Shear pins for the Kubota snowblower (transmission assembly in another video) are a bit on the expensive side. They are just grade 2 bolts with notches at the correct locations to shear off. So I decided to make my own.
I use grade 2 bolts for times when the snowblower needs extra protection, such as gravel driveways, when a rock may jam the auger or impeller. Grade 5 is used in less risky conditions, such as heavy wet snow but paved/concrete driveways.

I have an older snapper snowblower and it is hard to come by the oem shear pins. They are short and thin with a narrow space between the two shear grooves. I am going to make the pins out of unmarked threaded bolts 1/4" diameter and use your drill technique. I think your shear pins would have snapped quicker if the shear groove was deeper and during the testing you positioned the groove right at the lip of the top of the vice similar to how the pin would get the shear force in the auger. Thanks for giving me the tip.

I have a 50 plus year old champ of a snowblower, that i'm struggling to locate parts for...and I may have to go this route! The proper Drive Axle shear pin for an (AMF dual stage snowblower #1360-0200 (.25" x 2.0")) the drive axle is 1.5" dia. Unless someone has access to a different reference #...any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Some quick searching suggests 13600200 cross references to Murray/Noma/AMF part 19952. Not sure how correct that is, though. Making your own is definitely more economical, but you could always experiment with pins made for newer MTD/Craftsman/etc. to see if one fits. Food for thought.

Most manufacturer shear pins are grade 2 bolts, which is pretty soft for heavy snow/ice/slush. Making your own out of grade 5 will probably last longer.

Are you really going to risk your gear drive because you didnt want to spend a couple of bucks? They cant be that expensive to where you haft to make your own. Maybe in a pinch when you dont have any on hand but not because you dont want to spend a couple of dollars.

Search forums, videos, etc., a lot of people use DIY shear pins with great success. The shear pins in this video are virtually identical to the ones you can purchase from Kubota (www.messicks.com/part/70060-01338/bolt-shear-38-42). When blowing a gravel drive way, it's possible to go through a couple each time it needs to be cleared. At $5 for 16 from the hardware store, or $3 for one, it's a no brainer. Shear pins are truly nothing special, just a lower grade bolt with notches to allow a clean break where needed.
