Really useful info, there is a lot of confusion around this issue. This makes it a lot clearer to understand 🙏🏾
@bexbugoutsurvivor

The confusion comes from arm chair experts, rather that research through university papers on thermal dynamics....lol Thanx for watching.

The cheap “pitted” fold up matts are strangely good. I’ve found them for £5-6 sometimes. I got a few and give them to youngsters doing DoE.

I absolutely agree with you!! I have noticed the foam egg crate mat keeps me warmer in my hammock (without an underquilt) than any of the other heat reflective things I have tried. Thanks for making this video!

I seen one of those hammocks on the metal frame erected in IKEA. Of course me being me had to try it out, thinking it would look nice in my garden. Result was, my back and buttocks hit the horizontal ground bar. Not too comfortable I thought. Problem had only just started. When I tried to get out of the hammock, I was so low down I couldn't get my legs under me to give me the necessary leverage to lift my body onto my feet. I had to call a nearby Security Guard to haul my ass out of the hammock. Ah! The joys of getting old, it was never like this in the brochure. IKEA have since removed the hammock from its display position. I think the Security Guard was demanding danger money for risking his back.

Great video Bex. Just finished watching a video by a very well known American who told people to use the reflective sheet with only a sleeping bag between you and it! Poor information puts lives potentially at risk. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👍

My guess is his location was one of a warm climate, which doesn't translate to other temperate climates around the world. My tip to you is watch youtubers who make videos in cold environments like Russia at -25C and vice versa. My environment is the UK (Cold & wet often)...lol and I openly admit I am a cold sleeper. Thanx for watching...bex

Great (and accurate) description of how heat reflects ... or doesn't! 👍

I sleep in a hammock with 20F down underquilt, got down to teens and I got cold butt syndrome, then realized I had a piece of reflective bubble sunscreen I use as a sit pad, put it under me and it worked.

Synthetic quilts require a two inch air gap below you, while down quilts require the quilt to be pulled up tight to your butt. Some quilt manufacturers are just full of sh#t where it comes to rating their own kit....Good luck buddy

People who sleep rough use cardboard to make a insulating layer to sit or lie on.
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 2 года назад
The cardboard is duel layer with a corrugation in between the 2 layers giving an air gap.

New subscriber…great info for both hammock and ground camping! I do both and appreciate the testing you've done…will try these methods. Fortunately I have a Hennessy Expedition XL hammock which has a double bottom that allows insulation to be inserted and prevents movement. I'll be binge watching some of your other videos. Cheers from Nova Scotia…MikeR.

I'm not a fan of pads but not freezing to death appeals greatly :-) I'm after a Solognac furtiv to use beneath the pod as a waterproofed second skin/layer and had pondered if a space blanket/reflector insert would be worth the effort. Can't wait for part two Marra 👍

So in theory reflectix should work then. Its a reflective bubble wrap that is used as a form of insulation in houses. You can buy rolls of it and just cut it down to size

Interesting video, great easy to understand physics lesson. So any of the silver reflective items will work if you put them under an air mat, as this will give the air gap.?
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 2 года назад
Correct. The air is already present once inflated. without a reflector, the ground sucks heat from your body/pad, this is called (conduction). You need to break the conduction cycle, and reflectors will break this cycle.. Therm-a-rest has an air mat which is constructed from Reflex, and is the warmest pad in the world per gram to temperature value, if you have £200 spare. Here's a link to my Therm-a-rest mat review video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MDLWpytIoo8.html

just wondering... since the reflective layers tend to reflect on both sides. If you put the egg crate mat with the silver layer downwards. The non reflective layer traps more heat and you get reflection without the cold feeling of direct contact. (I don't own such a mat, but thinking about it) Have you ever tried if this works noticeably better or not?

The Egg crate mat is designed to go silver down as to not damage the softer upper close cell foam. The way to increase the R value of the Egg Crate mat would be to double the thickness of the foam. This can be achieved by folding the egg crate mate in half, making if shorter but twice as warm. The lower half can be substituted with your pack under your feet, (this is a method used by long distance lightweight trekkers in the states) I only had the silver upwards in this video of my egg crate mat to demonstrate a point. In my personal experience either way around works, and is up to the individual to find their own personal preference, a point shared by manufactures of egg crate, who write this in their websites, silver down is only to protect the foam from damage.....bex

Hey Bex....I need a litte help. I got a question. I'm got a 1, 81 m length. I own a plce british army issued long back ( !!! ) bergan. Is there the option to wear with my ruck on back a battle-belt / Webbing/ etc...?
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 2 года назад
Yes. To combine webbing and Bergen, the Bergen needs to be carried correctly, watch the video in the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B0b_F-VQEY4.html The Webbing needs to be adjusted to you fit too, with the Webbing platform riding no higher than the top of the iliac crest (hip bone) and tightened at the same position as your trouser belt. TIP the webbing belt needs to be tight, without causing discomfort, adjust the straps so the webbing is at the correct height (No higher than the top of your hip bone) and the pouched sit on your Glutes...bex

Great video. I've heard of people using reflectix inside their shoes as insoles and people swear by it. Your thoughts?
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor Год назад
I did a video on that some years ago. During movement feet can overheat, then sweat. That sweat then will turn to cold, having an adverse affect. However, placed under your existing sole upside down will act as an isolator instead of radiating, preventing the cold entering your boot in the first place. (Just my way, not compulsory) ....b

Excellent channel... 👍 What would you use on Brecon/Black Mountains; bivy or tent (if tent, which one)? Take care
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor Год назад
Defo a bivvy. You maybe searching for too long to find a flat spot to accommodate the whole footprint of a tent. A bivvy will save you hours of time searching for a better spot to pitch. If its any help however I would have chosen the Lanshan 1 pro, it has a pretty small footprint, but not everyone likes the claustrophobic feel of 1 person tents.
