I wanted a big skew chisel for woodturning. Those tools can be pretty expensive, so I decided to make one out of an old file and a piece of walnut.
Tools and materials I propose:
Grinder / belt sander: amzn.to/2PAV57u
Angle grinder: amzn.to/2E6uLAx
Chisel set: amzn.to/2pILO1B
Lathe: amzn.to/2yq4bMI
Wood turning tools set: amzn.to/2pH5K59
Rotary tool: amzn.to/2IKdUSS
Bandsaw: amzn.to/2pHj49v
5 minute epoxy: amzn.to/2IHPI3q

an untempered file has a fair chance of breaking and flying. I've snapped file tangs off and broken files just being rough with them. Maybe I missed it, but the file needs to be tempered back a little bit - especially at the tang.

Well done, you have constructed a grenade chisel Files are made of carbon steel, heat treated for hardness, they are very brittle. Lathe tools are made from high speed steel, quite hard but with flex built in. Don't copy what the person in this video did, unless you're not bothered about having such things as eyes, teeth or fingers.

Very nice, I am currently working on my first wood lathe chisel (don't own any), handle is birch firewood formed with hatchet, draw knife, spokeshave. Aluminum tubing collar. Then the file I'm just grinding the teeth smooth without totally removing them, then forming the skew blade. No tang reshaping. Hand crank grinder so the kids can still hang out nearby. We'll see how it works!

I am impressed by the effort and the industry but. I am concerned that files are typically very hard steel and likely to be easily fractured. Skews are prone to catches and with a brittle tool that could be dangerous.
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 4 года назад
You are right you shouldn’t do something like that unless you feel confident About it. I still use this tool and it is one of my favorites
@daw162
@daw162 3 года назад
@@ScrapwoodCity It's not a matter of confidence, it needs to be tempered at the tang and set either soft or spring temper or something like that. Some files have a fairly coarse grain that can be seen when they snap. Coarse grain., less tough. The reason for that is the files wear better if they still retain some large carbides (vs. something like a razor or chisel where you want small evenly dispersed carbides).

I am not a pro either. Tools is stuff that you kind of accumulate overtime, little by little. An angle grinder will help you do some work faster and it is not that expensive. Then use the sandpaper, otherwise it will take forever! Έγώ ευχαριστώ

I have the word out among local second hand stores. if you find any old, big, rusty files, I'll take them. I don't care about the rust. I'm just going to grind them down into wood turning chisels and such. Those really old files have far better steel than the modern Chinese made stuff. Once you get the rust off, it finishes like velvet and hardens like rock.

Usual recomendation is not to use old files like this unless you know how to correctly heat treat them. The production process for files usually makes them hard and brittle and creating the teeth often puts small stress fractures in them. Without the correct heat treatments to relieve those stresses these tools made from old files have been known to snap or shatter

Very nice work Dimitris! It turned really great. I have only one doubt about this, Does the metal lost its temper during the shaping process? Thanks and regards!
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 8 лет назад
Thanks. That's a good question. With the angle grinder that might be an issue. But i think this was only on the surface. When I moved to the belt sander I dipped the blade in water to cool it down and I did not get a burn. Overall it seems that it kept the hardness because the file and sandpaper cannot remove material easily. In any case a proper hardening and tempering process is the right way to go. So far it holds the cutting edge just fine and it sure is way better in relation to my cheap Chinese skew chisel! So I am really happy with the way it came out!
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 лет назад
I find your explanation very clarifying. Thank you very much for answering Dimitris!
@YTcustomchris
@YTcustomchris 8 лет назад
You may want to be extra careful with it. A file is really hard and if you get a catch with is it may snap. Do to it being so high on the rockwell scale. It should hold a edge for a long time but may not be the safest tool steal to use. Just a heads up. Leaf spring make good metal for woodturning tools. Great Job on the tool making. You could put it in the oven for a hour or two to bring down the hardness.

Looks great man! it must have been a pain to remove all the bumps in the file :P nice product! Just a thing, I think oil is not so good for sandind metal since you want the sandpaper to grab the material instead of sliding over it right?. That's why water is commonly used. It keeps the thing cool and contains the dust, as I've seen. but anyway how did it work for you? the result is great so whatever works! :)
@ScrapwoodCity

Dangerous video, don't do it. Files are case hardened this process can lead to flaws and stress in the metal, not a problem with a file but leading to it fracturing when under leverage as a turning tool.
@daw162
@daw162 3 года назад
I'm not sure why files are always described as being case hardened. Decent files are hardened tool steel through and through and not just case hardened cheap steel. Most foreign files now are fully hardened. BUT, they're still dangerous - case hardened would probably be less dangerous because the steel would be mild under the surface. Files are tempered very hard and are brittle because of it, tool steel or not. I've broken the tangs off of files with relative ease. The entire file, tang and all should be tempered back to relieve some of the brittleness.
@colinparkinson5854

absolutest stupid, files are inherently brittle, one day they'll shatter and cause harm,
