken down at Home Depot on the r/OldSkaters subreddit, if you search for it there it's in the comments. Hope this helps!

How did you come up with the radius and height of it? I built a mini ramp a few months ago and used galvanized pipe as a temporary coping until I got my actual sch 40 steel. So I've got 2-8' pieces of pipe and have most of the material left over to build a slap stick.
@thisgoestoeleven
@thisgoestoeleven Год назад
for the height I copied the dimensions for the Keen Ramps original version, so it's around 6.5" from the ground to the top of the coping, I believe. For the transition, I just kind of eyeballed a curve and sanded it until I liked the look of it. It's a little whippier than I originally planned, but it's fun.

That is sick man! I watched Cory's video where he built one and made some screen shots so I could try to make my own. My question is, where did you find coping? I can't find anything useful at the local home depot and a 4 foot piece 2" schedule 40 pipe online is like $80 plus shipping. I'm starting to see why they charge $200 for the 4' slap stick.
@thisgoestoeleven
@thisgoestoeleven Год назад
I got my pipe from a local hardware store that cuts pipe to length, and I live in the middle of nowhere. i posted on a local "community forum" FB group and a bunch of folks suggested local places, so I'd start there.

I can’t find any 2 inch steel pipe at Home Depot or Lowe’s, would galvanized fence posts be too flimsy?
@thisgoestoeleven
@thisgoestoeleven 7 месяцев назад
I'd check around for a plumbing supply store near you, that's where I found mine. I've seen folks make them out of pvc and other materials though, so the galvanized post might work? Only one way to find out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2x4s for the supports, 3/4" for the transitions (you can get 2'x2' project panels), a sheet of 1/4" for the riding surface, and 2" schedule 40 steel pipe. cost for the materials is gonna vary based on how big you build it, plus screws, drill bits, countersink, etc, hope this helps!

I drilled holes in the coping and then slightly oversized holes in a 2x2 and attached them with bolts and washers. There are some really good detailed videos on that elsewhere on youtube, I just watched a bunch of those til I had the general idea and did that.

I just sketched out a curve I liked the look of and used a sander to get the shape I wanted, so I'm not sure what the radius is. Keen Ramps did a video on their channel where they go through all the specs, and you can zoom in on the template he sketches out. That's what I did.

I'd like to find someone to build this for me...wood shop is not my best subject to say the least. Anyone know the best way, I guess hiring a contractor that is knowledgeable of building similar things? Hard to find one on the East Coast and spending all that money for Keen Ramps to ship it to me is kinda out of the question....Wish I was better with wood shop!

@@charlesging4630 That's a good way to do it if you've got a tap to thread the hole in the pipe. If you don't have a tap and die set though, you can drill the holes in the same places and use J bolts, which I had a hard time finding but ended up getting them at Tractor Supply.
