Thanks Man ! I've been inflating my different pads with a garbage bag and a rubber band for the past 5 years. It all started when I forgot my pump and since then, I'm carrying the smallest pump ever : a garbage bag. Your tip will make that even better (the rubber band technique can be a pain sometimes). Keep those tips it coming !!

will this inflate a stand up paddleboard or inflatable kayak?
@IntenseAngler
@IntenseAngler Год назад
You can get either passably inflated if you use something stronger in place of a garbage bag (such a dry sack). I've done that with my own inflatable kayak. Gotta say for that purpose a pump works better (and faster) though. Thanks for taking the time to watch, as well as for the comments by the way... it's much appreciated.

I'm like really like in finding this, but... as everyone else has said, you're a genius. I actually had all the parts to make one in the house. Here's what I'm going to do... I regularly line my backpack with a trash compactor bag, so I'm going to use that as the pump bag and take another cap (without a hole in it) to make the bag waterproof. Thanks for the project.
@jan4946
@jan4946 7 месяцев назад
Super late to the topic: Consider cutting out a circle of rubber/plastic (e.g. bike inner tube), place it inside the cap with the hole and screw it on - should be water tight now. Easy to replace. In a pinch you could probably even cut out a bit from the trash compactor to get the hole closed again.

Great tip. I used the cap and threaded bottle top end, without the rubber washer, on a Klymit valve. I simply drilled a 3/4" hole, like you did, and used a rat tail rasp to open the hole up slightly and just slip fit it. Worked great. Thanks

For skeptics out there about the durability of a trash bag for this application: I've been using a similar home-made trash bag inflator for @ 10 years now in all kinds of terrain/conditions with no problems or failure. This design shown in the video looks like a great approach. Thanks for the effort and for sharing!

Dude, this is fricken brilliant! The inflation bags you can buy commercially are SO damned expensive AND heavy. This is an amazing diy hack. Thanks so much for sharing! PS - In the video you say to "drill a 5/8" hole." However, you are using a 3/4" bit (clearly marked!), which makes the hole in the cap 1/8" larger in diameter than the inside diameter of the rubber washer. This is perfect as it allows the pad valve to be inserted easily and for the rubber washer to provide the seal. I suspect that the valve on the pad wouldn't even actually fit through the hard plastic lid if it was only drilled with a 5/8" bit!

You could put this on a dry sac and carry a 2nd lid without the hole drilled. Then you sac is still waterproof and serves as a pump.

that's what I did.. til I took an old ac PUMP from my truck which had enuff space to add another pump. Adding a extra point gives you a portable air compressor. Comes in handy when you are on the trail and need to lower tires pressure and then raise it back up.

For the UL crowd . . . I haven't tried yet, but I'm thinking that since I use a plastic pack liner anyway, I'll make the inflator bag out of the liner, and use another bottle cap (not drilled) to swap out when I want the bag to be waterproof as a liner. Then put the drilled cap on when I want to use as an inflator. However, I imagine the bag will wear out quickly from changing the caps every day on a through hike. How can we get around that?

Alternately you can use 7/8 OD - 5/8 ID clear rubber tube that you can find by the roll at home improvement stores and cut a piece to fit inside of the bottle mouth. Then you can use the bottle cap to cover the bottle opening when not in use. You will need to lighly (0.5mm) bevel, with a olfa knife, the ID edge of the rubber tube to fit over the thermarest nipple.

I had to modify the instructions a bit to fit a Klymit Insulated Static V Lite pad with push/pull inflator. I drilled out the hole using a 7/8" spade bit which left virtually no lip for the washer to sit in. I also used a regular hose washer but the hole was again too small so I used the same bit to widen the hole. It didn't work too well so I cut slits in the rubber and used a sharp knife to remove most of it so it was nearly the same size as the hole. It fits over the valve and does seem to work. I'd like to see if I can find a bottle with a larger diameter and get a larger washer to improve it. We'll see how well this holds up to multiple uses. I'm guessing this would work perfectly for the Therm-a-Rest valves but the Klymit is significantly larger. The instructions were easy to follow.

This is downright clever. I never had trouble inflating mats but one day it occurred to me, I was putting bacteria laden, moist air in the mat. So I bought a hand pump that did not need batteries. For any who might not wish to do this by DIY, maybe they could just buy the male and female hose repair pieces at a hardware store. I haven't tried it, but it should work.

Don't forget that manually blowing up any inflatable pad with your mouth is introducing large amounts of moisture into your pad, and will most likely get trapped inside forever. While this is not a huge deal for non insulated 3 season pads. During the winter camping months this could prove deadly as the moisture can destroy the insulation value inside one of those insulated type inflatable air pads. I would never ever blow any lung air into my Exped winter mat that's for sure ! It is for the same reason that one would not want to keep your face while sleeping inside a sleeping bag in the winter, It could kill you.
@dmithsmith5880
@dmithsmith5880 8 лет назад
On average our breath expels approx 1 quart + of water in the form of vapor in 6 hrs. when sleeping. This vapor combined with below freezing temps instantly condenses inside your sleeping bag making your sleeping bag frozen and or wet inside. With a synthetic bag it is not as terrible but still a very bad thing, with a down bag it is one of the worst things you could do. It drastically reduces the loft and Rvalue of your bag, and makes it 2 lbs heavier every night and does not dry out causing a very uncomfortable and dangerous situation. While you may get away with it above say 10deg.f, but In extremely cold weather say -30f your sleeping bags Rvalue and overall performance Is the difference between life and death. Next time you go winter camping pour a quart of water into your bag before you go to sleep. Or just breathe into your bag, same thing.

@feldspar1333 4 года назад
Robert Thomas This is the way I did it for years. However, blow up a balloon, let it sit, then deflate it and see how much moisture there is in it from your breath. That’s just one inflation! People are paying $150 for high-end ultra-light-weight pads, then filling them up with moisture by breathing directly into it.

Great cheap fix. Works great on my Thermorest Neo-Air but does not work on my Big Agnes Q-Core SL. The valve is too large on the Big Agnes. I need to come up with a wider-mouthed bottle to make my own pad inflator for the Big Agnes. EDITED: Solution found for the Big Agnes--simply remove the rubber washer and then re-install the lid. You don't get as tight of a seal but it still works without the washer.
